More than $29 billion was invested in generative AI companies last year, according to research firm PitchBook. One of the giants of cognitive psychology has shuffled off this mortal coil. Work so deeply influential that all cognitive scientists know it.

You can’t design anti-cheating mechanisms into a consensus protocol with an update cadence measured in years, when your cheaters have update cadences measured in hours.

@matthew_d_green something something trading in picoseconds versus hours...

For ML, open source must include training data, or it's not a useful distinction. The machine becomes the data.

Nice to see data lakes released...but what we need are data oceans. This new dataset is off by many orders of magnitude. Humans have a hard time with trillions...

In to advise the local community college, Laurel Ridge, on CS, ML, AI issues. In my view, the CC system has a hard time keeping up with the edge of tech. Over the last 5 years, we have accelerated their curriculum and hooked it into the Virginia state university system for seamless integration.

I don't believe we can filter our way out of drinking a polluted ocean of training data. https://www.techtarget.com/searchEnterpriseAI/news/366574580/Microsoft-hires-DeepMind-co-founder-amid-Google-Apple-news

"The issue is that [Google] trained up the [Gemini] foundation model on the polluted ocean and now they're trying to stop the pollution from getting out with a filter, and that doesn't work," he said. "These models were built by drinking a data ocean without cleaning it first. And we have to do better than that." And Microsoft has the same problem, he added.

@espadrine the data ocean is so big that we just don't know how to clean it (yet). Imagine trying to clean up tens of trillions of data points.

Insurance companies have a deep understanding of statistics and ML methods, but they don't yet understand how BIG big datasets are. Immense.

@seniorfrosk @cigitalgem it was called Reliable Software Technologies (rstcorp.com). We changed the name to cigital in 2001. 15 years later, we sold it to synopsys. It remains the main engine in the synopsys #swsec software integrity group which they are currently trying to sell.

cigitalgem,
@cigitalgem@sigmoid.social avatar

@seniorfrosk they are trying. The division makes something north of $850 million ARR. So the price will be in the billions. I think the margins are too low compared to the core EDA business which runs over 5 billion ARR

See https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/synopsys-posts-financial-results-for-fourth-quarter-and-fiscal-year-2022-301690554.html

cigitalgem,
@cigitalgem@sigmoid.social avatar

@seniorfrosk @cigitalgem no. Just a different kind of business. EDA is hitting a very hot streak due to chip demand driven by ML.
