It is stunning how much confusion arises from including the word "design" in a concept (e.g. responsive design, atomic design, design systems, design principles, design sprints, etc). Lowercase-d "design" often gets conflated with capital-D "Design" (especially relating to people with Designer as a job title), which absolutely confuses the shit out of entire groups of people.

When done well, design system assets, processes, and guidelines can elevate digital product quality while helping teams work better/faster together.

When done poorly, design systems can reinforce unhealthy power structures and create unwelcome rigidity.

Tools are fantastic, we absolutely want tooling to continue to improve, and automating certain tasks make sense. BUT! Too often we see teams looking to tools as a panacea to solve their human problems.

Having the most sophisticated, automated tooling in place doesn't guarantee success. Can tools help? Absolutely. But above all, work hard to build relationships and foster a culture of collaboration and communication.
