I mean, almost all social media has a learning curve but Lemmy is one that if you don't put in the effort you're not going to learn it and use it. It's not seamless to master....
That doesn't sound so bad, the problem with making it so that everyone can use it is that suddenly you've got everyone using it. Personally I could do without the low-effort memes and copypasta comments, and I can just browse Reddit for ten minutes if I do need that fix!
When I first found out it was an interesting concept that I was pretty neutral on but the more I engage/lurk with the community the more I enjoy it....
Yeah, my concern is that the trolls will be just as visible as the recent comments, and that we'll get overloaded with "take my upvote", "this is the way", and "nice" comments which are essentially spam
Exactly, who is using bog-standard texts and phonecalls in this day and age? Do they also use internet explorer because that's the default too? Even if you're not on Signal, everyone and their mums has WhatsApp, I don't see how this is even an issue!
I’m a firm believer that inching towards a more private life and future is a good thing in and of itself. However, I also believe that striving for a healthy social life and finding individual happiness is very important....
If you want to use Windows, don't use that install for anything personal (i.e. use it for games but do everything else on your phone or wherever). If you want to use Linux then check out ProtonDB to see how well your Windows binaries will run on Linux using Proton - I'm having a great time on the Steam Deck and I think most of the tips for that are applicable to most Linux installs!
I've seen the post saying that the lead developer is stepping down, I've seen his accusations of abuse. I've seen enormous write-ups which make questionable claims about how he's the devil himself. I've seen a lot of rumour and hearsay, and now I've got no idea what to think....
Some people have been asking which communities they should join first, so I posted some remote communities you can subscribe to on the sidebar on the homepage :)...
With Reddit's encroaching IPO and their poorly planned API changes, we need a place to keep up with privacy topics that isn't tied to an anti-privacy, centralized sinking ship site....
Do you think disabling downvoting will work? While it does encourage people to just downvote things that are already downvoted, the alternative is that you have no way to mark bad/lazy/rude content that isn't actually worth reporting, and you end up in the Facebook-like situation of low-effort stuff filling the space. Hopefully this won't happen while the community is small, but that will probably change eventually!
Do you know if it's possible to hide all upvote/downvote scores on comments? I've often wondered if that would kerb the "groupthink" as people wouldn't be pre-influenced by the number, but it would still allow sorting by popular and filtering-out of mass-downvoted comments.
Has there been any update on this? Last I heard the rumour was that they were distributing proprietary keys from the Wii which they shouldn't have been, any idea if that was the cause of the DMCA?
Anyone else feel that Lemmy won't attract anyone not interested in learning new ways to do things?
