My neighbor (who hates bees, rabbits, coyotes, and all insects in her yard -- and has replaced their lawn with plastic) has a "Welcome Spring" sign up. 🤔

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@ai6yr Back when we lived in Boston (Somerville), we had some beehives in a friend's backyard. While we were inspecting the hives one day (using a smoker, but with a minimal amount of smoke; it was only 2 hives), a neighbor called the fire dept & police on us. Our friend had warned the neighbor about the hives (which were situated opposite the neighbor, with a flight path well away from the neighbor's yard), but the neighbor was upset because they didn't want any bees going into their yard. 🙄

MTA subway announcements are so funny. "Attention: if you have questions or need to report something, NYPD are available on the platform"

Like subway riders need overpaid power-tripping MAGA shitheads staffing an info booth. "Yes, hi, can you help me book a car to the airport?" "Fug off I'm playing candy crush"

Should there be ANY DOUBT left in any sane person's mind that NY governor Kathy Hochul is a closet racist?

Who, just who, fucking says something as abhorrent as "Black kids in the Bronx do not know the word ‘computer’"?

Who?

This, is a supposed Democrat?

@obeto @IveyJanette I predicted that he'd be indicted in his first year. Sadly, I was wrong, but I'm still hoping we don't have to wait out the full 4 years..

Andres4NY, (edited )
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@IveyJanette @JimRI @obeto Disagree. The media focused almost exclusively on Andrew Yang in the primary, to the exclusion of the other candidates. It was only towards the end of the race that they focused on other candidates when it became clear Yang wasn't even remotely capable of winning, and suddenly other candidates had scandal after scandal which shook things up. Morales was a progressive favorite, but union busting & her staff basically quitting en masse had voters looking elsewhere.

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@IveyJanette @JimRI @obeto Stringer was another progressive favorite, but he had a sex abuse scandal. Wiley was kind of the backup, as she was a lawyer in de Blasio's admin and everyone was sick of BdB. But at the end, something like only 4% of NYC's population voted in the primary, and Adams (who had name recognition from his time as Brooklyn Borough President and whose scandals hadn't really exploded yet other than the "is he living in NJ" thing) won even in the first rankings.

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@IveyJanette @JimRI @obeto So basically even if it hadn't been ranked-choice voting, if everyone had just voted for their favorite candidate in a traditional race, Adams still would've had the most votes. Sadly.

EDIT: and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2021_New_York_City_mayoral_election#Democratic_primary shows Yang's polling; Jan - May, he led in the polls so that's where the media focus was. It wasn't until early May that they finally really focused on other candidates.

@signaleleven @kev Yeah, we use WP Fastest Cache (free version) and it works really well; most page requests to our site don't even hit php, they're served from a cache by nginx. But that also falls into the sysadmin realm, as it requires configuring things on the nginx side.

Two large fuzzy bees fly out of a hole in a crawlspace vent... what does this mean? A big nest? I thought the round fuzzy buzzers were solitary ground-nesting types. Is this a mating pair or some colony?

Andres4NY,
@Andres4NY@social.ridetrans.it avatar

@enobacon Is it a bumble bee? They usually nest in the ground, but will nest elsewhere if convenient. I had a Seattle friend who had them nesting above a door of a garage. They live in colonies, but like smaller ones. Not like thousands of (honey)bees, more like tens.

I noticed this Mercedes using the bus lane to bypass cars at a red light. Suspicious, I looked up the plate on & found that the driver has OVER ONE HUNDRED FIFTEEN CAMERA VIOLATIONS IN NEW YORK CITY. I thought of @ashok thread on using tech to alert people of risky drivers...

Driver is likely committing insurance fraud by having the car registered in PA. And they've paid almost $7k in fines so far, having decided that doing whatever they want is worth the price.

Screenshot of the How's My Driving NY website showing lookup for Pennsylvania plate LFV 0188. The car currently has 118 violations, with a total fine amount of $10,655.30, of which $2,300.72 has been reduced, and the driver has paid $6,900.58.
