Hello Amos! thank you for all your work and the open source code!
I see from your screenshot that you are using some very pleasant to my eyes font that I would like to use if possible.
Would you care to share where can I find it?

WhatsApp just released a feature to have multiple accounts on the same phone if it supports dual-sim

https://blog.whatsapp.com/multiple-accounts-coming-to-whatsapp

Telegram had multiple account for 6 years already:

https://telegram.org/blog/themes-accounts

They both have extensive feature sets. But unfortunately my messenger of choice, @signalapp , is still not fully OpenSource (server), doesn't provide similar features, and the most annoying thing: have a stale bot on their Github to push issues under the rug:

https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Android/issues?q=is%3Aissue+stale+inactivity+is%3Aopen

@Mehrad
Well you can always use and connect all your accounts in one.

@Mehrad
Well about the time maintenance there is
https://www.beeper.com/

Regarding the sec risk, I get it but in case you need full encryption is better to use pgp and email? Plus, in case you run your own server then you could onboard everybody you care to it. Getting people out of closed source apps is always a win.

@Mehrad
I am not sure why it is a crappy UI.
I am mainly using the web on desktop and the android app works for me.
@delta is something new (based on email if I'm correct) and I haven't tried it yet but seems promising.
Regarding the UX probably they just need a bit of time to get at the level.

@Mehrad
I am not sure what your friends expect from a messaging app.
I for example expect 2 things:
Instant messages and possible calls.
Element has both.
Then regarding security I expect E2E encryption, which it has it.
Regarding disappearing messages, I understand that some threat models need that but if you need such thing then using a smartphone is a no go.

Discover a world of learning with JSTOR!! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“š

I would like to share a website I found the other day, a digital house of knowledge known as JSTOR!

Imagine having millions of academic articles, books, and crucial primary sources right at your fingertips. Whether you're diving deep into historical documents or exploring contemporary studies, JSTOR's extensive library is rich with opportunities for discovery and enlightenment.

I believe the beauty of learning lies in its accessibility. That's why, with JSTOR, numerous resources come at no cost. Ensuring that the pursuit of knowledge is an inclusive quest. ๐ŸŒŸ
JSTOR Daily offers thought-provoking stories and insights into diverse subjects that resonate with our daily lives, bridging the gap between scholarly research and daily curiosity.Education is about empowering. JSTOR does just that by offering free courses like Research Basics to hone your academic research skills.

Well I didn't know that, and thank you very much for pointing it out!
I will take down the posts.

bioinformatician_next_door,
@bioinformatician_next_door@kafeneio.social avatar

@Mehrad
Yes does it properly but still it costs ~1K.
That is why I believe to that scientists have to change the Infrastructure they use for research publishing/review and funding.
We need a scientific network that university/state lends the infrastructure to keep research progress on it, instead of using private journals archiving our articles and data. The Infra is here: we just need to transform it to a social scientific network, hopefully will be one way.

Mehrad, to NixOS
@Mehrad@fosstodon.org avatar

A question for and folks:

I want to start a R project and I want to keep everything about this project static and frozen in time. I know nix-shell is a thing, but:

  1. is there a better/smoother approach?

  2. is it possible to also have a service/daemon running in that nix-shell ? The editor I use (Rstudio) has desktop and server versions, and I would rather have the server version running on a beefy remote machine and I ssh into it.

Boosting is highly appreciated :)

@bioinformatician_next_door@kafeneio.social avatar

@Mehrad @RossGayler @brodriguesco
Isn't it easier to just make a docker container that includes the Rstudio server, R, R packages etc?
have a look at this:
https://github.com/ConYel/dashboard_survey/blob/main/dashboard_container/Dockerfile

bioinformatician_next_door,
@bioinformatician_next_door@kafeneio.social avatar

@brodriguesco @Mehrad @RossGayler
Well I have worked with R studio server on Docker during my PhD and I can say for 2 years I didn't have any issues on reproducibility once I learnt how to use it and bind correctly my datasets folders.
And depends on the images that you use.
I know for sure that can be quite reproducible to the bit.

bioinformatician_next_door,
@bioinformatician_next_door@kafeneio.social avatar

@brodriguesco @Mehrad @RossGayler
Regarding Rocker images, at first I was using them too but were/are quite heavy so I started using the one with base alpine from https://r-hub.github.io/rhub/
I haven't worked with Nix but I would be happy to test it if there is something streamlined already.
