Tulip Fest traffic on our street is extra fun this year because the construction project has been working on landscaping and has a ton of gravel and dirt that are all over the street so every time someone drives by and has to turn around at the dead end they cast even more dust onto our house.

Absolutely incredible coffee on the deck this morning under a cloudless sky and a pleasant breeze. All good things must come to an end, though. I left last night's dishes to this morning, and need to scoot to the Market for a paper, shoot a video for work. I've let Natalie know I'm available from 11:00 on for our first bike->ice cream of the season.

We went to the plant nursery last night and I went a bit ham on choosing shade-loving perennials for the section of our backyard that doesn't get much light.

Happily, they (Ritchies Windmill Lane) had Hellebores, which I was really really wanting, so I got a few of those that should look SUPER cool once they bloom (next year, bah).

I'm generally quite excited in general about the PWHL but today I saw a headline about how Boston is the first team to qualify for the Walter Cup and I wondered what that was named for...

... only to found out that it's named for Mark Walter, the male founder of the league and owner of all the teams. Gross, man.

They don't even have names for the teams yet, but the cup? Yup, named after some fucking billionaire.

Aww, the feeling when, after feeling anxious for a few days, you realize that you were worried for nothing.

Apparently, I can translate properly for the public accounts committee of the House 😆

@stephanie @Cassandra Hilariously, even people who work in Finance seem to rarely use the frigging French words for things. They nearly always just toss in the English! It's very silly.

Ooh, Neko Case is playing the Bronson Centre on September 26th. I saw her in Vancouver a couple of years ago and she was great. Which reminds me, another initiative that is going on over on The Bad Site but also TikTok is the Block List where people are blocking celebrities who haven't spoken out against genocide in Gaza. It's not so much of a thing over here on Mastodon, which is pretty much a group blocking of celebrities by design, but it's an interesting way to apply pressure.

I do wonder about what kind of ass kissing shitbirds the requirement that federal executives having to work four days a week in the office is going to attract.

For one, the most snivelling asskisser, old schoolers imagineable, only interested in furthering their careers (honestly not a huge change from many executives in some departments now)

It's also wildly white man favouring, since who else has the flexibility to be able to be in the office that often.

Today is Nakba Day, commemorating the forced mass displacement of Palestinians from their land by Israeli forces in 1948 and mostly not allowed to return to Palestine and living as permanent refugees. https://amnesty.ca/human-rights-news/nakba-day-mass-forced-displacement-in-gaza/

Israelis in illegal settlements are starting to say the quiet part out loud, commenting that they are ready to set up new settlements in Gaza now that they have largely displaced Palestinians, looking forward to beachfront properties. Fucking evil. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-68650815

This is a great explainer about life in Palestine under Israeli occupation.

This is about more than just a ceasefire in Israel's war on Gaza; it's about supporting permanent Palestinian liberation and the end of apartheid and illegal occupation by Israel. https://interactive.aljazeera.com/aje/2024/israel-occupation-illustrated-guide/

In the Occupied West Bank, Israel controls the amount of water given to Palestinians, giving them access to well below the UN recommend minimum amount while Israelis in illegal settlements have tons of water for their pools https://www.theguardian.com/world/2023/may/17/how-israel-uses-water-to-control-west-bank-palestine

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

Israel also works to even destroy Palestinians' ability to collect rainwater destroying centuries-old cisterns so they are forced to rely entirely on Israel for access to water for drinking and daily use. https://www.amnesty.org/en/latest/campaigns/2017/11/the-occupation-of-water/

@lanastewart Yup, that's what it was. I don't miss it.

Apparently there are now 355 bike racks in the parking garage and that project is completed. https://www.canada.ca/en/public-services-procurement/services/infrastructure-buildings/construction/terrasses-chaudiere-complex-renovating-modernizing.html

If anyone is trying to find a good source for recycled paper/post-consumer based toilet paper, @lanastewart found that Home Hardware stocks 48 packs of Cascades sold in a big cardboard box and while they are individually wrapped, they are wrapped in paper, which is likely also post-consumer. No plastic involved that I can tell, though I will pick up my order in the next couple of days and find out for sure. https://www.homehardware.ca/en/48-rolls-420-sheets-2-ply-toilet-tissue/p/4662815

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

My usual brand is the President's Choice green or whatever, but a) Loblaws and b) I resent that it's wrapped in plastic. I hope this is a viable replacement for it.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

Using virgin paper to make toilet paper is so frigging asinine to me. I just can't believe it's even legal to do. It's such a waste.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

For tissues, I mostly use handkerchiefs for regular daily purposes (I pick up pretty vintage ones when I go to vintage stores) but we also use Bonterra tissues. They're 100% post-consumer and totally plastic free. They sell them at Canadian Tire. https://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/bonterra-facial-tissue-3-ply-150-sheets-3-pk-1531726p.html

I wonder if there has been a time other than now when more of the NCC pathways along the Ottawa River (both sides) have had so many closures, other than during flooding and rehabilitation. It's kind of astounding how much of it is closed and detoured.

casseagull,
@casseagull@mstdn.social avatar

I was actually impressed with the current detour around the closure just west of the War Museum - they put a whole new little connector path in and reopened a part of the Preston extension to connect with the path by the LRT.

Step-daughter of a friend of ours saw the 11-yr old kid get killed in Rockland, by someone driving a school bus, while they were riding their bike. What the fuck…

I’ve said it a bunch of times but I completely changed the route we take to the kids school which is only 1.2 kms away. We take a ~ 2 km route to avoid the utter mayhem that takes over people during drop offs and pick ups, esp school bus and transport vans

casseagull,

@grivettcarnac Hey you love exercise, right? Because you ride a bike? You must LOVE the long way because exercise, right??? lol
