🔗 New Piccalilli link: I Need Your Help to Make 11ty Fully Independent and Sustainable in 2024

Zach writes how he is trying to work 100% full time on 11ty. To do that, the project needs financial support, so let’s make that happen.

Can anyone hook me up with a front-end.social invite for Piccalilli?

🔗 New Piccalilli link: Look Mum, No Breakpoints!

Rob McCormick breaks down how they refactored their front-end with fluid type, flexible layouts and importantly, giving the browser more control.

Assuming the premise that us CSS developers aren't reaching for container queries as much as well all thought we would is true...

Why do you think that is?

belldotbz,
@belldotbz@mastodon.social avatar

@chriscoyier in between needing them and them arriving, I got into less queries and more letting flexbox do its thing.

They're still useful for tweaks, just like media queries too

📝 New on Piccalilli: How a handful of independent publishers are doing their thing

I really like paying good writers so I thought I’d recommend a handful of publications I’m paying for and look at how they do things.

📝 New on Piccalilli: I’m worried about the tabbing behaviour, rather than the syntax and name of CSS masonry

There’s a lot of chatter about CSS masonry at the moment. Should it be called “masonry” and should it be grid? Let’s worry about the basics first.

I need more respondents on this form if you could? https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSc97QgOnDCeU_SyIO2odV0PE7A0wiWCdb32uGd2pGy16JVoKw/viewform

The question is should we change the name of https://piccalil.li?

It's currently split right down the middle…

Thanks pals!

@sarajw we're already doing that as we speak and frankly, none of the ideas are sitting well with me at the moment

Being able to pay LinkedIn to allow you to spam people's direct messages should be illegal.

My DMs are an absolute shambles and riddled with grifters like a dog with fleas.

I swear these posts from @belldotbz have become a delight to wake up to in my RSS reader. Great stuff in here on inheritance, maybe the best explainer I’ve seen, but good notes on progressive enhancement and too! https://piccalil.li/blog/css-inheritance/

📝 New on Piccalilli: CSS inheritance

Inheritance truly is a superpower and it’s what makes developing on the web a joy if you embrace it. In this quick post, I’m going to convert you into a super fan.

@xypnox that's a wild design choice by them tbh

@belldotbz@mastodon.social avatar

@aardrian @xypnox first, I can't believe I used the prefixed version of the selector. What a dingbat. I'll get that edited now.

In terms of colour treatment then, Adrian. You must have published something in the past I can link to as an aside in the article?

If for some reason you’re confused who the bad guys are.

The Tory’s grand stand policy is flying — probably only hundreds of asylum seekers to Rwanda to “stop the boats”.

Labour’s grand stand policy is to nationalise rail to actually invest in the country’s key infrastructure.

Often feared by developers, the cascade and specificity is actually really simple if you utilise the right mental model when authoring CSS.
