https://www.lemonde.fr/pixels/visuel/2024/05/19/le-service-pixels-a-10-ans-en-une-decennie-internet-a-bien-change_6234069_4408996.html

Because I care about the planet, I just bought a Fairphone 5 to replace a dying 6-year smartphone that I will try to repair with specialists. Why do I share?

Because my new phone is slower than the 6-yo one, with a smaller battery capacity. So you'd better optimize your websites, because I'm not the only customer with this mindset. A sustainable web means more progress, faster, on the web performance front. Let's get to it.

"We used React to build an composable experience on our homepage, featuring a configurable module to display all the key elements that make our brand… that we don't really use because the marketing team is actually using the A/B test solution to contribute. But we don't care, as analytics confirmed the homepage is not really visited." Based on a true story. Several, actually. Over years of practice.

Do you really need a whole SPA framework for the body of a product details page consisting of a photo, a bit of text, a table with details and an add to cart form (that you could Ajaxify easily with progressive enhancement and only a few line of carefully crafted JS)?

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

Javascriptification of the Front-End has other consequences than the enshitification of many user experiences that shouldn't be so complex.

For example, when a company transforms its MPA website into an SPA, it shifts computing power, particularly with regard to web page composition, from the server to the client. From the point of view of the EU's carbon footprint directive (), all the tons of CO2 emissions related to this disappear completely from the company's report.

wingo, to random

i am impressed at v8's ability to get more complicated. you would think it would stop at some point

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

@Paxxi @wingo I can point you to one, but you have to be very compact to get in.

You know what the coolest feature about the Web is?

(It's none of the things that have been added to it in the last 30 years.)

The coolest feature of the World Wide Web is that a fucking HTML page from like 1993 still renders perfectly fine today.

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs and faster than any js-fueled lage coded on the last 10 years.

"The Performance Inequality Gap, 2024", Alex Russel (@slightlyoff)
https://infrequently.org/2024/01/performance-inequality-gap-2024/

"We got to a place where performance has been a constant problem in large part because a tribe of programmers convinced themselves that it wasn't and wouldn't be. The circa '13 narrative that:

  • CPUs would keep getting faster
  • Networks would get better, or at least not get worse.
  • Organisations had all learned the lessons of Google and FaceBook's adventures in Ajax.

was all bullshit"

Gonna save you the time of reading all those “top errors of 2023” posts churned out by the marketing teams at your favorite corporate accessibility consultancy (and the odd overlay vendor) — they are the same issues AS THE LAST DECADE OR TWO.

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

@aardrian probably the same for all Web Quality issues: security, accessibility, internationalization, etc. Poor quality is a lack of sponsoring and governance, not knowledge.

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

@aardrian Never heard of: "We let the money fall on the ground and the pigeons stole it. Shit, a lack of rigor no doubt". Because a lack of rigor is often a lack of process, which is the result of bad governance and wrong prioritization. If your process implies that a single person may lack rigor and do something that damage your product or service, it's probably that the company just don't care enough.

Use Firefox.
No excuses.

boostmarks,
@boostmarks@hachyderm.io avatar

As a web performance professional, I deal with Core Web Vitals every day. That's not to say that Chrome is my only browser; I use Firefox for all my personal browsing, on computer and mobile. Using both browsers allows me to say that Firefox is lightning fast and doesn't need crucial features to compete with Chrome. It needs better distribution and a lot of communication, because it's up against a company that's sinking billions of dollars into owning the web, and is gradually succeeding.
