Does there exist a satellite with a camera pointed at earth that is detailed enough for it to take a selfie of its reflection in water?

apocheir,
@apocheir@wandering.shop avatar

@christianp I suspect that astronomical seeing and distortion in the reflection from water waves would make this impossible.

I don't think astronauts can see the reflection of the moon on the ocean, but the decay of search engines isn't helping me verify that.

@Tusky what do you think about an option to have image descriptions expanded by default

apocheir,
@apocheir@wandering.shop avatar

@Tusky Compare these two screenshots. One has the image description as it shows up by default, one has it expanded to show the entire description.

Particularly for images like this I'd like to have the description expanded by default, but in general I'd rather have it expanded by default and close it than the other way around. Maybe it could depend on the dimensions of the image.

image description expanded

This year will be the 20th anniversary of @leonardr's screen-scraping tool Beautiful Soup.

https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2024/celebrate-beautiful-soups-20th-anniversary/

Please contact me if you'd like to contribute to the celebration by any of:

  • contributing to a "how Beautiful Soup was important to my life or career" anthology
  • helping edit and publish that anthology
  • funding printing the book
  • throwing or speaking at a party on or around May 19th, 2024
  • helping upgrade Leonard's PyCon travel so it's not just economy/coach

New blog post: Some diversity advice I give.

https://www.harihareswara.net/posts/2024/some-diversity-advice-i-give/

Colleagues ask me for advice on diversifying their hiring pipelines, recruiting and retaining volunteer contributors, and addressing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in marketing to and taking care of their users. Here are a few tips I often share. Not comprehensive, aimed mostly at US technology managers and open source maintainers.

Completed a very good full draft of "Dead Town," the first novella in fourth Southern Reach book, Absolution. Most is closer to third draft, due to the way the process went. Chronicles an expedition of biologists to the Forgotten Coast, 20 years before Area X that leads to S&SB.

was talking to some trans folk who are thinking of moving out of the south and I realized that I don't know much about the queer community in most of upstate new york. I know Buffalo has a sizable one, I know some queer folk from Albany, but aside from that I'm oblivious. Anyone have any knowledge or experiences to share?

(I'm not going to define "upstate" too strictly here)
