So the Tories are are considering actual real-terms benefits cuts "to make space for tax reductions" in a period of high inflation.

The callousness of the Tories utterly, utterly disgusting. Is there no low to which they will not stoop?

Frank Ryan was born in County Limerick on 11 September 1902. He participated in the Spanish Civil War on the Popular Front side, fighting for the Comintern-organised International Brigades (retroactively known as the Connolly Column). After being captured by pro-Nationalist Italians, he was sentenced to death. 1/2

Ryan was released from prison in 1940 with the help of German authorities. He then collaborated with Nazi Germany, believing a German invasion of Britain would be advantageous to the Irish nationalist cause. 2/2

bullivant,

@StefanSockeKriekbier Very much so. The Nazis would have crushed the Irish nationalist movement.

The state of this waiver I have to sign before my son can go to a birthday party! โ€œโ€ฆthe โ€œReleased Partiesโ€ shall not be responsible for such injuries/damages, even if caused in whole or part by the negligence or fault of the Released Partiesโ€ !?!?

bullivant,

@ottocrat I'd like to see what happened if they attempted to use the waiver in court to defend against a claim for negligence.

On the 9 September 1845 the Dublin Evening Post officially reported that the Potato Blight had arrived in Ireland. The disease had previously been reported in Belgium, but this was the first time that it had been spotted in Ireland. It is thought that the first outbreak of Blight may have occurred in Waterford, though there is no concrete proof that it had not previously been unreported elsewhere.

"How Corbyn could give the Mayoralty to the Tories"

So Corbyn standing would give the Mayoralty to a hard right-wing Trump supporting Tory and a fillip to the Tories generally.

Agreed. The top universities will do fine whatever. The rest are increasingly struggling.

So the Illegal Migration Act means that the Tories will no longer be able to use the overseas aid budget to pay for housing asylum seekers in country. This is because reclassifying asylum seekers as 'illegal migrants' means that they are removed from the purview of the aid budget.

So the Act is going to cost the Home Office ยฃ4 billion a year. You couldn't make it up.

bullivant,

@Robsterthermidor Yes, very much so. It was a barbaric, inhumane, (and, so, very Tory) thing to do to use aid intended for some of the most impoverished people on the planet to pay for their own domestic expenses.

Christy Brown died on 7 September 1981. He was an Irish writer and painter whose cerebral palsy allowed him to write or type only with the toes of one foot. His most recognized work is his autobiography, titled Down All The Days (1954). It was later made into a 1989 Academy Award-winning film My Left Foot, starring Daniel Day-Lewis as Brown. 1/2

bullivant,

Brown died at the age of 49 after choking during dinner. His body was found to have significant bruising, which led many to believe that his wife had physically abused him. 2/2

FT:
"UK pulls back from clash with Big Tech over private messaging - Ministers will not immediately enforce online safety bill powers to scan apps after WhatsApp threatened shutdown"

So the Tories fold under threats by the likes of WhatsApp to pull out of the country. Pathetic after all their posturing. ๐Ÿคฆโ€โ™‚๏ธ
