I have been programming since I was 12 (born in '73 #genx), currently enjoy coding in #Rust. I use Linux every day; I prefer open to closed. I try to live and let live when it comes to people's tech choices.

I work in tech but am learning how better to separate that from my passion for programming.

I used to podcast, I plan to again soon.

I practice #zazen, #qigong, and #taichi every day.

I just spotted The Fifth Element on Hulu. A couple of weeks ago it wasn't available on anything we have. That was another Saturday where we simply wanted some pretty, dumb, and fun.

I guess my afternoon is sorted. Except maybe for a snack.

This movie always makes me think of Jodorowski, especially The Metabarons. I had a couple of issues years ago. I'm not sure if I still have them but might take a look for them later.

That was fun.

Hm, the 1968 Planet of the Apes? Why not? I watched Ebirah, Horror of the Deep last week. Besides, @kamikat practically dared me to press play.

Our bird feeder, that @kamikat set up recently, has been busy all morning.

I've noticed twice the big male cardinal hogging the prime perch. First there was a line of red fox sparrows trying to get a bite in edgewise then later this morning he was back with a couple chickadees darting in from the fence or nearby azalea.

Our neighbors hung a feeder this week too. @kamikat is more diligent about keeping ours full. There was an initial rush on the other feeder but they haven't refilled it yet.

I still see the finches checking theirs. We use safflower because the squirrels don't care for it. The finches must like whatever seed the neighbors used.

I have no complaints. I never saw a red fox sparrow until one visited our feeder. Now they are regulars and I think my favorites.

I am happy with how I spent my morning .

Turns out I don't mind working in the yard when it is gray.

I spent a little time in my office, taking care of household stuff before cleaning up.

I am working on lunch now. I forgot I was out of rice so it will be a little late. Then an errand and the rest of the afternoon for myself.

I finished mowing the lawn despite the persistent drizzle. My cursory research suggested most of the problems with mowing a wet lawn are mitigated by my use of an unpowered, reel mower. I set the blades at their highest. I only wanted to stop the tallest stalks from going to seed.

The forecast is for rain most of the week. Our lawn folks won't come until it has dried out. My rough cut should be good enough until then.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

I am content to toil with the mowing as needed. Everything in our backyard grows so much faster and fuller since we finished the renovation last yard. Taking down a couple of trees has let so much light in. We've had a few days this season when we worried the sun might be too much. A week of rain is welcome in the balance.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

@evoterra It isn't growing that fast, just faster then the front lawn and much faster than before the big dig. Our lawn folks haven't figured this out yet. I'm sure they will. Eventually.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

Rain rolled in overnight but I have yard work to do . The new lawn in back receives so much more sun the mowing schedule that the family run service keeps for the front isn't frequent enough. Before the next wave of rain rolls in I want to do a quick pass with the push mower I keep for exactly such situations.

Otherwise today is a good day to catch up on personal and household needfuls in my home office.

I got through the topics I wanted to delve into while reading and researching. I think the existing code is starting to click, that I have a good enough mental model of it. I followed up on a coworker's suggestion by looking into a couple more capabilities of our cloud provider. I remembered more about one and realized the other was simply service mesh.

I managed to get out in the sun a couple times today too.

Now my weekend starts.

A chat with a coworker yesterday helped me realize some possibilities for my first $dayjob project that will be far more feasible than other options ive been mulling. It may even be a bit of new learning and fun. And the end result will be far simpler than what we have now which I think is honestly the most important outcome.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

The weather is clear but crisp. Perfect excuse to start on the patio with tea.

No meetings today means more time for research and reading. I may do some of that out on the patio if the weather remains this nice.

TFW you start experiencing the desired effects of a daily well being practice, in this case my meditation, but it isn't what you expected. Equanimity doesn't necessarily also come with comfort, let alone contentment.

Good afternoon and TZAG, friends.

Started with another blood pressure check in with my doctor. Even though my reading was high, he seemed to gave credence to my home numbers and understand that this has been a stressful week, my very clear and newly developer white coat syndrome not withstanding.

His answer to a curiosity question threw me for a loop, so much so I don't care to share the specifics. Suffice to say I struggled to get traction after I got home from my appointment.

My morning was not great though things are much improved. I am taking a sun break before more $dayjob meetings.

I was trying to find a printable card or similar for my new insurance. I have a follow up tomorrow after a change to my BP medication. I spotted a mistake in my benefits that my monkey mind raced to assuming was unfixable. My enrollment period is open for another week and a half including changes even if I already submitted my enrollment or my coverage has started.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

I recognize why my first assumption was what it was. It starts with dire language about limited enrollment windows other than Qualifying Events of which I've had three in my life, all decades ago. Health insurance despite all the employer provided docs and assistance is overwhelming. I believe that is increasingly by design as it usually benefits the insurer.

If we can't have public healthcare, can we get dedicated public oversight and accountability for insurers?

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I am still feeling some unease for similar reasons to yesterday. I realized this morning that this presents a good opportunity to practice more skills for cultivating equanimity. I learned a couple new techniques while listening to one of my favorite podcasts this morning that I will try out.

The sun is still out so I also plan to take as much advantage as I can.

I managed to catch a little of the sun before it disappeared. I had a few minutes at the end of my lunch and was able to read about half an article before I had to come in from the deck for a meeting.

Some of my unease did stem from $dayjob questions, mostly around the current org change and my first project.

I was able to get some answers on the org change (which was shared transparently throughout the hiring process), at least enough for now. Feels like the kinds of growing pains I've encountered before. Happens with larger, older orgs too.

The other answers I got by finally getting some traction on some coding to evaluate a possible tool to help with my first project.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I am feeling a bit of unease . I haven't been able to identify any specific cause other than the world continuing to be as it is.

The sun is still shining though rain is in the forecast for tonight. I think I will spend a little more time in the sun today. I will think about other positive experiences I can cultivate. And I will continue trying out a new to me practice, of trying to substitute curiosity for anxiety.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I have had a busy morning already . I managed to get out for a run before work and had a check-in with my boss that was super helpful integrating everything I am learning, technical and otherwise, as preparation for my first project.

The sun is wonderful, had my first taste cleaning up after the dogs in the backyard and doing the inspection circuit of all the flower beds. I predict at least one sun break later today.
