cmnybo,

I found a website that showed my how to use RSS feeds to automatically download TV shows. Having my favorite shows download automatically overnight was very convenient. There was no streaming services for TV shows back then and even if there was, my internet was way too slow for that. I had a portable media player with a massive 80GB hard drive that I could load my pirated TV shows and ripped DVDs on when I was away from home.

cmnybo,

A lot of people use Github because it’s easy to use and popular. Not everyone wants to self host, although it would be nice if the larger projects did. What I really hate is when open source projects use something like disord for support.

cmnybo,

And of course those expensive chargers will become bricks when the company goes out of business or just decides to stop supporting them.

cmnybo,

They can reduce the price as much as they want, but I still won’t pay for it until they get rid of the DRM.

cmnybo,

We need some that are fully open source software and hardware. I’m tired of all of the proprietary crap.

cmnybo,

You must live somewhere dry. I have to keep my filament in a box with silica gel.

cmnybo,

I prefer OSM since I can use the maps offline. Google maps is useless out in the middle of nowhere without any cell service.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

cmnybo,

This is worse than a streaming service dropping a show. They are removing the ability to play digital files that people purchased.

Microsoft is testing Game Pass ads on the Windows 11 Settings homepage (www.ghacks.net)

Microsoft’s announcement: “We are introducing a new Game Pass recommendation card on the Settings homepage. The Game Pass recommendation card on Settings Homepage will be shown to you if you actively play games on your PC. As a reminder – the Settings homepage will be shown only on the Home and Pro editions of Windows 11...

cmnybo,

You can install any Linux distro other than Ubuntu if you don’t want ads in your operating system.

cmnybo,

Batteries have separate C ratings for charge and discharge.

cmnybo,

4K bluray can be up to 144 mbps, so that’s reasonable.

cmnybo,

They could be made fairly small. The Curta calculator was hand held. Unfortunately, they are very expensive now, but there is a simulator online if you want to play with one.

cmnybo,

Most cloud providers have a way to set limits. Make sure you learn how to set appropriate limits to avoid unexpected bills.

cmnybo,

There are two ways to reduce piracy. Either make it easier to access content legally or make it harder to pirate. The former is significantly more effective than the latter. Taking down pirate streaming sites is a game of whack-a-mole and peer to peer won’t go anywhere.

cmnybo,

4K is nice for a large computer monitor if you want to replace a multi monitor setup with a single monitor. It needs to be 40+ inches, unfortunately there are not many monitors like that available.

cmnybo,

When the memory is shared with the GPU, bandwidth becomes much more important. A desktop will just use a dedicated GPU if it needs the performance.

cmnybo,

You have to enable compression in fstab.

[Resolved] After updating through both APT and the Software Store, I can't play mp4 videos with VLC anymore. The screen goes blank for a second or two then the audio starts playing without the video..

I’m using Debian 12, Ryzen 7 5700X processor, and Radeon HD 5450 graphics card. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling VLC but it didn’t resolve the issue. Here’s an excerpt from the VLC’s log file:...

cmnybo,

Did you happen to also update your video driver and not reboot?

cmnybo,

You will have to use wayland to run monitors at different refresh rates without tearing. You will also need wayland for HDR. It’s still not working perfectly yet, but there is a lot of work being put into it.

cmnybo,

I don’t care if it’s a human or a bot trying to sell me something because my ad blocker will make sure I don’t even see it.

cmnybo,

Batteries degrade with age too. It would probably have to be cycled 10 times a day to get that many cycles.

cmnybo,

Of course it doesn’t support band 71, which is the only 5G band I can get at home.

cmnybo,

I would recommend using btrfs on SSDs and ext4 on hard drives.

cmnybo,

Subvolumes are somewhat like a partition, but they don’t have fixed size. What they allow you to do is take snapshots. Snapshots are used to backup and restore the subvolume. They can be created instantly and don’t take up any space until something is changed.

cmnybo,

What distro? Some installers will set everything up for you and others you have to setup subvolumes manually.
