The basis for open data, open science, including for commercial exploitation, is that industry pays taxes and these same taxes fund some science.

When industry chooses to not pay taxes, the deal is broken.

We don’t see commercially funded research in the public domain. The license to use open data should preclude tax avoidance or minimisation schemers.

apparently the red dots and red arrows are tankers transferring Russian oil to other tankers which then is no longer embargoed and can be 'safely' be sold .... All in international waters so no-one can do anything about it.

“Croatia will welcome Europe’s first Centre for Sustainable Tourism”

ROFL 🤣

Your tourism is only sustainable if people can get to places without flying or driving. Given Croatia’s generally awful rail network and poor rail links to many of its neighbours they’ve got a lot of work to do https://www.euronews.com/travel/2024/05/05/could-croatia-be-the-most-sustainable-travel-destination-in-europe-its-tourism-minister-ho

@apolitosb@astrodon.social avatar

@jon Just to understand your point… do you mean islands are out?

It’s one thing to encourage rail. It’s another to claim that it’s the only acceptable to travel.

It has been a tricky few weeks 😬

Shite weather for cycling 🙄🚴‍♂️

Struggling with a sense of loss of identity after retiring from ESA 🛰️🙃

Our daughter breaking her kneecap in Edinburgh, problems with the post-surgery recovery, & my wife having to fly there yesterday for the third time to look after her 🤕

Trying to get ready to move house & country next month 🇳🇱🇩🇪

And Liverpool FC. Oh, Liverpool ⚽️😭

try being a long term arsenal supporter 😃

Good luck Mark.

Today Gaspar left us, with just a bit over 12 years of age.

We don’t really know what illness took him, but the vets could not help us or him…

In any case, thanks Gaspar for all your unconditional love and company. You will be missed…

Trying to not fly. Was going to take the train from Munich to Leiden tomorrow. This morning I get a message that tomorrow there’s going to be a strike. Changing to today is an absolute nightmare on the Bahn website and don’t get me started on the unmitigated disaster that is the app.

apolitosb,
@apolitosb@astrodon.social avatar

@knud from Heidelberg it makes little sense to fly. From Munich it’s the difference between doing it in a day or 3 days. Assuming you work some of the time on the train (current neighbours not making it easy) it’s bearable. It’s not effective nor efficient. Still here I am on the way to Arnhem …

@knud planning to reduce some 38 year old data on the train today.

    @jaztrophysicist if it is not written and reviewed it didn’t happen. Not really sure that any of the options on the poll correctly reflect the scientific process.

    @jaztrophysicist indeed there is plenty that does not make it out but those ideas and results will expire with time. Even the published ones have a limited shelf life. The unpublished will be rediscovered sometime later.

    Aaaand … done 🥵

    My 44th & final presentation of recent results from ESA’s missions to the Science Programme Committee in our Paris HQ today 🚀🛰️✨

    Why final? Because after 15 years, I’ll be retiring from ESA in just a few weeks from now 😱

    It has been a privilege to be involved in so many history-making spaceflight moments over that time, with Rosetta & JWST perhaps primus inter pares, & I will miss my amazing colleagues 🙇‍♂️

    Future plans? Many, but more on all that soon 😉

    A screenshot of the Keynote slide deck from my final science highlights presentation to ESA’s SPC, featuring results & events from EnVision, LISA, Einstein Probe, XRISM, INTEGRAL, XMM-Newton, Solar Orbiter, SOHO, Cluster, Mars Express, Euclid, Gaia, HST, CHEOPS, JWST, & (kind of) Rosetta.

    this is not cognitively impaired. This is unhinged.

    << “Nobody can ramble like this,” he said, adding: “They’ll say: ‘He rambled, he’s cognitively impaired.’ Well, it’s really the opposite. It’s total genius – you know that.” The crowd cheered some more. >>
