There is a solution to this. Stop centralizing the internet.

If you want to take back control of the internet, we need to go back to blogging, using internet forums, and transition to the Fediverse with software that powers it like Mastodon, Calckey, Pixelfed, etc.

We need to stop making places like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Reddit, Tiktok, etc the center of the internet. At any time, they can pull the rug as seen with Twitter numerous times and Reddit charging outrageous fees for their API.

Using the Fediverse isn't that hard. Sure, onboarding could be better, but once one starts using it, they will get used to it. Also, is never the solution.

> Crunchyroll will not support Funimation's digital copy content. Funimation provided digital copies as part of some home video DVD or Blu-ray Disc purchases.

RIP digital copies. If you want them, don’t buy digital unless you can download anything without DRM attached. Always get physical copies of what you want to own.

Now, Fedi admins and mods can have a sigh of relief now that it’s finally over. :pokemonconfetti7:

🎉 Today, Sakurajima turns 6 months old

When Elon bought Twitter, I knew it's going downhill from here. I decided to create a Mastodon server for the Anime Blogging community, which has been fragmented, especialy with Aniblogger.net went away in the late 2010s. It's intended to serve as an inclusive, non-toxic Japanese media-centric creator community.

We have grown steadily in the 6 months, despite challenges, but we overcame them.

If you are the following:

  • Anime/Manga/Japanese Media Bloggers
  • Podcasts focus on Japanese Media
  • Anime-style artists
  • Japanese media video content creator
  • Write Japanese-media fanfiction/works
  • Fan of Japanese media

We invite you to join us at https://sakurajima.moe. You can migrate your followers too.

The “official” Misskey server will have 500k members soon, probably in little over a week, showing Misskey’s popularity in Japan.

If only Anime studios join Misskey instead, it will become more popular. After all, you have all the artists on there (and Threads tend to block a good number of Japanese servers, not making it viable to reach a Japanese audience).

Still, I don’t advise big servers, because the local timelines basically becomes useless.

From the Kuroneko spam attacks from the last two days shows that administrators should take cybersecurity seriously. As someone who works as a System Administrator in my day job and have two cybersecurity certifications, those who run their own services should make sure their server is secure. We have open signups, and of course none of these script kiddies can create accounts here because the temporary/disposable email domains are blocked.

Things such as…

  • Keeping the software up to date (including Mastodon/Misskey/Sharkey/etc)
  • Only open ports you only need
  • Only enable services that you need
  • Not allowing signups with temporary/disposable emails (they are easily abused by bad actors)
  • Blockling/limit signups from IP ranges where SPAM signups happen.
  • Keeping a good backup (Sakurajima not only backs up the database and the actual files, but also the virtual machines as well) and keeping copies off site. Also, testing them is a good idea.

There is some uproar about WordPress selling user data for training data for AI.

Note: WordPress.org, which you typically install on a host is unaffected. Only WordPress.com is affected as it has the opt out option for AI training.

Even if you have Jetpack installed on a self hosted WordPress.org install, it does not have this option to opt out. That is because it only affects WordPress.com blogs. Jetpack only transmit limited amount of data for its built in features and I doubt it will take your data for AI through the API used in Jetpack. Also, you are able to block AI companies from stealing your content by blocking the IP address.

If you are worried by this, self host your WordPress blog. Then you have full control and even block OpenAI and other AI companies from accessing your website.

Anyone looking for an small Japanese media fandom Pixelfed server who is on Sakurajima or Urusai can DM me. Since it's smaller and invite only, it will be better moderated. (must be a member at least for 30 days)

The Pixelfed server is https://usuzakuraya.us

Note that there are some quirks, as in the image preview not showing up immediately. Wait a few seconds, click the back and next button until the images appear.I'm still figuring out this issue.

@Arataka How you are doing banning all those spam bots. They are keeping our moderators busy.

Also, apparently, they are teenagers to proclaim themselves as the 荒らし共栄圏 (あらしきょうえいけん), or literally Trolling Prosperity Sphere.

Believe it or not, these Japanese TTS programs are pretty useful for listening practice, and surprisingly accurate due to advancements in TTS. Since there is a sale on them, it may be worth sharing my thoughts on which one is the best for those who need more listening practice or want to create content, in Japanese. Also, voice banks from well known Seiyuus as well.

I will be implementing some more security measures such as banning Tor Exit nodes from registering accounts from the web backend since that is what the script kiddies are using.

If you see any, continue to report them and our mods will take care of them.

For those who are thinking about jumping ship from Firefish to Sharkey, the official instructions to migrate your server from Firefish to Sharkey is now out.

The only reason we had to take more steps is because we were using the 1.0.4 beta build of Firefish. The Dev team is helpful if you run into any issues migrating. You should probably upgrade Firefish to 1.0.5 RC1 before migrating

There is a good number of things named after it, besides our servers, which includes:

  • The Volcano
  • A former neighborhood in Kagojima
  • A rail line in Osaka and a station
  • A character named Mai Sakurajima from Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai
  • A type of Japanese Radish (Sakurajima daikon radish)
  • A type of Japanese Orange (Sakurajima komikan orange)
  • A ferry that goes between Kagoshima Port and Sakurajima Port
  • A novella.

The more you know.

In a recent anime industry report, about half the industry workers work over 225 monthly hours.

About half of people in the Japanese anime industry said they work over 225 hours per month, highlighting the long working hours compared with other fields, a recent survey by an industry association showed.

The number greatly surpasses the full-time workers' average of 163.5 hours in the health ministry's survey for 2023, according to the Nippon Anime & Film Culture Association.

This is simply not sustainable and we know for a long time the working conditions in the Japanese animation industry is just bad.
