Strange: everyone knows that Airbnb contributes to unlivable inner cities and housing problems, and yet very few people decide not to rent Airbnb because of this.

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

@luccamerel It's just a symptom of housing restrictions, not the problem.

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

@luccamerel You're not addressing my point. The only reason AirBnb has that effect is because the market is restricted. It's like cyclists fighting to take away train rights-of-way because the drivers won't make the roads safe to ride bikes on.

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

@luccamerel And my broader point is this is not something "everyone knows." Some of us place the blame elsewhere and choose AirBnb because it's cheaper, or offers a more convenient location or a better layout for what we want.

I recently took a trip where the hotel choices were a really expensive hotel in the center of town, or relatively cheap motels out in the unwalkable strip malls. Meanwhile there were Airbnb rentals a short walk from downtown, in interesting neighborhoods with no hotels.

In NYC election news:

Justin Brannan, who is generally in favor of pedestrian and transit improvements, won over Ari Kagan, who is absolutely not, 58-41.

Marjorie Velazquez, who is usually pretty good on transportation but sponsored the underwhelming outdoor dining bill, lost to a pro-cop, anti-housing, anti-poor candidate, Kristy Marmorato, 47-52.

StreetsPAC didn't make endorsements in the general election this year, but here are Brannan and Kagan's answers to transportation questions that Ben Max asked them in October:

I need a form that enables people to upload & submit digital photos & write different captions for each one. The assumption is that the photos will not all depict the same thing. Have used Google Forms in the past but AFAIK there aren't custom metadata fields for each upload. Please chime in!

If I tell you I don't want your negativity in my mentions, that's not tone policing, it's tone self defense.

@roadskater Possibly. This is a pattern in transit discourse, but maybe it's particularly messed up this week for some reason!

@roadskater I've never seen that movie - had to google it! Is it any good? What's the context of the quote?

capntransit,
@capntransit@urbanists.social avatar

I don't know any other advocacy community where it's such common practice to respond to vision posts with "not gonna happen," "infeasible" and worse. It's absolutely toxic, and it seems pretty clear there's a connection between that pervasive negativity and the decreasing mode share of transit.

RT @marcus_ismael Freedom from parking tickets.

Freedom from paying for parking. Worrying about parking. Finding parking. Returning in time to said parking.

Freedom from monthly expenses in the hundreds and some times thousand+ dollars.

Freedom from wasting life away in traffic and smog.

Freedom is being able to viably choose between a bike, walk, ride, or transit to your destination

RT @jessiesingernyc It is no coincidence that the most common ways to die "by accident" are in cars, from guns, and from drugs, and these are only policy areas that feign ignorance to the safety science that every other industry subscribes to.

This is because if you die at work, the employer is financially responsible. If you die in a plane crash, the airline takes a financial hit.

If you die of an overdose, a shooting, or a crash, it costs drugmakers, gun manufacturers, and automakers nothing

RT @transalt We are devastated to learn that a 79-year-old woman was struck by multiple hit-and-run drivers & killed in Bed-Stuy last night.

We send our deepest condolences to her loved ones.

NYC has the tools to stop traffic violence, but lacks the political will to make our streets safe.
