Speaking of, I'm supposed to be on my way to Boston right now. But the threw up at school, so.. yeah. Remember parents: never make plans.

Happily the Amtrak tickets were refundable.

Google why do you make me watch videos this way

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

@mcc i won't swear to it, but when I've seen this it is people who explicitly uploaded content with black letterboxes so that it would play in the shorts player, so the black bars are baked into the video and YouTube doesn't have a great way to know better.

But maybe that isn't the case here.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

@mcc yeah, fair enough. this particular thing ("why can't the player fix this?") is just the first layer of about 7 that are all directly caused by decisions YouTube had made :)

There are 295 people signed up for public comment at the Cambridge City Council tonight, most of whom will be speaking on a policy order to delay the city's implementation of bike lanes.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: "How many more people do you want to be hit, run over, injured, or killed?" Building these bike lanes is critical for cyclist safety.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: Just on my commute to work this morning, I had to navigate around 5 cars that were parked in the bike lane.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

"If there are protected lanes, it is far more likely that I, and seniors like me will leave the car at home in favor of riding a bike."

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: We know that road design that relies on road users following the rules all the time is not safe.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: My mom, a senior, has commented unprompted that the Garden St bike lane makes crossing the street safer. Also, due to protected bike lanes by Petsi Pies, I buy way more pies than I would otherwise.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: as a truck driver, it is scary to be driving a truck next to a bike. If someone doors a cyclist, you know that there's nothing that you can do, you're just going to crush them. I can't believe that we're considering delaying this for parking reasons.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

11 year old commenting at 9:10pm; "very scary to have cars pass too close and honk their horns at us." (It is also past his bedtime, and it sounds like he definitely needs to get more sleep.)

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Current speaker works in Cambridge; when he mentions he lives in Winchester, the jerks 2 rows behind me (who have been heckling many speakers) scoff audibly.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Genuinely big props to all the cyclist who have been seriously doored, broken bones, and are still daily bikers. I don't know what I'd do in that situation, but it's hard to imagine "getting back on the horse".

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

I've now situated myself directly in front of the hecklers, who seem to be objecting specifically to the idea that someone can ever leave the city of Cambridge and still have a right to speak about what happens in Cambridge.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker: I'm a driver and a cyclist. If I'm biking, I'm more likely to stop and buy something than I am if I'm driving by.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker #3 in opposition out of 205: I'm not comfortable biking, but most of the descriptions of incidents are at intersections, which are not made safer by bike lanes.

(this is a complete misunderstanding of what almost every cyclist describing an injury is describing: dooring is not gonna happen in an intersection!)

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

210: Lawrence Adkins, one of the hecklers. "We are not taking all stakeholders into account. I only found out about this tonight. We should go back to sending letters to residents, the digital world bothers me. This should be stopped, put it on hold, and do it right."

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

211: "Please don't equate bike lanes with increased pedestrian safety, that's not true."

[most are equating them with increased cyclist safety, which is certainly true, but pedestrian safety is also typically increased with most of these designs.]

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

the hecklers: "People are riding their kids across an intersection. Crazy."

(I'm curious how people are supposed to ride their kids somewhere that... doesn't have an intersection?)

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

speaker: I've moved to Malden, and my world is so much smaller than it was in when I lived in Cambridge. I can tell you about businesses I went to on safe bike routes, but not on Cambridge Street because I didn't feel safe biking there.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

speaker: I work with children with obesity, and it makes me feel sad when parents don't feel safe letting their children bike, but understands that it's an understandable decision given the safety of our streets.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

Speaker who rides a cargo bike with 2 kids: "Please choose a safer city."

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

"I'm here representing the 400 people who support this delay."

Lady, you have 400 signatures, we have 280 people who showed up in person or waited 5 hours to speak. I'm pretty sure it's clear which side has broader support.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

@bikepedantic @Will I think that accepting the fig leaf red herring of parking here is probably misstating it.

I would restate it as: The antis want to delay implementation of the remainder of the cycling safety ordinance, and they convinced the swing vote to side with them.

crschmidt,
@crschmidt@better.boston avatar

@20002ist @bikepedantic @Will Yeah; the 4 anti-bike people (who would like to just stop installing new bike lanes entirely) combined with the swing vote, who gave a 15 minute speech about how great it is that we have this world class ordinance with strict deadlines, so it's okay if we extend the deadlines and add more process.
