A chaotic good web designer trying to not piss off the Internet. System design & open source https://hachyderm.io/@xata. Alum of Elastic and Giantbomb. Kermit the Frog is my model in life.

I captured 17,000 screenshots as a designer since 2010. I've published more than half of them publicly on my website.

Introducing the museum! 😅 Built with @xata, Google Vision APIs and an Astro/Svelte front-end.

If I could describe Mastodon... It's like a social club filled with all the people you should have spent more time with in high school, but we're too distracted at the time to pay attention to.

Look, I miss peak Internet, but this smaller subset of the authentic nerd core of that larger world works. It's sort of what I grew up around.

I'm going to be really bummed when Reddit drops its 3rd party apps. It will hit me harder than Twitter. Discord is so bloated and really isn't an alternative.

I'm one of the first children of the Internet, and I sort of grew up in online communities. There's nothing good about what's happening right now. The collaboration and hackery of the web through APIs is a big reason why it works and why I've loved it.

A non-customizable web bums me out.

Getting pretty excited about this spec for a selectlist addition to HTML. This will remove a lot of uneeded JavaScript to most web apps. Popovers and menus will get a lot easier.

You need to have fun with ChatGPT sometimes. Using it has really helped bridge the gap in my engineering knowledge. I was able to write some decent watcher scripts for my linux system that silently sync files to GCP and @xata

By the end of the weekend I hope to have all 13 years of my screenshot library available on my site in a browsable timeline. New files will sync up immediately.

I also want to build some stats / charts from it using Xata's aggregation layer.

Changed up the onboarding in @xata . I always think it's weird when evaluating a new DB system (or any tech) and they expect you to go through an hour of reading docs and learning SDKs just to see how it works. We now give people a full codebase alongside the db so you can play around.

Some people don't like this method of learning, and you still have the more traditional option for them. Even further. Who needs the stuff? Just skip it. Some people hate onboarding. Give users choice.

Some commands to set up the sample project.

Traffic slowed on the bridge near the Naval Academy... what is this about?... then heard a loud sound. Took a quick picture from my (of course) pickup truck. 🇺🇸

Watching Friedkin's Sorcerer for the first time. I've watched Wages of Fear many times before and know its beats. This is the rare remake that adds to the story while sticking to the tenants of the first film. It feels like a horror film closer to the tension / vibe of Apocalypse Now.

Rooms three through six in my Ker Nethalas run complete. I like doing one room a night and only giving myself 10 minutes for the sketch.

Having more fun then I expected playing an RPG by myself. It feels like a manual Wizardry game.

Who says you can't play RPGs by yourself! Room one of my Ker Nethalas dungeon delve. Gonna draw a monster for each room.

@bss Yeah for me it's just an excuse for doodle prompts! Ker Nethalas is pretty grim and has a sanity check so it fits ballpoint scraw style!

Watching Go (1999). Watched this one a dozen times in my early 20s. Don't miss a pre-cowboy Timothy Olyphant.

My kids are 9 and 11. They've been interested in Dungeons and Dragons indirectly through me for years. I was worried it was a little too rule heavy for them, and instead started them on a Game Book (basically a choose your own adventure with state) called Legendary Kingdoms. It's meant to be single player, but you control four characters. I narrate.

We've had the best time playing through the story. Highly recommend as an intro to deeper gameplay for young kids.

Pretty impressive bit of teamwork in yesterday's Orioles game.

In this play, the third baseball (Westburg) purposefully slides to give the Shortstop (Henderson) room to throw.

Filled out some more panels on my Ker Nethalas dungeon run over the weekend. Feel I'm getting a little better at doodling. Found my first rare item, a mastery amulet.

MLB is so funny. I pay a decent chunk of change for a Flex plan for Orioles tickets (live). I pay for MLB TV. They blackout the games because I'm local and they want me paying for cable. I pay for a VPN to get around it. But MLB still has one game a day exclusive on Apple TV. I don't need that, so I'll just watch a pirate stream.

The money I'm paying to get around this bullshit id happily pay directly to them, bypassing all this middle man shit.

Makes zero sense. Miss the days of antennas.

Punted my wife twice last night, because I dreamed a different Greek God was trying to kill me every time I fell asleep.

Versed + Fentanyl does wild things.

And I guess I'm basically Kratos.

@RxBrad I woke up last week with a violent physical jump after Hulk Hogan suplexed me in a dream. No drugs, just grew up in the 80s and he's there floating in my psyche.

Does anyone have any good tutorials for Pico8 / Tic-80 aimed at kids? I need to elevate my kids past scratch and think thisight be a good fit?
