✎ Transparent border: https://bradfrost.com/blog/post/transparent-borders/

Quick rebound off of
@davatron5000's post about the utility of border-color: transparent. It's a helpful technique for reducing janky behavior and creating sturdy themes in a design system.

An animated gif of a blue button that adds a border when the cursor hovers over it, resulting in a shift in the button's size

Written almost 10 years ago, "Just" remains one of the most impactful posts I've written: https://bradfrost.com/blog/post/just/

“Just” is a dangerous word.

React 19 Beta is here, and finally has better support for HTML custom elements: https://react.dev/blog/2024/04/25/react-19#whats-new-in-react-19

"React 19 adds full support for custom elements and passes all tests on Custom Elements Everywhere."

This is a big deal for Web Component-powered design systems. We've had to create/manage a special React-specific wrapper layer for a long time to deal with React's (mis)handling of custom elements. Other frameworks Just Work w Web Components, so I'm glad React is joining the club

It’s the End of the Web as We Know It https://msn.com/en-us/news/technology/it-s-the-end-of-the-web-as-we-know-it/ar-AA1nt2as

This is a pretty damning read about LLMs' impact on the web. Just how SEO produced an extremely lucrative-yet-icky industry, optimizing web content for AI models seems inevitable.

It feels like CSS has come such a long way. Nearly all of the major pain points that developers have faced for decades are either resolved or well on their way. This is a good thing!

Of course the web is never done, but it does feel like an inflection point.

Here's a fun question: what components do you feel would be most valuable to be included in a Global Design System? (https://bigmedium.com/ideas/a-global-design-system.html)

🎶 Last night I recorded a cover of La femme d-'argent by Air. I've always loved Air, and this bass line grooves so much. It was a lot of fun to re-create! https://soundcloud.com/frostfrost-1/la-femme-dargent-air-cover

✎ What's Next for a Global Design System: https://bradfrost.com/blog/post/whats-next-for-a-global-design-system/

I've had so many fantastic conversations around the idea of a Global Design System, and in this post I respond to the healthy skepticism around it, and share a status update and next steps for this effort.

I was able to chat with @chriscoyier and @davatron5000 about a Global Design System on the @shoptalkshow https://shoptalkshow.com/601/

Chris had a great post sharing thoughts and skepticisms about the idea. We were able to chat about a lot of it on the show! https://chriscoyier.net/2024/02/05/thoughts-on-a-global-design-system/

‘The Mortimiser' is something I’ve been chipping away at for a few months now.

It uses the Bob Mortimer naming formula of ordinary first name with a noun/nonsense/mundane word. Who will you be today? Kenneth Warhammer? Agnes Buttery?

That's all it does. Nothing fancy!

🤖🤖🤖 AI and Design Systems 🤖🤖🤖 https://bradfrost.com/blog/post/ai-and-design-systems/

In this post, we demonstrate all of the great ways we (especially Big Medium's resident AI expert, Kevin Coyle) have been applying AI tools to many facets of design system work.

brad_frost,
@brad_frost@mastodon.social avatar

Security and privacy – AI needs to clear a high bar for security and privacy, which translates into on-prem solutions

Human-owned input/output – It’s crucial for humans to control what gets fed into AI, and for humans to have the ability to modify/fix any AI-generated output.

brad_frost,
@brad_frost@mastodon.social avatar

Enhancement vs replacement – Teams shouldn’t have to throw away all of their hard-earned knowledge, architecture, and assets in order to make use of AI.
