okay, so what happens is you update your profile. woem.men tells every other server: "hey! ashten updated her profile!"

every server, simultaneously, tries to download the new profile. the profile includes the following:

  1. profile picture
  2. display name
  3. bio
  4. pinned posts

pinned posts is whats killing it.

when a server requests your pinned posts, sharkey has to figure out which posts to send and in which order. to do this, it has to go through every single post you've made to figure out how to order them. and it has to do that once for every pinned post you have. and it has to do that for every request.

so, for me that would be:
19,000 notes x 18 pinned posts x 500 servers = 171 MILLION database lookups

so, when there are hundreds of servers hitting woem.men because i added a period to my bio, it crashes cuz it literally requested it's own DDOS

that also explains why my profile seems to fail to federate sometimes

why gpu passthrough isnt worth it: (8 minute long video)

  1. anti-cheat will catch you
  2. you need two GPUs
  3. performance decrease of about 10-20%

okay, i used GPU passthrough for about 3-4 years

  1. there are ways to hide youre in a VM. and the vast majority of non-competitive games dont care anyways

  2. no you dont. theres a script you can run that'll unbind the tty from the GPU and reset it before you boot your VM. yah, you wont be getting your linux display back until you full restart your system, but on a server with SSH thats fine anyways

  3. the only valid point on this 8 minute video. i switched to bare metal cuz i was losing about 70% performance with my new GPU for some reason and i couldn't figure out why. perhaps if i kept at it, i could've solved it, but... i wanted to play video games at that point
