Whoa, exciting news! Conferences, particularly community-run ones, have had a real tough time of it, lots shutting down because they can't make the economics work any more. This is a great sign for the health and future of the Python community.

@chrisjrn indeed, my hope is that the interest will spill over into regional and more domain-specific conferences and help them out too.

Just got back from a week backpacking and canyoneering in Utah, and I ... I think the sandstone wore off my fingerprints!? At least, TouchID hasn't worked since I got back. Wild.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@waldoj the number of friends of mine who've made this same suggestion makes me think I might have a "type”

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@glyph hey, that worked - thanks for the suggestion!

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@sgillies nailed it in one - Escalante! TOTALLY work it, such an amazing place. Love it out there.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@greg Glen Canyon NRA, near Escalante. The national parks in Utah get most of the visitors — and rightfully so, they’re amazing — but for my money the solitude and true wilderness of the Escalante make it more attractive to me. We were out for a week and only saw one other party, very briefly.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@greg definitely hit me up if you want recs in the area!

It's a small thing, but this is a good change and I'm happy to see it (tldr: 1password renamed your individual vault from "private" to “employee" in the context of business accounts

https://blog.1password.com/employee-vault/

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@adam I also like that it implies that your employer can see stuff in your vault. They can’t exactly, not directly, but could in theory reset your password and take a peek that way, so it's a nice nod in that direction too.

Hi. Quick break from the posting for a serious PSA.

Please have a bottle of aspirin in your home. Make sure the tablets can be chewed as well as just swallowed. Make sure you remove any fiddly foil seal and such. Don't use this aspirin for regular pain relief, just keep it around and know where it is.

Hopefully, you'll never need it and will just feel silly for having it. But if a bad time comes for you someday, being able to chew aspirin when emergency services tells you may save your life.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@danderson yes! A good minor tweak — and what I have at home and in my first aid kits — is baby aspirin. Smaller doses mean more flexibility and they’re made to be chewable so aren’t as gross as munching a grown-up pill

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@danderson yup, that's what I have in my FAKs - 81mg chewable pills.

My primary use case is wilderness medicine, so diagnosing a heart attack in the field is next to impossible and "dial 911" part requires satellites in the best case and is impossible in the worst. So the protocol for suspected heart attack is chew two (160 mg) every four hours while you attempt evac/rescue. That's a small enough dose to have negligible potential side effects while still maybe providing some benefit.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@danderson my WFR is super old so I just double checked and you’re right - NOLS now recommends 320 daily for suspected heart attack.

Is there such thing as a small, rugged GoPro-style device that’s more oriented towards still photos? I love the size and form factor and ruggedness of the GoPro/insta360/etc, but don’t really want to shoot (or edit) much if any video.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@chrisjrn mostly (a) it's expensive, I assume part of that is because of all the (impressive but useless to me) work they put into video quality and (b) yeah the focal length/FOV isn't great for most stills

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@joshourisman I want something I can rappel down waterfalls with :) So I think IP67 as a minimum, which I think rules out any of the normal swappable lens systems unfortunately.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@ak it's weird that these cameras basically haven't improved since the early 2000s. They're still roughly the same size, image quality, weight, etc.

People are going to absolutely lose their minds when Siri jumps from bad to really really good. And there's no tech barrier standing in their way from doing it today. Just a lot of work and cost, so it'll be done.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@ericflo it will require Apple to recognize that Siri sucks and Apple has traditionally been really bad at admitting to themselves when a product sucks. They certainly CAN get there but it’s unclear to me that they WILL.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@ericflo I think I hope they will — of all the current players I think I’d probably trust an AI assistant thingie from Apple more than anyone else’s (maybe?) so I guess I’m rooting for them a little bit.

This paper is trash. We do this every few years.

The conclusion is correct (graduate degree holding white men believe the most 'taboo' conspiracy theories), but the reasons it suggests why, are sociology-babble garbage. The real reason is:

  • Racism is a lie. To believe in racism, you must believe a set of easily debunkable lies.
  • Richer, whiter, maler, more educated populations are not less racist, despite attempts to twist stats to say this. They're more racist.

@mekkaokereke thank you so much for this. I’m so tired of the “both sides believe weird conspiracies” nonsense.

@raiderrobert I actually think these are all GREAT things for developers to write! Not to put into production, but as an exercise to gain a deeper understanding of why these are hard problems and what abstractions are actually doing for you under the hood. As a friend once said, “reinventing the wheel is a great way to learn more about wheels”

Holy shit, 1Password is coming for Okta. Good luck y’all, competition is sorely needed in this space and I’d love to see y’all kick thier butts. https://1password.com/xam/extended-access-management

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@zrail it’ll almost certainly be extra — one of the reasons that Okta has such a moat is that maintaining a zillion OIDC/SAML integrations is a MASSIVE pain in the ass.

Inspired by @stiftnuersel I decided to finally try to add book binding to my skill set and started with binding both books of 2D6 Dungeon (also a tip by @stiftnuersel).

Especially sewing the paper stacks was incredibly relaxing. I put an audio book on (going through The Stormlight Archive again) and just went for it.

Decided to go with a soft cover. The cardboard came from some deliveries and the fabric from the left overs of an old sewing project.

Quite happy with the result 😊

Template used for creating the sewing holes.
Finished book covered with a black structured fabric.
Leafing through the book.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@foosel these look lovely! Can you point me towards what open source tools you're using with the Silhouette? I've been thinking about getting a vinyl cutter but the shitty cloud software has been making me less interested.

jacob,
@jacob@jacobian.org avatar

@foosel oh lovely. I’m already using Inkscape to drive my embroidery machine (https://inkstitch.org) so this should fit right in. Sweet!
