I have been programming since I was 12 (born in '73 #genx), currently enjoy coding in #Rust. I use Linux every day; I prefer open to closed. I try to live and let live when it comes to people's tech choices.

I work in tech but am learning how better to separate that from my passion for programming.

I used to podcast, I plan to again soon.

I practice #zazen, #qigong, and #taichi every day.

I just filled out the @protonprivacy user survey after someone else mentioned it asked about AI and crypto. I made my feelings as a paying user known: please no AI or crypto but if you must, the default should be opt-in.

@protonprivacy Thank you for clarifying.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I am enjoying a slow, quiet morning . I am noodling on my laptop, listening to the rain and the birds out back at the feeder.

I think I will prioritize recharging today. I do have an idea for a simpler essay that I think I can distill from the one I've been working on for a few weeks. We'll see if I can find the appetite for some writing later.

I've taken care of my nonnegotiables: meditation, daily reader, and starting my journal entry for .

On with the rest of the agenda for the day. We both were thinking about relaxing so that's now the plan.

A rewatch of Battlestar Galactica it is. Perfect. I can play Hades II or explore on my laptop while we watch.

@grueproof We started doing the same, on a smaller scale, each week for the very same reason. @kamikat found these perfect trays for us, one typically holds two servings. Every other week or so, she plans a meal that will feed us on the night and let us put a few trays in the freezer. Favorites so far are shepherd's pie and manicotti.

We are watching Imaginary, another Blumhouse production. Hoping for at least better than Night Swim which we watched last Friday. Half hour in, not sure yet.

Forty minutes in, now we are getting to it. A not surprising twist then leaning with commitment into the full reveal. The clues were there from the start. Good cast, well made. Let's hope the setup pays off in the third act.

This movie is longer than we realized. Also didn't spot going in that it was PG-13. Actually has meant more intense emotional beats. Stopping because it is after our bed time. We'll watch the final act tomorrow.

Just finished Nikki Glaser's new special. https://m.imdb.com/title/tt32149504/?ref_=fn_al_tt_2 It's a lot but smart and authentic. I enjoyed it.

I pretty much live in vimwiki and tried out inlyne. I think it will work well for me, since I can do something like :!inlyne "%" &. Since it live updates, it works well as a live preview for whatever I am working on in that buffer.

I continue to enjoy the hell out of Hades II. It plays great on my Deck, even handheld, not only on the big screen.

It has been perfect for a run or two after I finish eating lunch, before returning to my office. And at the end of the day, to wind down before dinner.

I am currently able to beat the first boss maybe two out of five tries. I've unlocked more of the story though not the associated levels yet. I managed to beat the second boss once so far, though reached it a couple of times.

Despite the gray, it did not rain today. No evidence this morning it rained last night, either. The family that maintains our lawn made good use of almost two days of drier weather. The fescue is under control again, should fare better until the next dry spell.

The struggles I started with led to some good.

I practiced equanimity combined with other skills again. I handled "The Interrupt" better. That's a label I really like for the moment between a feeling and a reaction that I picked up from @grueproof. Our video call today was another good that came of meeting my struggle more skillfully.

To use another coinage I really like, this time from @kamikat: today was another day where I was "good but not happy or excited".

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

Still struggling a bit this morning but was able to use my "zen mind tricks" to manage my way through.

The sun has disappeared again but the rain hasn't returned yet. I got out for a run. I still don't enjoy the activity itself but love being in our nearby park. And definitely how finishing a decent run makes everything else feel a bit better.

I think I can get through the rest of in good order then very much will welcome the weekend.

I just successfully tested my theory that cultivating stronger equanimity would help me use any of the very many tools I've learned for handling and expressing strong feelings constructively. Makes the discomfort I've been feeling because of the equanimity easier to work through.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

So very tired of the rain. Looks to persist another week with few, brief sun breaks. Those hours of sun aren't enough to fully dry out our backyard or offer a chance to trim it properly. Mushrooms have been sprouting continuously from dying spots that are hidden by the ever longer grass. I am getting tired of plucking them, opening up those spots in the fescue, and trying to remove what mycelia I can.

This is all probably an apt metaphor, too tired to see it.

Reading the latest from @pluralistic and he puts his finger right on it as usual: "The aesthetic choices made by AI aren't choices, they're averages."

https://pluralistic.net/2024/05/13/spooky-action-at-a-close-up/

I'd go further and say anyone who thinks LLMs are more than spicy autocorrect likely doesn't understand what an average actually represents.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I woke up feeling more unease #today then promptly poured fuel on it by reviewing my social feed first thing. I've already done a little selectively temporary muting out of self defense. I may step away for the rest of the day, possibly longer, for the same reason.

I am at a stage cultivating my equanimity that often leaves me feeling like a raw nerve. I now rarely escalate yet haven't fully developed new, more healthy ways to cope.
