brbposting,

Time to re-integrate portal litter into our vocabularies

Besides “tho” for “though”, soundin’ hella native brah 😎

CEO of Google Says It Has No Solution for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information (futurism.com)

You know how Google’s new feature called AI Overviews is prone to spitting out wildly incorrect answers to search queries? In one instance, AI Overviews told a user to use glue on pizza to make sure the cheese won’t slide off (pssst…please don’t do this.)...

brbposting,

There appear to be some valid use cases outside of creating spam and plagiarizing other people’s work

Like translation, which has already taken money out of the pockets of 40% of translators?

brbposting,

Saddened to see Angelfire being overrun by Neopets.

brbposting,

“Are we making progress? Yes, we are,” he added. “We have definitely made progress when we look at metrics on factuality year on year. We are all making it better, but it’s not solved.”

Let’s be fair with our headlines!

CEO of Google Says It Is Still Solving for Its AI Providing Wildly Incorrect Information [and is okay with people dying from rattlesnake bite misinformation in the meantime]

brbposting,

I’d be okay to transfer. It is nice linking to and being linked to Spotify given it’s the default in my circles.

Sorry artists I know they pay nothing :(

What song should I play for my bathroom neighbors?

The work bathroom is currently a warzone, on their phone speakers people like to play music, play games at full blast, and one guy likes to chill to ambient rainforest. What song can I play to passive aggressively make it known that I don’t want to listen to their tik tok feeds while I work out my demons?

brbposting,

I’m not sure the average “video” conference includes someone with their camera on.

I’d guess it’s like 60% of Zooms have at least one person on camera but it’s quite common for people to skip video. Don’t see any stats about it.

brbposting,

Ahaha

I can see it if someone is tracker averse and has noscript or an Archive (.ph …) tool integrated into their workflow

Right, Hamas alone eats 100% of aid…

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/4a92e099-b360-4089-abbf-2cdb9e0326f2.jpeg

Question I’ve had (obviously Israeli government sucks but trying to understand Hamas):

Is there any sanity in Hamas’s calculus? Could any of them say “well, it’s been hard losing 35,000 of our people, BUT thanks to taking the hostages we … got a couple prisoners exchanged … and …”? Did Oct 7 do anything for Palestine besides getting world eyeballs on the region? The visibility seems a little useless given the death toll.

And will they have any domestic support after a certain number of casualties?

btw I could see myself being utterly irrational when backed into a corner for decades, just trying to make some sense of whether they even have a game plan

brbposting,

These comparisons are losing efficacy as it becomes more and more about the apps.

And I’d guess it’ll become harder and harder to gauge discount pricing as deals are more and more often targeted. They can’t just download each app and put in different ZIP codes - price sensitive vs. price insensitive buyers will get different deals.

Believe we’ll have to look at receipts / order histories of large numbers of people across regions to get a good sense of how pricing is really working.

Edit: I can see a day when all fast food chains have “go fuck yourself” pricing on the menus. You’re a family on a rare road trip or a businessperson expensing a meal? Aight you might pay $20 for your McDouble just to get back on the highway, or while everything else in Podunk, Nowhere is closed. But anybody who actually wants to eat fast food monthly or more often? You better get the app, unless you wanna pay double for everything on the menu. That sweet sweet data and opportunity to price discriminate got the analysts salivating.

1,000 Harvard Students Walk Out of Commencement to Support 13 Seniors Barred from Graduation over Gaza (www.democracynow.org)

More than a thousand Harvard students walked out of their commencement ceremony yesterday to support 13 undergraduates who were barred from graduating after they participated in the Gaza solidarity encampment in Harvard Yard....

brbposting,

College (esp private schools, more than community colleges) can certainly be overpriced for plenty of people.

Though…

What percentage of Big 4 and big tech company employees have college degrees?

brbposting,

SearXNG: poor man’s Kagi (one seemingly reputable instance)

On iOS, I set my default search to DuckDuckGo, and enabled Hyperweb on the DDG domain to redirect to SearXNG. I use a Google Images bookmark saved as a favorite when I need images (SearXNG results inferior even when using Google as the sole engine).

I anecdotally suspect Kagi of astroturfing btw, but after some free trials it seems to be about the best Google alternative - gotta be [earning like] a [US-based] knowledge worker though, or really care about search.

Floating Island Garden (lemmy.world)

Our retention pond in our neighborhood has a lot of algae and problematic plant growth due to the surrounding farms and lawn runoff, so we’re experimenting with a floating island to pull nutrients out before they can cause problems. This will also provide some interesting flowering plants, and more fish habitats....

brbposting,

Hey it might be worth another look… my read was that it was a very nice reply, just above this comment I’m responding to :)

brbposting,

Man and with the way they’re built today, there’s probably no hotkey that e.g. Alfred or Keyboard Maestro could help you press to navigate between conversations. Though I wouldn’t be surprised to find I’m wrong and that somebody’s figured out workarounds.

Google Search’s “udm=14” trick lets you kill AI search for good | Ars Technica (arstechnica.com)

Tack “&udm=14” on to the end of a normal search, and you’ll be booted into the clean 10 blue links interface. While Google might not let you set this as a default, if you have a way to automatically edit the Google search URL, you can create your own defaults.

brbposting,

Nice, how about for an odd emoji someone just used elsewhere (but then Voyager ran out of RAM I think):

brbposting,

I was gonna ask if your OS displays 🧑‍🧒 in color, or if you were searching a different emoji.

https://sh.itjust.works/pictrs/image/e64f0bf4-b390-4d0b-8ad9-b3333ede0ff8.jpeg

Less than two hours later, Google forgot how to find the right emoji!

Regarding my pondering, now I see Emojipedia moved the by-platform Emoji icons to the Designs tab.

In the meantime I learned Wikipedia redirects 🧑‍🧒 to “Family” :)
