People keep recommending Ted Chiang. But I don't want short stories (Murderbot somehow managed to be an exception). The longer the better.

While his stuff is shorter, it’s very thought provoking and sticks with you. If you haven’t read the longer ones, I recommend them.

Why don't favorites & boosts federate from Mastodon on microblogs?

I've noticed that when I'm browsing microblogs on Kbin, I see very few favorites (upvotes) on posts even when there are tons when you look at them from Mastodon. For example, this post doesn't seem to have any favorites, but look at it from Mastodon, and you see over 120. In general, federation with Mastodon is really...

In addition to the previous information, as a side note, it is possible for non-Kbin and non-Lemmy content to be automatically routed to a Magazine via tags and show up as a Thread if the content is federated as a Page. One example is WriteFreely blog posts. Frendica can also do this but I’m not sure on the details.

I don't know if you've had a chance to see the FAQ in the magazine kbinfaqs@kilioa.org but I recommend checking those out.

Disclosure: I wrote those a few weeks ago during the initial flood to kbin.

I know this is the wrong time to ask, but can anyone recommend a fediverse instance for a long-running local (Manchester UK) sci-fi virtual book club? (a few posts a month I'd expect)

Thanks...

Boosts welcome.

@steely_glint

I actually think a Mobilizon instance might be useful. Yes, the UI isn't the most customizable, but it does federate and people with Mobilizon accounts can interact pretty deeply with any Mobilizon group you make.

https://joinmobilizon.org/en/And this instance focused on groups and events in the UK:

https://rendezvous.nomagic.uk/

You could create a group there (you need a Mobilizon account to manage and administer the group, but Mastodon/etc can follow the "group account" (not your Mobilizon one) to get posts and events sent to their timeline.

Any thoughts on Pixelfed support for image/video hosting in kbin?

It seems that the developer for Pixelfed is creating a kbin app. Any thoughts on integrating upload/hosting support for pixelfed into posts here? I haven't seen anyone else mention it, but it seems like integrating between other open source and decentralized ActivityPub software might help adoption of the fediverse overall.

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@McBinary

I run a personal Pixelfed instance as well as a kbin one. I think the "easiest" or most sustainable would be if there was a pixelfed instance also stood up at the same time a new kbin instance is started which had some kind of SSO for the kbin and pixelfed instance.

The challenges I see with this:

  1. Media storage space for a place like Kbin.social could grow pretty fast, especially if people really started uploading videos.
  2. Bandwidth concerns may or may not be an issue, but certainly would need to be carefully considered.
  3. Moderating the pixelfed side could be a lot of work, especially if people start only using the pixelfed site and not posting anything to kbin. It becomes like Imgur and moderating images, especially when people are uploading non-OC constantly, adds greatly to the work-load.

I've done a little testing to see how embedding/linking to images on a pixelfed instance would work (without any special integration) and it works.

Can't find certain communities and users in search

I'm trying to search for otherkin@pawb.social and maia@crimew.gay so that I can follow them, but neither comes up when I use the searchbar. For the community, I know kbin.social is federated with pawb.social because other communities from there do come up in search. I've tried searching for both using name@domain, @name@domain,...

There seems to be some intermittent federation issues at times it seems. You could raise an issue and see if someone can check the kbin.social server side.

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@RainbowsAre they protected by any kind of bot protections? If so that could interfere.

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@Pixelologist

I haven't seen one yet, but that doesn't mean there isn't one hiding out there.

I also know that not as many of the Twitch streaming group has made the jump to the Fediverse due to reach, existing audiences on Twitter or Instagram because posts only show up chronologically to direct followers.

With that said, while Lemmy and Kbin are great for what they do, perhaps something more like a Calckey instance would be helpful since it allows for more ways to keep and organize information you want to refer to. I use it a lot and the ability to keep information together as well as find new information as it passes my way for something like Streaming has been more valuable and useful for me.

I'll let the head dev for Calckey describe it:

Good luck either way!

Any suggestions for PS5 multiplayer games?

As the title says, I'm curious to know what are the best games to play online with friends on the PS5. My friends and I play Apex, but some are starting to get burnt out so we're looking for alternatives (that aren't fortnite, OW2 or Destiny 2). It feels like good multiplayer games are a bit limited. We tried Deep Rock Galactic...

I updated my FAQ in kbinfaqs@kilioa.org with more clarification on following magazines from microblogging platforms like Mastodon or Calckey.

It’s more an issue with the microblogging platforms.

When I go to any federated community it shows Ernest as the owner even if it's from another instance. Is this a bug?

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@Xathonn

It's not a bug. I'm pretty sure it has to do with something about magazines must have an owner. Remote communities aren't "created" on the local instance but instead "synced up" and so it uses the admin account as the owner of the newly created magazine.

Remote magazines can be created on the local instance even without someone explicitly searching for it (I believe since that what seems to have happened on my instance) so I believe it just assigns the owner to the admin.

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@ppptan

Correct. The post was associated with the magazine/community. It was created on kbin inside a magazine so it was associated with the magazine in the same way a Mastodon user could insert the community address in the Mastodon post and have their post show up in the Lemmy instance in the Community area.

What Kbin is doing differently is that it's accepting posts from the wider fediverse which was created on platforms "unaware" of communities or magazines. Lemmy ignores those unless they contain specific community addresses, but kbin doesn't and instead routes those based on hashtags or to the "random" magazine. You can see in the "random" magazine tons of microblog posts which don't seem to be related to anything or stand-alone posts.

boffinbox, to science

@jerry hi, i noticed that i cannot "add" new magazines from kbin.social

specifically, when i try to add @RedditMigration, it does nothing, despite it existing at https://kbin.social/m/RedditMigration.
i checked a second one, using @BuyItForLife, also nothing

i checked this wasn't an issue with all instances by adding @science, which worked first try.
i wanted to ask if you reckon this is an issue with kbin.social, or with fedia.io? thanks :)

dannekrose,

I suspect it is because kbin.social has DDos protections enabled. That has been preventing federation into and out of kbin.social.

A small FAQ to hopefully help new users to kbin (kilioa.org)

I wanted to post this here since I want to help as much as I can in my own way to people coming here for the first time. I hope it is useful and helpful! I tried to assume low knowledge with the Fediverse in my responses which I collected here from a different post and assembled into a single article....

I'll be the first to admit that I actually wasn't much of a Reddit user. What I do is turn on my notifications and then check for new comments in the notification menu. I'm not sure that will get you exactly what you want, but hopefully it will be a start.

If you haven't, notification settings are in the Settings menu you can see when you click on your user name in the top bar. It's in the first tab, General at the bottom.

Thanks for the write-up. I've been using Mastodon quite a bit the last few months, and I'm curious about how kbin interoperates with that with from a user perspective.

What happens if you you follow a kbin user from Mastodon? Do you see just their "posts" or also their replies to threads? Do you see when they post an article? Can a kbin user follow a Mastodon user?

Yes to all of these to the best of my testing!

How do hashtags interact between the two systems?

Hashtags are a good question for sure. It depends on a few factors as best I can tell.

  1. If the content was created outside kbin and federated in from a non-kbin instance (Calckey, Mastodon, etc) the microblog post will be routed to a magazine. Magazines can be configured to “listen” for certain hashtags by the owner. If an incoming post has the hashtag, that post will be added to that magazine’s microblog section. If a magazine doesn’t match the hashtag, the post will be added to the magazine called “random” that each kbin instance has as a “catch-all” for incoming content that doesn’t fit elsewhere. A l

Note: There is still much I don’t know about the exact logic used to route these posts to magazines. “How does it decide where to add the post to when there are multiple hashtags which each match separate magazines?” for example.

  1. If the content is created on kbin and sent to followers from kbin, it behaves more or less like any other post with hashtags.

What happens if you follow a kbin magazine from Mastodon? I noticed that they appear with a "Group" tag on Mastodon if searching for that "user".

Actually from what I can tell, not much. Unlike gup.pe, magazine accounts don’t boost all the content that gets created in the Magazine. The magazine accounts always shows as zero posts and replies for me.

(Edit: I could navigate to this post from Mastodon and reply to it, but it didn't show up here yet. But maybe that's due to the temporarily broken federation.)

I believe so. My instance doesn’t seem to have issues with federation very much right down as an example

dannekrose,
@dannekrose@kilioa.org avatar

@ch1cken
I don't know the specifics of kbin. With that said, having spent time trying to understand how "likes/favorites/stars" work between some other non-kbin and non-lemmy platforms, I think the issue is with how likes federate. Likes are pushed, not pulled. When someone "likes/favorites/stars" something, that gets pushed to all the instances that that person follows. It only happens once and the "home server/instance" that created and pushed the content in the first place doesn't repeat the incoming "like/favorite/star" activity back out. That means that unless the person who clicked "like" also happens to be connected directly to everyone else that got the initial post, only the people who got the initial post AND happen to be connected to the person (on a different server. This doesn't apply when it's all on the same server) will see the like show up on the post.
