  1. Você conseguiu encontrar alguma outra boa marca não-gamer além de GenioDesk, Slikdesk, ErgoDesk?

So today I just found out the MTA (transportation authority for NYC, which published open data about trains, metro and bus operations) geoblocks several countries from its developer portal - including Brazil.

Why?

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

@melissawm Portland does that too.

There’s a long-standing bug in Fedora (also in Fedora 40), where the sign-in screen is displayed at the wrong resolution (it doesn’t use the settings you have set in the Settings app).

So, for example, if you have 4K@2x set in your settings for your monitor, the sign-in screen will still display at a tiny 4K@1x.

To fix, download an app called GDM Settings from the Software app and press Display → Apply current display settings → Apply.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

@aral The last time I did some digging about it (4 years ago), it was because your user settings are stored on ~/.config/monitors.xml whereas GDM uses settings on /var/lib/gdm/.config/monitors.xml. Here’s an entry on the Arch Linux wiki about it: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/GDM#Setup_default_monitor_settings

🔗 PDF: https://www.defensoria.pi.def.br/wp-content/uploads/2022/01/CARTILHA-PRIMEIRAS-PROVIDÊNCIAS-APÓS-A-MORTE.pdf

I’m curious, what’s the biggest pain of the organizations you’ve worked at? What was that thing that kept haunting everyone and stalling work. (I’m thinking in terms of governance — compliance, accountability, transparency, etc.)

@juliobiason I think it doesn't bring the Emoji selector everywhere? I seem to recall it only working with GNOME apps. (I had a time in my life as a Linux user I was obsessed with finding a pretty good emoji selector until I settled for Rofi.)

I’m tempted to buy a physical book for the first time in a decade because all scans I could find are low contrast and blurry.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

I couldn’t find a physical copy of this book in my uni’s library either. Both digital copies I found were created by The Internet Archive, by the way, so I basically ran out of options.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy digital copies of that book exist! My spouse needed that book ASAP and that really helped. But I found them to be extremely difficult to read, especially towards the end of every page.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

It looks like the publisher does have an amazing PDF version of this book (per their excerpts)… But they decided not to sell it. Instead, this book is a print on demand title and the only way to buy it is by getting a physical copy.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

I found one online store in Brazil with a physical copy of the latest edition of this book in stock, and it looks like it was the only copy they had!

anna,

There it is!

Writing is such a resource heavy operation for me. Capturing my thoughts, analyzing, understanding, and distilling them until get to a point they make sense to other people. I have to do it all the time at work as a process architect and at school as an Information Systems student, it's no wonder it's so rare to feel like I have the energy to do it for fun.

Addressing indoor air quality saves lives and helps us achieve at work, in school, and in self-governance.

Brain function declines by 15% as CO2 levels hit 945ppm, and by 50% at 1400ppm.

Have you ever measured CO2 at your desk or a contentious City Council meeting? What you find might surprise you!

These scientists recommend mandating clean air in public buildings, with 800ppm as the upper limit. That's good policy: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.adl0677

@josh I’m starting to have those conversations at my university. I was shocked at how terribly ventilated my faculty building is. https://friend.camp/@anna/112140076449667719

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

@josh It was terrifying to see carbon dioxide levels increase so rapidly in real time. It got to a point I was dreading every update.

I was telling my spouse, one of the biggest barriers for us here in Brazil is being able to afford that kind of device — I have the privilege of having disposable income available to import it. It’s quite powerful to have a physical device showing you the reality of things — they’re kind of inescapable. They force you to face the problem and think of a solution.

If you're here because of my CO₂ measurement thread (I'm about to summarize it for clarity), here's some context you may have missed: I'm a Brazilian living in the Central-West region of Brazil—more specifically, in the capital city of Goiás. This is why you'll see my Aranet4 Home measuring temperatures in the high 20s (Celsius).

I'm an Information Systems undergraduate at my state's federal public university. We seldom see HVAC systems here. Cooling is often provided by mini split AC systems.

anna,
@anna@friend.camp avatar

I'm frankly appalled that, four years after the start of the pandemic, no one thought it would be a good idea to improve air ventilation in our classrooms. After all, they forced us to go back to classrooms as soon as they could.
