when you end up with someones iphone (or mac or ipad or whatever) and you want to wipe it, the computer needs you to enter the credentials of their icloud account. it tells you whose icloud credentials you need, just like having the username entered but asking for the password.
icloud usernames can be used to send imessages to the owner of the account, like you could call someone with their phone number or IM them with their screen name.
the idea is that a thief ought not be able to just wipe and repurpose a stolen device but a gifted or purchased device should provide a method to contact the person so the new owner can wipe it.
it works pretty good because if a local thief contacts you trying to get you to let them have your device you can call the cops and you already have a line of contact with the person who has the stolen goods so the police can’t even say “yeah whatever, we don’t care, its gone heres some tissues” and it’s very easy to track them down. it also works great if you buy a used device from someone and they won’t clear it to wipe because if you have a transaction record like on ebay or facebook marketplace or something you can also go to the authorities and say “hey, i bought this, here’s proof, and the person i bought it from won’t relinquish ownership of it”
what happens now is thieves ship a bunch of phones off to somewhere outside the juristiction of the victims governments and then they break em down to be sold for parts. now there’s nothing the authorities can do and the thieves accomplices can try to socially engineer the victims into giving them what they want with impunity.
that’s whats happening in the linked article, the victim is being harassed by whoever bought their phone from a thief.

It’s possible you aren’t sticking to that flawed understanding though, so let’s talk about design language and Memphis. You’re right that designs are informed by their tools and mediums. For Memphis group those tools were drafting paper and those mediums were chipboard and naugahide. Memphis group made couches and shelves, not software or digital art.
Now that’s not to say that only stuff from a specific cadre of Italian designers made during a short period is Memphis and everything else is sparkling crayon scribbles, only that the stuff we actually recognize as Memphis wasn’t pixel art by any measure.

If you choose either of those ways, make a backup using the windows backup wizard. No matter how you choose to reinstall windows, having that backup lets you save your files and settings. Always have a backup!
I’m not gonna link them, but you got a lot of posts about using a second drive to install windows so that its update process doesn’t remove your ability to boot into Linux. Many people do that and there’s nothing wrong with it.
I think it’s better to let windows update mess up your bootloader and learn how to fix it (it’s always incredibly easy but the process varies slightly depending on your distribution). There’s no guarantee that windows update won’t mess up bootloaders on drives it isn’t installed on.
If I were you, and I could look into the future of what’s gonna work, speaking from a couple decades of experience, I’d make a windows install media or two, make a backup or two and pick a distribution to try off a live usb first then if I liked it, I’d install it dual boot so I could switch back to windows just by picking it when the computer starts up.

I use a third gen i5 laptop as a daily driver and run mid-poly count cad and cam, host windows vms and do everything else but play games that people expect out of a computer (no time for games nowadays).
Look into installing more ram and ssds in the old desktops and they’ll skip along happily for another decade or until mainline kernels drop support for their instruction set. I’m running Debian and rhel (seriously look into this, they have programs to get cheap licenses into the hands of educational institutions and provide good support) but probably anything is fine, just figure out account security so kids don’t go around copy and pasting whatever stack exchanges llm suggests into bash.
E: I read the rest of the thread and there’s a lot of “this worked for my computers/this worked for me” advice. Not hating, I literally gave that exact advice myself.
Call red hat sales if you’re in the us, I guess suse sales if you’re in europe or india. They’ll most likely set you up with a pilot program license and if not they’ll walk you through the process of creating one or two accounts to work around the “ten free machines but then you gotta pay” limitation.
You’ll be able to sell it to administration as “this program gets students in the drivers seat of the systems used for stem research, ai and android development for minimal upgrade cost and no new units. Developing familiarity with these systems will give students who pursue those studies a tangible advantage over their peers.”
If you have coworkers in computer education or it, sell it to them as a path to get more certs at a reduced or nonexistent cost (red hat and suse have their own cert programs that they use for training like ms and cisco do).
