Little Snitch 6 seems to be released, maybe I’ll think about upgrading to it.

It’s basically a firewall that allows you to block IPs, useful in blocking trackers (including the :deadbird: site). I use it as a kill switch too when VPN is not activated.

@chikorita157 You were right, looks like the Snapdragon X Elite (stop using X, it’s been swastikad) is both fast and lasts longer (though since it’s actively cooled and I have no idea of what battery was used we’ll have to see about performance per watt).

Would be neat to have it in a Linux laptop. I don’t want an even worse Windows keyboard (the win and menu key was always moronic and inferior to meta, but it’s getting worse now!) though, and Windows with copilot+ is just incredibly super creepy. So maybe someone will finally build an actual Linux laptop with a sensible and useful keyboard.

I don’t even want to know what it’s reporting back on, but nothing you do on your computer would be even remotely a little bit private. That is creepy.

Apple better not be as dumb.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon From what I read, the single core performance is barely better than the M3 and the Snapdragon X is only using performance cores, but the M4 will probably beat whatever Qualcomm already have out already.

But I wonder if Framework will make a board with a Snapdragon X on it. If it catches on, will Valve switch to ARM. :bunhdthink:

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@anianimalsmoe @yon It’s not too surprising. It took like about two years for the M4 to get around the same multicore performance of a M2 Pro. Even my M1 Pro is still fast enough that I don’t need to update yet.

Yes, its going to need more innovation and work to get below 2nm.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon @anianimalsmoe Such a shame that PowerPC didn’t work out, although it lives on as “Power.” Those G5s or PowerPC 970 just use a lot of power and even the last of the Power Mac G5s used liquid cooled for those Quad Core G5s, which is ridiculous. It can warm a midsized town, like the current Core i9s and NVidia RTX 4090s with those ridiculous TDPs.

Still, it’s crazy how fast the G3 and G4s was back in the day and only using not as much power. Those were the time.

This is also why Intel Macs will never be as collectable as the 68K or even PowerPC Macs. They are too much like Wintel machines, but can run MacOS… just boring. Maybe the only one I will consider collecting is the trash can Mac Pro or the 2019 Mac Pro, although that one looks like the current Mac Pro.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon @anianimalsmoe My guess is that IBM wanted to focus the PowerPC on the HPC and server market, which is why they didn’t bother adding power management to the G5. Sad really, but not surprising.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon The M4s look nice, but I don’t think I need to upgrade my iPad Pro M1 yet, since I just bought a replacement keyboard since I pour tea accidentally on the last one. Buying another Magic Keyboard at $300 is another pill to shallow. Maybe I think about it in November, as the 2018 iPad Pro that I usually use for Gacha and reading Manga is really showing it’s age, and make the M1 do that role. Maybe there will be discount on the M4 by the Holiday season.

Linux on Apple Silicon is interesting, but it’s not really something I will daily drive, but something to tinker. I need an OS that works and Desktop Linux will never fulfill that role with the lack of commercial software support and the lack of ease of use, especially when things break.

If only BeOS was still around… that might be a good alternative than Desktop Linux. Oh well.

Maybe AMD should make their own ARM based APU.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon @anianimalsmoe Not to mention, Power based servers/workstations are expensive.

Maybe it’s due to low volume.

@yon @anianimalsmoe I guess people who use Linux that doesn’t want to use x86-64 or need to run AIX (IBM’s version of Unix, I used to use this for work up until my organization retired all the IBM P-series servers for Intel servers running Linux).

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon Is AIX going the way of Solaris?

BTW, Apple made a server product that runs on AIX in the 1990s, but surprisingly, it can’t even run Mac OS.

This is one of the problems with today’s tech as they are not as upgradable. Before 2012, most machines are not so upgradable. Also, the push to get the absolute latest, when the new features and performance are just minor.

Also the pain trying to find vintage Macs, especially since the ones in the 90s are just outrageously priced, although deals can still be found or if you willing to do repairs. Should of bought some more during the 2010s, although moving it might be a pain.

That said, I always keep my old devices as i might want to use them later on to tinker with, maybe not so much with some PC hardware as I don’t like Windows.

Just had one of those low level aha moments. I don’t have a TikTok account, I don’t have the app nor do I go to the web site.

So now I’m sure that if anyone is reading this they are thinking: “Yon, that’s an awfully long winded way to say you don’t watch any TikTok videos!”

Well, not true:) A crazy amount of TikToks are reposted as YouTube shorts.

@anianimalsmoe @yon Interesting, but I tend to avoid using Cloudflare for reasons, but we do use Object Storage from Linode.

chikorita157,
@chikorita157@sakurajima.moe avatar

@yon I think some hosts provide unlimited bandwidth, but since we used Object Storage, it’s metered. From I last checked, we use 570 GB of bandwidth for our buckets that hosts cached media for Mastodon and uploaded user content.
