Hi! I am looking to understand AI better on a technical level. Does anyone have explainers or other resources they'd recommend?

I'm a relatively senior software engineer, but have not worked in machine learning (or done any side projects with it) - ideally the resources are aimed at someone with my background but I am fine with learning some things I already know, or having to google a concept occasionally.

chanezon,

@shauna Microsoft AI learning and community hub has tutorials, articles and samples https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/ai/, I hope this helps.

Really cool paper from NVIDIA et al., iterating on LLM-generated rewards algorithms to teach robots in an in-silico simulation environment.

https://eureka-research.github.io/

From the paper conclusion: "The versatility and substantial performance gains of EUREKA suggest that the simple principle of combining large language models with evolutionary algorithms is a general and scalable approach to reward design, an insight that may be generally applicable to difficult, open-ended search problems."

Centaurs and Cyborgs, a nice metaphor for the different ways people leverage AI at work

I believe a manifesto should be short.

chanezon,

@TimPurdum eh eh I'm only speaking for myself :-)

Types are all you need!

A really cool project by Anders Hejlsberg et al. translating user intent in natural language to structured data using LLMs.

Personal news:

I decided to retire as a
Docker Captain for the time being

I truly love my fellow Captains and the Docker Crew which allowed me to be part of this wonderful community

I'll still be around as the Docker fanboy I am!

Second news, I'm still a
Microsoft MVP for the year ahead and will continue on taking as much Cloud Native projects and Linux Distros into WSL as possible!

For all the MVPs of 2024, congratulations!

chanezon,

@nunix Glad that you stay a Microsoft MVP!

OK, who can recommend a domain name registrar that:

  • Is boring and dependable and has a rock solid track record
  • Has a really good UI, including on mobile
  • Supports as many TLDs as possible
  • Isn't likely to get acquired by someone else
  • Ideally supports multiple payment methods as insurance against accidental card expiry

I'd settled on Google Domains... but they just sold themselves to Squarespace! https://9to5google.com/2023/06/15/google-domains-squarespace/

chanezon,

Been using since the 90s, never had an issue.

chanezon,

@faisal @simon oops, I had missed that! Thank you Faisal.

Here, I made you a Slack emoji for when you're talking about GenAI

chanezon,

@veronica ah ah this is great!
It also works for quantum computing conversations:-)
