I read about this in relation to this fandom essay about fandom gatekeeping:

https://caelum-in-the-avatarverse.tumblr.com/post/750869348329078784/fandom-can-do-a-little-gatekeeping-as-a-treat

edited to add: use of the word "tourist" for some types of fans might be upsetting so consider this a CW - I've been informed it's a gamergate dogwhistle, but I am not making any judgment on whether it is used that way in this essay

@geraineon yeah, my fic has been locked for years for pretty much this reason. I honestly have limited fucks to give about LLM scraping, and I really doubt I produce the kind of thing that would be profitable to steal, but... the fact that there were delineators of "in the community" and "out there on the wider internet" was a positive thing for me, when I found fandom. It helped me understand that what I was discovering was something special and different with its own history and culture.

It's a pity that the technology never aligned such that we could get an e-ink pda

@foone I have a moaan inkpalm on order which is basically a cheap version of the boox palma... so, not really the same thing in that it's just a kind of slow shitty android device, lol.

The light phone seems pretty close, though! https://www.thelightphone.com/

(feel free to explain or not explain it, depending on what you find more amusing to think of me reading it)

@whitequark The Edmonton Oilers decide to change their name to keep pace in a post fossil fuel economy. They decide to go with something their fans will be able to remember: the Edmonton Eulers.

They hold a press conference to announce the change. A journalist asks, "Isn't the new name a little derviative?"

The manager answers, "yes, but only of ourselves."

Behold, my stuff! at my place!!!!!

( @villainousfriend here is the linkding! and @rigormorphis if you are still struggling with uploading to espial, this had no problem with the upload for me!)

ok I managed to disable ipv6 and get the Haskell compiler installed, but still... am not anywhere near figuring out how to install espial. Also, am getting a little-- I mean. I know this is probably intended for people more knowledgeable than me. But I feel like I'm mostly at a point where I can follow instructions wrt Linux systems! And it seems like maybe some important parts of the instructions are missing? Like, the "download espial" part? Sure, I guess that's implied, but like... idk getting bit of a draw the rest of the fucking owl vibe from this readme

bloodripelives,
@bloodripelives@federatedfandom.net avatar

also @rigormorphis idk if you saw this already but I found these instructions for the docker install? https://www.reddit.com/r/selfhosted/comments/10qkzh4/comment/j6trma1/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button mostly this comment is reassuring to me in that someone else things that "dev hasn't made it easy to get this repo up and running"

but then the comment under it is OP giving up and installing linkding https://github.com/sissbruecker/linkding Which also looks very pinboard-like, and would require me to actually figure out Docker but seems a lot better documented...

Holy shit... I just learned that complimentary and complementary are two different words... and I learned it from an electronic devices lecture 😭

I mean I knew it had multiple MEANINGS, I just didn't realize it also had multiple spellings. And I have a 0% chance of remembering which is which.

I really hate that there is almost no way to purchase DRM-free ebooks of books I actually want to read. I know some publishers especially of sff do it by default, but I don't have much interest in eg Tor's books. Piracy is literally the only way to get ebooks that I actively want to pay for, and it's fucked

bloodripelives,
@bloodripelives@federatedfandom.net avatar

I have given up on the library/overdrive, because the DRM-breaker tool in Calibre seems to not work on them any more, and KOreader doesn't display DRM files. And ebooks are such a bad deal for libraries I feel bad downloading them from there anyway

bloodripelives,
@bloodripelives@federatedfandom.net avatar

@kate interesting, thank you! Though the issue for me is mostly at the publisher level-- most major publishers don't allow their books to be published without DRM, and I tend to find a book I want to read through recs or reviews first and then go looking for it, instead of searching repositories of books directly.
