Australian prime minister labels Elon Musk ‘an arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law’ (www.theguardian.com)

Australia’s prime minister has labelled X’s owner, Elon Musk, an “arrogant billionaire who thinks he is above the law” as the rift deepens between Australia and the tech platform over the removal of videos of a violent stabbing in a Sydney church....

I’m getting some springy marshy boardwalk this weekend. Can’t wait.

dickbutt? It’s just a Reddit thing as far as I remember. Was constantly posted over there.

That and certain copy pasta just got annoying. I’d hoped it had stayed there.

‘worked’?

What we’ve done and are doing in Australia is fucked. What is wrong with you?

Nice try, you grotty little person.

Such compassion. So genuine. You’re a credit to the human race.

You too? I used to love them. Grew up on them. The worst part you’d see was when the lion got the gazelle, but you’d think ‘well the lion has to eat too’.

Now all of them end with ‘and numbers are on the decline… Their habitat is shrinking… The ice is breaking away… They’re being hunted to extinction’.

I can’t swallow the bitterness.

I went to relocate a spider outside yesterday like I normally do. Scooped it up in Tupperware and took it outside without much thought.

Only when I released it did I realise it was a redback. Those I usually do murder if I find them in the house, mainly out of concern for my dog. I’m now reconsidering that approach. It was no biggie catching or releasing it (huntsmans are a whole other story… So fast and jumpy) so maybe I’ll do that in future.

I really think it’s cool that our interpretation of a picture of a simple, benign object can be so influenced by another piece of art.

If anything this image should evoke memories of childhood play, it’s also objectively pleasing in terms of colour.

But because most of us have seen a specific movie, we see it as a threatening, malicious object. Cool.

I just do it as a courtesy to the people as I’m usually making fun of them in forums they didn’t originally post in. It’s not like I’m thinking about it as being doxxing, more just that I’m poking fun at someone behind their back - if they’re a public figure that’s one thing - but the average Joe? Just feels impolite. That’s why I do it anyway.

There’s a family of them near where I live in Canberra. I think I counted 6 but it may have been more. I’m always happy to see native wildlife thriving in the suburbs but then I realise I’ve lived here for years and years and never seen nor heard them here, it’s likely because of their loss of habitat due to the Orroral valley fire during black summer.

I’m also pretty conscious of all the animals listed in the article that they have to compete with - all in abundance here.

I tried Kombucha for the first time the other day.

I don’t get it.

It wasn’t terrible but I’d rather have a beer or a juice. Not whatever that was.

I guess it’s like I can’t find a use case for it. Maybe I’ll try it again but it didn’t grab me the first time. I’m a savoury drink fan - bloody Mary’s and super dirty dry martinis are my favourite.

Maybe it was the carbonation I didn’t like. Things to ponder…

The damaged tree likely could still have been a home for animals. This, not so much.

I don’t understand the need so many feel to make sure that human fingerprints are visible on everything. Like carving initials in trees, spray painting on boulders, stacking stones at the beach.

Can’t we look out at the natural world and see that it’s the absence of us, or absence of any signs we were there that makes it beautiful?

You’re probably right with regards to this tree. Couldn’t it have been carved as something more in keeping with the natural environment though? I suppose a fucking human hand is emblematic of environmental destruction so maybe it fits.

Shorter princess makes up for it with loooong arm.

This is quite beautiful though. I like the colours and the comfortable way they hold each other.

Alternate ways of communicating/saying "I'm listening"?

Quick background: I live in a house with my sibling and their parents. My sibling is not legally or biologically related to me, but they ARE my sibling. My sibling’s parents are not my parents, but we are collectively a ‘family,’ in many senses of the word. I call my sibling’s parents “the Elders of Plumley” as...

It may be in your interests to explain to people exactly what you just said to me.

My current boss is ND and very open about it. It means I don’t get frustrated when he’s not communicating the way I’m used to; I don’t take offense to certain behaviours; but also, I can comfortably say to him ‘hold up, let me finish what I was about to say’ wait for him to process that bit, then continue.

You sound similar to him. He knows that the majority of people are going to feel frustration or offense because some of his ways of relating aren’t what is perceived as ‘normal’, or he comes across as plain rude. So when I started work he explained all this to me. Sometimes he is just being a fuckhead - like anyone can be, he doesn’t have a free pass - and I’ll call him out on it. But day to day, to avoid miscommunication or irritation, we’ve found a way of interacting positively.

So I think for you, you’ve got to realise that it’s not about shutting down. I think even in a passing conversation with someone you don’t know, you can probably say ’ Hey, I’m ND - sometimes I can interrupt/talk over you, I don’t mean to - I’m trying to listen but it’s hard for me to stay focused’.

Maybe review any videos or podcasts that hold your attention and figure out if there’s a speech pattern that helps? Is it short sentences with pauses? Is it asking rhetorical questions? Or is that what makes your mind wander?

Anyway, I’m no expert in this specifically but I’m a writer and do a fair amount of public speaking. You can tell when you’re losing someone and I typically don’t think it’s the audience’s job to change how they listen, but rather how I speak. For you though, I think it’s a bit of give and take.
