Now this stopped me scrolling. Really cool, captivating image. I love a photo with a lot of things going on that retains a sense of rhythm.

Good camera the X300, I killed one a few years ago and felt pretty bad about it. The electronics don’t hold up well in damp environments.

auzas_1337,

axioms have entered the chat

The deeper you go in the why territory, the more abstract and tangental your axioms get.

So yeah. All facts and truths ultimately rest on foundations that are either kinda unobservable or unproven. Doesn’t make them less practical or true (by practical definitions) though.

There are good people everywhere.

Doesn’t really change the fact that Russia, more or less in its current form, has been bullying its neighbours for half a millenia. Longer, if you count the Grand Duchy of Moscow as Russia.

auzas_1337,

Planting my own veggies for the first time and cleaning the overgrown space in my backyard that was once a garden.

I also got my grandma to send me blackcurrant cuttings across half of Europe and they took to the soil here surprisingly well. I essentially just dug a hole, put higher quality soil into it and stuck the branches into the soil. The rain and the sun did the rest of the work and within a week I’m seeing small leaves.

The plan for this month is to dig up the land in the backyard, prepare plots for the veggies and create a fence from the branches that come from the laurel trees that we cleared about a month ago.

I’m also letting the lawn do its own thing in the part of the property that’s facing the street. It’s spectecular. Short vid here.

Well ACTSHUALLY, depending on your definition of the middle ages, you wouldn’t be very likely to be killed for being a witch, since the witch hunt came into being after the Reneissance.

That said, I would also take the spices. The amount of spices in that picture would probably set me up for life. Buy a nice place somewhere in Northern Italy and live out my days learning to play the moog, amusing my medieval friends.

auzas_1337,

This is really interesting and a good way to think about a bunch of things. I’ll try it out. I do pay some attention to processes, but not to granular detail.

This is a very rationalistic worldview though. Surely you don’t look at everything as a process?

auzas_1337,

I know this yet I still do it. I guess this should be preceeded by “gauge your entry speed”.

auzas_1337,

Someone more educated, please explain to me, why it’s impossible to just take the existing industry, take all the know how and engineering and direct efforts into electrifying (converting) existing cars instead of building new ones.

If the world was perfect and there was no nuance, no bad actors, no human factor involved - would it be a viable solution to cut back on the emissions without getting rid of the comfort that a car affords?

auzas_1337,

I am “the other market” haha. But even in Europe it’s mostly Tesla’s that you see. At least in the parts that I’ve lived in.

The American truck culture is weird to me.

auzas_1337,

For example cameras have been weatherproof for decades now. And you can both change the batteries and plug a bunch of stuff in them no problem.

auzas_1337,

Might be a silly question, but aren’t SSD’s supposedly worse than HDD’s for storing data long term? Or is that just a myth?

I’ve read that if you only store data and then read it off the disk without overwriting then it’s comparable to HDD data degradation wise. Not sure how true is that.

auzas_1337,

Was about to comment that “divstobrene” is a thing in Latvia.

As always, ahead of the curve where it truly matters.

Where do I start with learning about the soil in my backyard?

Long story short - I moved from a country where there’s an abundance of black soil to a country with a dry climate and not much black soil. Not only that, I moved from an apartment to a house with plenty of land. I believe strongly that growing my own produce is the way to go, but sadly I lack a lot of skill....

auzas_1337,

No worries about the compost, haha. I haven’t started making it here, but I’ve lived with compost piles my whole life (that I haven’t spent in an apartment). That’s one of the rare things that I know about. Just chug a leftover veggie/fruit in a pile and let it steam. Got that. 🫡

I’m afraid I might need to buy some if it turns out that the one in the backyard isn’t good enough. The specifics of the location don’t really allow for permanent planning.

auzas_1337,

Thank you for the tips! Luckily I’ve got too many jars laying around so that won’t be a problem.

As for neighbours, there’s a bit of a language barrier, but I’ve got my gf’s grandma who’s growing a bunch of stuff near here so I’m definitely planting natives, but I also want to plant a couple of blackcurrant bushes which might prove to be a little tricky since there’s little rainfall.

auzas_1337, (edited )

I’ll check the bokashi system. I was wondering about mixing soil too. Good to know that that’s a legit practice.

A part of my garden seems well suited for planting, lots of grass, it’s overgrown and hasn’t been used in many years. I’m particularly interested in getting blackcurrant bushes to grow here and I know they like dampness which is a bit of a problem where I live (European part of the Mediterranean). I’m a huge fan of berries, but barely any grow here that I’m aware of. For the rest of the garden I’m definitely aiming for natives.

auzas_1337,

Will do, thank you!

auzas_1337,

I’ve always wanted to try raised beds and I was planning to use those in the garden in front of the house. There the soil is screwed completely and barely anything grows. For the back I would prefer just stickin’ everything in the ground, but I’ll see. It will be a year for experiments.

Thank you for the link!

auzas_1337,

Hm, wouldn’t it make more sense to mix the regular garden soil with the soil in the raised beds? My thinking is - if plants take the nutrients from the soil and a raised bed is essentially a closed system then dumping that soil into the garden would create less fertile patches.

But this is from one person who doesn’t know much about gardening to another 😅

auzas_1337,

Not really.

I’ve owned a bunch of digital cameras (never a full frame one) and I now have a Canon 30D which is ancient by DSLR standards. With the Lightroom de-noise AI the RAW files I shoot with that camera might as well come from something made in the last 10 years. I might be exaggerating, but besides the megapixel count, for whatever I use my cameras for, the pictures come out great out of that one.

For me, shooting film is about the random glitches analog media produces. It’s about the sound. It’s about handling an old, mechanical camera. It’s about the achievement of catching a nice moment without any aids. That can’t be reproduced, just by the virtue of the fact that it’s literally just not the same.

On the purely technical side, digital and film is just two different mediums and there are some things you can’t reproduce. Like painting on a canvas or a wall and on a tablet. But for most use cases where you don’t intentionally require an analog image, I would say that digital does just as good of a job and is way more flexible.

My 2 cents.

auzas_1337,

I like the dinner table analogy, I’ll remember it next time this topic comes up because I think it connects to a wider audience than photographers and audiophiles.

auzas_1337,

Reminds me of when I found random totem collection on a beach. Those weren’t carved, just painted though. Cool picture.

auzas_1337,

Have you had experience with Nikwax and a Rains jacket? I own one, I love it to bits, but I have also abused it to the point where I can’t wear it in public anymore because of the worn out and ripped bits.
