I think I would be okay with 8-10 year iterations. 3-4 years is a ridiculous money grab. I haven't owned an XBOX since the 360 though, so...

Admin of my instance seems to have gone inactive, looking to migrate to a small instance with an active admin (kbin.cafe)

I’d like to help out with decentralization, with users not all gathering in one place, so I don’t want to go to kbin.social or fedia.io. I did look at fedidb.org and the list of instances there, but it doesn’t tell me if the admin is active. I could just visit every instance listed there and check the admin’s profile for...

It could be a secondary account, but I would guess that it's the one they currently belong to? @kbin.cafe

I just finished the 4th and last available book in the Bobiverse series Heaven's River. This one is quite a bit different as it focuses more on diverging/drifting personality differences of the replicants. I'd still recommend it though, it feels like a natural progression from where the story began.

I also read through The Three-Body Problem by Cixin Liu (translated). This one was very different than your typical sci-fi. Very political, conspiratorial, and at times very dry. In the end I very much enjoyed the story, but it felt like 2 disparate plot lines that didn't really coalesce. It was also the second book I've read in the last month that didn't resolve any of the main story conflict in the first book and requires reading the next book to get closure... Not a fan of that sort of ending.

I felt the same way about the Bobiverse books, they read so easily and so quickly! Same with the Murderbot books, actually. I think Artificial Condition was my favorite so far. 'Art' was such a great addition to the story overall.

Interesting. I'm adding Wool to my read list, but just realized there is a TV show starting for that series too. :)

I made the mistake of watching the TV show for Altered Carbon first, and I absolutely loved the show so much that I can't dissociate the TV show from the book. I had a really hard time reading the book because of that. I kept just wanting to watch the show again - and so I never finished it.

If you haven't seen the show on Netflix, I highly recommend it.

There would be a lot fewer old people by the end of the month... (ICU Nurse)

Agreed, stepping down is a bit heavy handed. There are a lot of moving parts, it's okay to take time for your self and let others take up the reigns temporarily if you need to. I've seen quite a lot of merges on the core recently - so it's obvious things are moving in the right direction.

I'm still reading through the 4th and final book in the Bobiverse series Heaven's River. This one is quite a bit different as it focuses more on the personality of the main character and forces some self-reflection on 'him' and his clones. I'm finding it harder to finish than the last few - but still entertaining.

I also finished Exit Strategy by Martha Wells. These books are just really fast and fun. I can't recommend the Murderbot series enough.

Not really, though. Rigid structure helps with ADHD, but only when someone else is enforcing the structure. Prepubescent kids with ADHD aren't typically capable of maintaining their own structure. They aren't neurotypical, it's more than distraction and energy, they have a functioning issue. They can't tune out all the stimulus that normal brains do, and because of it they miss a lot of social cues that help with development.

My son has ADHD and no amount of reorienting our family environment would help him - he could (and has) literally be in a bare concrete room with nothing but his thoughts and get distracted and slam his hands together making exploding/punching sounds for hours, where a typical kid would get bored in seconds.

I've been out of town for the last 4 days, so I didn't get much reading in. I did finish reading All These Worlds by Dennis Taylor however. I've also read about 50% through the 4th and final book in the series Heaven's River. This one is quite a bit different as it focuses more on the personality of the main character and forces some self-reflection on 'him' and his clones.

I was also able to finish listening to:
[Audio] The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams, narrated by Martin Freeman. It ended so abruptly, and didn't really seem to have an overall plot, it just sort of meandered until the auther was like 'Alright, I'mma head out'... I'm not sure I liked this one, honestly. There was a lot of abruptly stopping the story progression to examine some random topic in detail.

Oof, I just read a few reviews for that one. It seems that many people agree with that sentiment. Thanks for sharing!

Interesting, artist turned author?! How is his writing?

I just added both of those to my reading list. They look interesting. Which would you recommend I start with?

There is an extension called "Social Fixer" that brings back the sort by new and allows you to filter out all the 'sponsored' and 'suggested' bullshit. It's not being actively updated anymore, but it still works fine.

It's ridiculous that I can pay for MLB TV and the ONLY game I'm unable to watch is my local team...

I finished For We Are Many by Dennis Taylor - and about halfway through All These Worlds by Dennis Taylor. This is the third book in the series, and third I'm reading in 3 weeks - they are so much fun. The most enjoyable reads I've been through in a while!

I also just added Fall of Hyperion by Dan Simmons to my kindle today. I'm really hoping for some closure from this book. I was really put-off by the complete lack of any resolution in the last book - just one big lead up.

[Audio] The Restaurant at the End of the Universe by Douglas Adams, narrated by Martin Freeman. I've read Hitchhikers Guide several times but have never continued the series. I'm not sure why, but I'm having a bit of trouble focusing on this audiobook. Maybe because it seem to be a lot of random explanations about unnecessary things...

To add to this; because of how federation works, having an account on artemis.camp gets you access to the same content using the app.

kbin.social has been unusably slow lately?

The front page seems to work alright most of the time but when I try to load any thread it either loads so slowly(sometimes like 30+ seconds) that I end up closing the page or I get hit with a Error 50x page that has been saying "Over the next few days, there will be a change in server infrastructure." for a long time....

Yeah, I'm still seeing this bug when trying to post a thread or a picture post. "Link" posting seems to work alright though, but I can't post any other type of content... It's been this way for about a month. I'm sort of losing interest since I can't really post threads - I can only comment.

Blocking any domain seems to make certain stuff disappear

I moderate @mcsuggestions, and today, I noticed that my comments on the two most recent threads didn't show up when I was logged in. After some experimentation, I figured out that whenever I had any domain blocked, all comments on those threads disappeared. From what I can tell in this magazine, others are experiencing the same...

I don't think @ actually pings a notification to users. He does respond to direct messages sometimes though.

This was totally the answer - it appears having any instance blocked at all is causing threads to be filtered out of view, even my own. Unblocking all domains fixes the issue for me and there are a LOT more recent posts than I was seeing previously.
