Tried dying some heavy linen canvas this week. The dye was named "ivy green", but I wanted something lighter than the sample on the box. On the left is the result I got with only about half the recommended amount of dye (about 100 g with 600 g of fabric), and was astonished how dark it still was! 🤯
So for the second run on the right I only used one teaspoon with another 600 g of canvas. And the water in the washing machine was still dark as night…

I finally found a good offer for a hand-cranked grinder on the local classifieds. The seller didn't know the model, but the "Ixion" logo was still recognizable to me – an old German make, probably from the 1930s, that usually goes for twice the asking price… 🙂

It only needed a bit of light clean up with soap and a wire brush. The insides were still good as new, but the screw hole holding the hand crank tight needed a small reminder that it once was an M5 thread…

Everything disassembled on the workbench, next to screw drivers, wrenches, latex gloves, a bowl of soapy water and a tooth brush.
The cover of the machine case has been opened, and two well-oiled sets of transmission gears can be seen between the hand crank shaft and the grinding wheel shaft.
The machine body is held in a vice, and the screw hole in the crank shaft is being recut with a hand-held thread cutter.

Der Ast blockiert den Gehweg hinter einem Schild, dass den Betrachter darüber informiert, dass auf diesem Weg kein Winterdienst und Benutzung auf eigene Gefahr ist. Der Ast und alle seine kleineren Verästelungen mit grünem Laub sind schon grob mit einer Motorsäge aufgeteilt worden, und die Umgebung ist mit Flatterband abgesperrt.
Aus unerklärlichen Umständen liegt ein etwa 50 cm langes und im Durchmesser etwa 15 cm messendes Stück einer Astgabel auf dem Gepäckträger eines Fahrrades. Niemand weiß, wie das da hingekommen ist, es muss von selbst dorthin geklettert sein, denn wer würde denn einfach so Holz mitnehmen, wenn er schon ganz viel davon im Keller hat, was er eh niemals im Leben verbrauchen wird?!?

Turns out: shellac mixed with some pigment makes a fairly usable marker fluid for #metalworking.
(I only had black pigment at hand, but it works equally well as the blue stuff. The ingredients were all already lying around in the shop, and I didn't want to spend the 25€ for a small bottle of the commercial stuff and wait for delivery 😉)

I was annoyed that the IKEA #KNAGGLIG crates fit into #IVAR shelves perfectly in depth, but not in width, so of course I had to fix this with a quick #woodworking job. Luckily (?) the sides are only attached with pin nails, which I could even reuse, but I also added some glue just to be on the safe side 😉

Two wooden crates next to each other on an 80 cm wide IVAR shelf. The left crate is shorter in width than the right one, but together they now fill the width, the height, and the depth of the shelf space exactly. The shelf above them holds colorful books.
