Why does sha256sum on my phone handle an 8GB file in 11 seconds and sha256sum on my laptop takes 17 seconds to do the same file? Hot cache in both cases, Pixel 7 (8GB of RAM) vs a i7-10510U with a Samsung 980 NVMe and 32GB of RAM on the laptop. Is Toybox's implementation better, or is Tensor just genuinely fast? Is UFS somehow faster than NVMe?

@mjg59 Phone is just googling the answer and getting lucky?

Oh how Duo giveth and how Duo taketh away.

@duolingo gave me three free Super Duolingo days and then made me translate this abhorrent sentence just two minutes later.

@PixelBandits When is anyone ever going to say that?!

Well that was fierce but I felt honour bound to take the opportunity to have a Dorset Naga based curry whilst actually being in Dorset.

It was lovely, very tasty but very hot.

We'll see how my ringpiece is in the morning! 🔥🚽

@llamasoft_ox I hope we won’t 😳

Hello, lovely people. The anti-trans mob are gearing up to start turning up in numbers at events and disrupt them. They turned up at Heaton Park yesterday and they've been at the Mole Valley one as well.

Might be worth speaking to your organisers to warn them! Info about why this is happening in the replies.

ceri,
@ceri@toot.wales avatar

@Stoat What are they doing? Placards, shouting, physical stuff?

ceri,
@ceri@toot.wales avatar

@Stoat noted, we will deal with that should they turn up. Awful.

    @SecurityWriter hmm can’t you do that too? Or have I just got fancier AirPods?

    @SecurityWriter I’ve got the Pro and I’m sure you can track the case but if they don’t fit then probably not a very compelling sales point!

    I swear that Apple AirDrop used to work over other mediums than BlueTooth+WiFi, i.e. connect two laptops together via thunderbolt and it'd just work. Instead I had to manually use nc and ifconfig to get the IP address to transfer it.

    But I did manage to get over 200MB/sec this way though (I did see over 300MB/sec, but I shouldn't have since at 20Gb/s, that'd be about 250MB/s max).

    (And a shasum -a 512 verified that the 11G file transferred correctly)

    @skinnylatte @encthenet another vote for tailscale. I am not a heavy files user so not sure if it will be quick enough for what you have in mind though.

    Vegetable trug has bombed this year, but raspberry bed and the vegetable junk yard are doing well under @ceri ‘s care

    @peeteepee @RHD thanks very much! I have very much gone for the “minimal effort” vibe in the areas I am responsible for, mainly as a result of the minimal effort expended.

    Another cool thing that happily coincides with my getting the E Ink tablet - just recently I went to cancel my decades long sub to New Scientist, largely because I tend to read on tabs/pads now and a physical copy seemed wasteful. Checking how much a digital sub was, it was still £230 a year odd.

    Then I came across a digital magazine subscription app that had NS and was only £10/mo, a lot cheaper.

    @llamasoft_ox Carmarthen library seem to have Libby for free which carries New Scientist (at least in Cardiff).
