without using Amazon, has anyone a way of buying a book online to be delivered to a US address using a European credit card?

Niche toot perhaps, but why oh why are there no good artist impressions of a low-mass x-ray binary system available?

They’re either ridiculously low-resolution, look like they’ve been drawn with an Etch-a-Sketch, or have zero regard for physics. Often all three.

Am I really going to have to ask AI to make me one?!

(Not helped by trying to search the web while on a train moving at 300kmh, admittedly.)

So tell me, my Dutch friends: is it National Bloody Leafblower Day here today?

I mean, the neighbourhood is absolutely full of them this morning in all directions and mostly ridiculously noisy petrol-fuelled ones as well.

Silence yesterday and the trees are all holding on to their still green leaves with great skill.

So WTF is going on?! 🤬

If anyone can explain to me how it can make any sense that we are wearing pullovers because the airconditioning is set to some ridiculously low temperature.

At Houston airport announcements over the tannoy include an advisory against attempting to carry a firearm through security.

Even after more that 45 years of traveling to the US I am still astounded by the cultural divide between the US and Europe on the issue of personal firearms.

What percentage of the Hydrogen in our bodies has been in a star?

Are we actually recycled star material or mostly (by number) Big Bang stuff?

For the second panel of the morning, we are talking about data policies.

In particular. This includes the CERN data policy

https://openscience.cern/policies

The ESA Climate initiative policy:

NASA scientific information policy

https://science.nasa.gov/researchers/science-data/science-information-policy

NASA Public Access Plan

open access should mean that all articles in the citations to a paper should also be open access. That would be transformational. One can start with each publisher undertaking this for citations to articles from their publishing house.

apolitosb,
@apolitosb@astrodon.social avatar

@crawfordsm the ESA document linked is not released. This is in effect a 2013 draft. Is that simply a reflection of what is available as a hyperlink or have they never released it ?

It has been a very difficult week.

Our cat Tigger has been missing since last Sunday.

He was wandering unsupervised in the back garden in his jacket & leash as he often does, but got tangled, wriggled free, & was off before we spotted him.

He usually comes back within an hour when this happens, although once in 2018, he was gone for 4 days.

It has been 7 days this time already.

We’re worried sick.

Physicist Julius Robert Oppenheimer was born in 1904.

He is best known for directing scientific work at Los Alamos during the Manhattan Project, but also made important contributions to quantum mechanics, astrophysics, and relativity that are not as well known!

@mcnees it’s a beautiful paper. Anderson seemingly annoyed at positron Bein imposed by the editor proposes the “negatron” for the electron. It makes a lot of sense.
