Is anyone else listening to the “Dark Star”episode of “A History of Rock Music in 500 Songs?” It weighs in at over four hours and so far (I’m an hour and a half in) covers mostly familiar ground. But, I’m also finding it extremely fascinating to hear the history of the from a non-head perspective. I’d love to know what @mrcompletely and @bourgwick think!

@thediemustfall @mrcompletely i'd read a transcript but after he dismissed the entirety of dennis mcnally's bio as "fiction" (in a social media thread) due to the memoir interludes, not really inclined to give it much energy.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@thediemustfall @mrcompletely i see it cited on the page so i guess he got over it, but it was an odd & offputting dismissal. he'd been complaining that there were no well-sourced/linear bios of the dead & mcnally was recommended, but he argued passionately that the memoir/composite interludes disqualify it.

@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

@mrcompletely @DaveG924 @thediemustfall yeah, exactly what i mean about being ready for the 3-volume version. though, having recently dipped into '80s sections for research, there's also some incredible detail there.

people will make jokes about CDs, but the end of CDBaby's CD/LP manufacturing & distribution service is heavy, the loss of a real piece of infrastructure for independent musicians. https://arstechnica.com/culture/2023/05/end-of-an-era-cd-baby-stops-distributing-artists-cds-vinyl-and-other-goods/

sunday zones at union pool in . heady, dense by emergency group, like the moody & conversational parts of jambands minus the goofiness & face-scrunching peaks. debut gig by heat manager, choogle-adjacent alt-wryness, with only the barest hints that their members used to be in a primal dead cover band. rare side set by danny arakaki of , feat. nice fat leads by mike bones of weak signal.

Emergency Group - musicians playing guitar, bass, drums, keyboard
Heat Manager at Union Pool - guitar, drums, bass

good news friends! the may soon be replacing the benches at your local subway stop with a luxurious & (dare i say it?) revolutionary new way to wait for trains. too many people were sitting for too long & we simply can't have that.

- thought 's 1978 solo debut was kinda corny when i picked this up 10 or so years ago, but something clicked & totally feeling the honey-voiced tex-mex-grass, a musical pun that actually works. a postcard from the unsettled smuggler-filled desert on the far side of margaritaville.

@mrcompletely honestly surprised it didn't find a bigger audience. seems like a natural place to go in the era, somewhere between outlaw country & post-hippie & bluegrass & buffett.

5/14/83 greek theatre: ultra-econo 1st set, not even 50 minutes. weir/mydland/lesh lock into nifty pattern under FRIEND OF THE DEVIL solos. crisp SHAKEDOWN STREET has excitable vocal yamming by weir/mydland. generally tasty 58-minute PLAYING IN THE BAND > CHINA DOLL > DRUMZ > SPACE > THE WHEEL > PLAYING IN THE BAND > MORNING DEW. PLAYING finds 2nd gear before shifting back to theme, bigger thrills when CHINA DOLL upshifts. white-hot DEW crescendo. mega-falsetto weir in SUNSHINE DAYDREAM. [2/3]

memories of the dead at the greek, tonight in 1983. when looking for stories about ‘80s shows, i’ve noticed that there are way fewer for bay area gigs than most out-of-town appearances, where every show seems to be annotated with life-changing experiences. i think maybe a long-reaching sign of how the dead meant something different to hometown crowds? episodes of deadhead tv, an '80s public access show, now going up. episode 1 features greek theater '88 & our collective pal @dgans representing the minglewood town council. (haven't had a chance to watch yet, but went semi-looking for these for "heads" & excited they finally surfaced.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2N53lBOjsY8

hey fam, what is going on in the left channel here? Because it sure as shit sounds kind of like Keith is playing a theremin, but pitched too accurately for me to believe that. What is this? Some kind of weird Rhodes effect? @theheatwarps thoughts? It clearly resolves into glassy '73 Rhodes tone at the end

Anyway check it out, it's great regardless. Shoutout to the GD Discord for the find

@mrcompletely @theheatwarps ooh thanks! i'd wondered if it was an ondes martenot or something like that. i believe it also appears in the 10/25/73 dark star, but i think those were the only 2 times i noticed it. he also plays the venue's wurlitzer on 10/23.

this week, the -cast heads to des moines ’73 a few days before the 50th anniversary, feat. the upstart promoters music circuit presentations (& their statewide DIY ticketing system), a visit to out of town tours, A+ bill graham stories, a pair of never-seen-again guitars, donna jean & candace brightman’s accounts of an indoor fireworks fight, & a WTF connection (which i won’t spoil here) that i’m certain @ThoughtsOnGD beamed in from elsewhere. https://www.dead.net/deadcast/here-comes-sunshine-des-moines-51373

well, the bad news is that roscoe mitchell tested positive for covid & won't be playing with the art ensemble of chicago tonight in brooklyn. the less-bad news is that shabaka hutchings from sons of kemet/comet is coming will be filling in.

- elegant all-star session from 1974 starring (to my ears) bass heavy dave holland & the sweeping melancholia of vassar clements. hot pickin', sure, but more importantly beautiful. picked this up today & on my 4th listen.

bourgwick,

@mrcompletely oh yeah been deep into that recently via your pointer (just played on my radio show last week) & then saw this today & it was the perfect right-album-right-time pickup.

i can't believe that a.) marshall allen & chris corsano are playing a duo set tonight at union pool in & that b.) i'm gonna get to see it! (sweet poster too, by alex holden.)

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

at union pool, full freakout trio of ryan sawyer (drums), nate wooley (trumpet), & lester st. louis (cello), building to density quickly then pulling back into conversation, vocalisation, extended technique, little tornadoes, etc. great moment of fluttering drums & st. louis playing under the cello bridge.

bourgwick,
@bourgwick@heads.social avatar

wow! saturnian titan marshall allen (99 this month!) & drum hero chris corsano with surprise guest avant-trombonist dick griffin (84 himself) at union pool in . wild spaces by marshall's electronic valve instrument & corsano's dancing ultra-responsive drums (maybe the deepest i've heard somebody engage with the EVI), plus a few standard arkestral themes/motifs/call-and-responses (the straightest i've ever heard corsano play).

20 years ago this week, my dad & i went to florida for a family wedding in disney world, ate mad edibles together & explored epcot, then drove across the state & saw at sunfest. was the last time i saw dylan play guitar for more than half the night. they did "you ain't goin' nowhere" & dylan seemingly directed the chorus at a radio contest winner sitting in an easy chair in the front row. just discovered there's some video of "drifter's escape" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5E_zFyi3b3A
