Hi, I'm Dan.

Australian guy in my late 30's,

Recently learned that I'm #Autistic, #ADHD, #PDA, #Aphantasia, #Anauralia ...
Learning all about it has become a hyper-focus, I'm finally starting to actually understand my life and self.

Music is a current passion, hoping to keep this one longer!
I've been playing bass for two years,
in a band for the past year,
loving every minute of it.

Previous passions:

  • Photography (when my son was born)
  • IT / networking (which became my profession)

dan,

@yourautisticlife @actuallyautistic I identify with the type of Autism, which I think is a big part of why advertising never works on me.
And, if I actually want to buy a thing, I've already impulsively researched the hell out of it, talked myself into needing it, and bought it before I ever saw the ad!

I tend to now ignore self designated gatekeepers of autistic people because some of them haven't been kind/empathetic/compassionate with folks like me who are high functioning, have masked our autism throughout childhood into adulthood & never got diagnosed until after age 40. Those gatekeepers told me that I'm 'fake autistic' because I'll talk to random ppl & can maintain some eye contact.

We're not all the same, even if we may share autism in common.

dan,

@pippa @msquebanh Not just women, I can say the same about myself too. I only found out this year at age 39. I didn't even know that I had ADHD until a few years ago, after someone suggested it may explain some things about my son

dan,

@doggle @actuallyadhd @actuallyautistic Wow that's such an encouraging read. I had no idea that some places actively try to recruit ND folk. It's refreshing.

At work we often have trouble hiring people who actually are as good as they appeared to be in the interview.
I find myself thinking "if only they would look for Autistic people, they might not have as much trouble".
But nobody there knows I'm Autistic (and I'm not ready for that yet) so I just watch from the sidelines...

dan, to ADHD

post? Hi, I'm Dan.
I don't generally do social media. And yet here I am. Trying out this Fedi thing,
excited to have a space where I can just be myself.

I'm recently self diagnosed , , , & officially (39yo, better late than never!)
It's been so enlightening to finally start learning and embracing who I really am.

Meeting other autistic people has been amazing and is helping me feel less alone.

So um hi 🙂

dan,

@chelonaute @ratcatcher @actuallyautistic I find it a bit overwhelming too, but in a different way - I often hesitate to mention the group in posts, I think it makes me a bit anxious to know that my post will go out to so many people and I second guess whether anyone even wants to hear anything I have to say. It's easier to post to a smaller group.

I do follow the group though as it's been a good way to discover new people that I might want to follow.

dan,

@ratcatcher @chelonaute @actuallyautistic @otheorange_tag @pussreboots @UnCoveredMyths When I was still on Mastodon, I really liked the Fedilab client

dan,

@crashglasshouses @actuallyautistic @ratcatcher @UnCoveredMyths @chelonaute @otheorange_tag @pussreboots Hmm, your comment peaked my interest, so I did a quick search for more info and found this: https://www.reddit.com/r/Mastodon/comments/ex3res/fediverse_spotlight_3_fedilab/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=1

I think your understanding may be a little off the mark. My understanding was that the software is not made by Nazis, the problem people have is that people can use the software to log into a nazi run instance called Gab (ie their app doesn't block Gab) It's similar to how you can use the Chrome web browser to view Gab's website - it doesn't mean the people who develop Chrome are Nazis.

(This isn't an invitation for arguing, as I really have no skin in this fight at all. I don't even use the software any more since switching from Mastodon to Firefish. I'm just passing on the info that I found)

dan,

@pussreboots @actuallyautistic @ratcatcher @UnCoveredMyths @crashglasshouses @chelonaute @otheorange_tag Fedi is opt-in. Only you can take yourself off a thread. Exactly how you do that depends on the features of whatever app you're using 🙂

dan,

@eric @actuallyautistic @ratcatcher @UnCoveredMyths @crashglasshouses @chelonaute @otheorange_tag Do people actually do that? I just hit the reply button when I'm continuing a conversation thread. I thought everyone just hits the reply button.

dan,

@crashglasshouses @actuallyautistic @ratcatcher @UnCoveredMyths @chelonaute @otheorange_tag My understanding is that "blocking instances" is done by the instances and/or the users on the instances they choose to use, not by the client application. It's one of the main points of Fedi - that moderation is decentralised
