PubKit Officially Launches Closed Beta (wedistribute.org)

PubKit is a spinoff project from Pixelfed, and is used by the project’s lead developer to actually develop Pixelfed. It has some pretty great ideas about mocking up entities and data, testing data streams, and working with different server implementations to see where pieces might differ.

At least he seems to be enjoying it, embracing the creative process and developing whatever he's interested in. Seems like a pretty healthy approach.

I'm pretty sure Dansup is at least 40 senior developers in a trench coat. It makes no sense how many quality projects this guy manages to develop and maintain.

Off the top of my head:

  • PixlFed
  • FediDB
  • PubKit
  • Loops
  • Sup

Is there a more politically and ideologically diverse alternative for Lemmy?

I know the real answer is reddit but I really don’t want to go back now that I’ve already grown used to life without it. I was hoping for Lemmy to be a viable substitute but it isn’t. I can see how this place is wonderful for the certain type of person but that person is not me. My experience during the past 6+ months has...

Absolutely. There's a small handful of sites full of insufferable stalinists. Thank god I didn't discover Lemmy when I was 14, I might have been swallowed right up.

Just block those instances, your experience will be better immediately. And don't hesitate to block individual users, even if they're not breaking any rules or anything. Finding something to be annoying is plenty of reason not to want it as part of your internet experience.

I think Hank Williams III with the Grand Ole Opry Ain't so Grand deserves a shout-out. Basically a song about how the institution that chewed up and then expelled his grandfather can eat shit.

Rather 300 missiles into the iron dome than intro Ukrainian cities.

What worries me more is that Israel has plenty of missiles for both civilians in Gaza and civilians in Iran, and Netanyahu is currently foaming at the mouth over the opportunity to use them.

Well, perfect is a strong word...

Russia's first politically motivated block of a Fediverse server (reestr.rublacklist.net)

Admin team of LGBTQIA.Social Mastodon instance received abuse email from Russian censorship agency, where they demanded to remove an account. The account in question represented a small group that ran a collaborative blog for LGBTQIA youth and adults in Russia....

Obviously they won't give too much of a shit and they're not going to send any mail, they'll just block the server like they would anyway. They are, however, going to be annoyed to be treated as insignificant nobodies. So all in all not a bad idea.

Nothing is found when searching for their names. There's not a thing out there about "Chief Scientist" Mark Linneaus, although he claims to have had an academic career. If he in fact "dedicated more than 20 years to investigating how diet and environment shape mammalian milk production", it is surprising that his name is nowhere to be found on Google Scholar.

Not to get started on the pictures of their alleged cheeses. There's red flags all over the website. At least they don't accept orders, so it looks more like a joke than a scam.

It's a shame though, I would love to try sustainably produced whale cheese.

Which is a radical act to fight tech billionaires like Zuckerberg and Musk. Who have both been reasonably accused of enabling some incredibly awful stuff.

Contributing to the fediverse is probably not the most efficient way to fight for human rights and against billionaires and fascists, but it certainly makes some sort of tiny contribution. So I wouldn't call it pointless. :)

Appears to be a bug in PieFed, doesn't seem to be fixed easily unfortunately. I reported it and included a direct link to the image, but feel free to delete the post if it's cluttering up the community with broken thumbnails!

The advent of AI has illustrated quite clearly that nobody cares, but that doesn't make it less legally binding at least in theory.

If you post content clearly marked as CC BY-NC, you can at least be damn sure any use by commercial actors would be illegal.

I think this is a great idea, and something that should probably be incorporated in a wide variety of ActivityPub integrations.

I know at least Funkwhale already includes license information - maybe it could be integrated in a way that is compatible with how it's solved there?

Let's see how the lawsuits work out.

Courts, traditionally.

What might have stuck with me the most from Kant is the simple principle of treating people as ends, not as means.

Partly because when reading it I didn't immediately understand the meaning of "ends" in this context, so I had to think about it for a while in order to just understand what was going on. Still though, I think it's a valid principle, and one that everyone should strive to live by.

Let's decide on some development priorities

Until now, development has proceeded pretty loosely - we work on whatever seems cool at the time. This is fine but if we collaborate on a decision about priorities then perhaps we'll all be pulling in the same direction a bit more often. If the decision is made in public with all stakeholders, perhaps we'll get some buy-in....

@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

I find my experience here has been mostly solid, so I think you mostly have your priorities right. It's also fun to see experimentation with new features every now and then, so I'm not sure I would even like to see a shift towards focusing only on important stuff.

  • Mastodon integration #101
  • Better handling of video content #147 (I am also interested if PieFed can integrate better with PeerTube, for example an option to browse PeerTube channels)
  • "Announce does not federate properly with Lemmy" #22
  • Fixing the bug where shared images disappear
  • Account deletion #126

I think there's a lot of potential in better integration with services outside of the Threadiverse, and this is something Lemmy has been notoriously bad at (and its developers seemingly uninterested in). Not that PieFed should become like Kbin and serve two separate functions, but there's a lot to be achieved in both ends by making the services more interoperable. There might be some sort of place for both boosts and hashtags, while leading @mentions might sometimes be justifiably hidden. More than important I guess I would find it fun.

As for what's urgent, ensuring core functionality and GDPR compliance seems like a fair priority.

  • Account deletion #126
  • Fix image bug

Not to forget those of us not on lemmy! ;)

In the end what this all produces is freedom of choice - we are no longer constrained to using whatever service has users, but we can use whatever service we want to be using. The users/content will be there independently.

I'm currently 30, and am increasingly confident that 28 was the high point.

@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

In my experience the problem is not really all that age related at all, it's just that you're increasingly aware that you have to find your own meaning in life and that your choices now will directly affect everything that follows.

Age 25 I didn't feel like anything really mattered, I had time to fuck up. Now it feels like I have ten years to find something I consider worthwhile or I'll in all likelihood be permanently fucked.

@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

Fair point - but I think that by 2022 it was already fine where I was. I lived in a very touristic city at the time, so the period after I gained freedom of movement before the tourists returned was actually pretty nice as for once it felt like the city belonged to those who lived there.

I also very much felt during the pandemic that I was wasting one of the best years of my life. Still not complaining though - rather that than one of my more formative years.
