I swear, I’m not going out there and starting to collect PowerPC G3 accelerators for beige Power Macintoshes.

Also, the ones Japanese companies like Interware comes up with interesting designs. Buffalo also made G3 accelerator cards too. Yes, the Macintosh is popular in Japan back in the day, especially the amount of games made for it.

Yes, it's the same company who made the G3 accelerator for the PowerBook 1400:

I have ordered a bunch of old Japanese language Maintosh games from Japan to play on the vintage Macs I have. They are relatively cheap.

I have a bunch of interesting titles, but I’ll reveal them eventually and they will eventually be archived and uploaded to Macintosh Garden for everyone to play (if you learning Japanese and interested in some of the obscure Japanese only games, it might be worth a try to mess around in an Emulator like Infinite Mac if you don’t have a Japanese version of Mac OS 7 or later installed)

AI developers are brazen stealing other peoples work without permission, hence this.

@yon The thing is, Japan allowed them to train on data so they can get OpenAI offices… LDP has the wrong priorities and don’t care about the creatives.

Everything back together now with G3 goodness

I did discover that three clips that hold the front broke off already, need to glue them back at a later date, but the 8100 is mostly restored and quieter now as it only runs off the BlueSCSI, the HD is disconnected, but causes a slight about 10 sec delay when it cold boots.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

While an 8100 is a first gen high end Power Macintosh, probably don't get one of these as they aren't easy to work on. It uses the same tower design as the Quadra 800, which is hard to upgrade the RAM or remove the battery (if it haven't exploded yet). The potential of broken plastics if you open it up or take parts out the wrong way is a concern.

If you ware looking for a Mac that can run Mac OS 7 (for compatibility with older games), 6100 or 7100 if you want a Power PC 601 or the 7300/7500/7600/8600/9600 are better bets.

I don't recommend a Performa 6200/6300 since those are really slow and not that great Macs, they are really slow, but you can use cheap CF cards, but there are no G3 upgrades for them, except for those rare cache card PowerPC G3 accelerator cards. 6360/6400/6500 are okay, but limited G3 accelerator options, and can only go up to 128 MB of RAM.

If you don't care about Mac OS 7 or need lower color modes, a G3 or G4 Power Mac towers or a G4 Mac mini with a modified Mac OS 9 install are still cheaper, which will always be faster, at the expense of compatibility with earlier apps that may only work on Mac OS 7 and not 8.5/8.6 or 9.

@yon I haven't really used a computer with a hard drive for a long while now. Most of my computers use SSDs (besides the NAS storage)

I wonder, will the BlueSCSI add an option for a motor to emulate hard drive sounds. :bunhdthink:

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon The WD Red Pro drives are really loud, I have two of them in the ThunderBay when the original RAID 10 array died in 2022, but I did have backups, so nothing got lost.

I wonder if BlueSCSI will ever add emulated drive sounds, for the nostalgia. They have it on the FloppyEmu making those floppy disk reading sounds.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon Yes, I have like 4 disk images and a folder that has a bunch of CD images. SCSI ID 3 is taken by the physical CD drive since I’m using an external one.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon I have like two SCSI devices, a ZIP drive and an external hard drive. Basically, it’s like Thunderbolt back in the day, surprised there was an external SCSI video card.

Sure, the whole Performa 6200 and the 630 being terrible because it uses an IDE HD instead of SCSI is a thing, although it can use CF cards without using a BlueSCSI. However, one can’t beat the connivence of dropping files on the SD card that the BlueSCSI uses and not having to deal with ISO mounting programs or physical CDs.

Should try to pick up a beige Mac of any type some time. They can do some things that the newer Power Macs can’t do such as play games that require BW/4/16 colours or greys.

All my upgrades work. Now to put everything back together tomorrow

The G3 accelerator is not the highest end only at 217 MHz, but it will be faster than a 100 MHz 601

Finally got the logic board out without breaking any plastics (knock on wood), and removed the old battery which haven’t gone off yet and upgraded the ram.

Need to figure out how to take the cache card out (so I can get video with the G3 accelerator) before testing everything before putting it back together

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon The middle two slots are the ROM chip and the Cache slot. I already pulled the cache, and going to test everything out of the case slot before putting everything back together.

The machine runs a lot quieter without the hard drive, although no video because the Cache card needs to be removed first since the accelerator has it's own L2 cache.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon That is the CPU on it's cooler. This video on the Power Macintosh 8100 explains how the cooler works, but it's not meant to be removed.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYWp_R33mDs&t=1245

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon Only used on the 100+ Mhz PowerPC 601 CPUs, which shows that it produces quite a bit of heat.. although the 603 barely have a heat sink as seen in the Performa 6200, the "worst Mac” and 604.

chikorita157, to random
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

I did get the Newer Tech G3 card installed, but no video. Looks like I do need to pull the cache card as I'm having the same issue of no video from the AV card.as seen in this video featuring the same G3 accelerator card.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWLI04q7-eY

The 8100 is pain in the neck though. Should have probably picked up a 8600 instead, if there was any reasonably priced and good shape. I’ll figure it out on Sunday, and probably get a bottle of plastic cement if I need to glue anything back.

There is an interrupt switch I need to pull out, before I can slide and drop them other board.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon There are others too, but there are a few that has yet to be archived.

But a good amount that are released on the Pippin, which most should work on Classic MacOS on PowerPC (not 68k).
