Traveling for tomorrow. Bringing some robots and handhelds with me. Catch me if you want to see them and/or talk about Python on microcontrollers.

The option to disable a feature should be implemented before the feature.

What if there was a university-developed, EU-sponsored, open source reference implementation of an operating system for consumer devices, and all consumer devices sold in EU had to be compatible with it, in addition to optionally having their own operating system, developed by the manufacturer?

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@mansr The reference implementation would suck for sure, but what about all the other implementations it would enable?

if you're a phone manufacturer, you're actually legally required to also manufacture your own fine-but-a-bit-expensive wireless earbuds. they don't want you to know this but it's true

@xodium @jacqueline So Moondrop is a galactic criminal with their Miad 01 phone?

When I was a kid I read the entire MSDOS manual that came with my dad's Amstrad PC1512.

These days I don't even get to the bottom of a single man page 😬

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@jamescooke The green book? It was awesome, I remember it had a whole chapter explaining how scrollbars work.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@jamescooke I see, I was thinking about the manual that came with the computer.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@jamescooke My Amstrad PC 1512 came with MS DOS 3.2 and Digital Research DOS Plus, on colorful diskettes, so that MS DOS 4.0 was probably a separate purchase?

If you really can't stop progress, then that means we can prioritize other things, like safety, general well-being, or preservation of natural resources, because the progress will happen anyways.

Just curious - of folks who follow me here on Mastodon, what is your desktop of choice? KDE Plasma, GNOME, Mate, Cinnamon, Cosmic, Xfce, other?

(Tried a poll, but apparently Mastodon only allows 4 options? That's woefully insufficient.)

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@jzb xfce, but highly customized

Ramdom thought: Proper grammer used to be important to prove that you was educated, but maybe its best to avoid it to prove that your not AI.

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@dabeaz Please think about the non-native speakers, though. Mangled grammar is all fun and games, and you can easily grasp the meaning if you have experience with the language and the common mistakes people make, but it's absolute hell for people trying to translate it, either by hand or automatically. Add spelling mistakes, so that the words can't be looked up in a dictionary, and you have successfully excluded a large portion of the world's population.

Has anyone used assembly service with some components skipped? Does the paste still get applied to those pads, or does JLC remove those openings from the stencil? If not, I can do it myself, just curious 🙂

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@arturo182 There is an option for that on the first page. It costs a bit extra to have the paste applied.

  • How will I know this is it? That this is the one and only?
  • You make a decision.
  • And if I'm wrong? What then?
  • Then you try again.
  • How many tries do I get?
  • As many as you need.
  • That doesn't seem fair.
  • It's not a game.

Dear , I don't want to see shorts ever. If I selected a short, that was a mistake. It means I'm currently swearing at your abysmal UI, frantically trying to make some inane babble fuck off before inevitably giving up and killing the entire app.

new kubernetes video game idea, Taints Row

i'll see my self out...

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@elmiko You know, what? That would actually explain a lot!

If it's supposed to be a game, there is no point in making it easy or practical. You just have to learn by trial and error the patterns you need to advance to the next level, just like in Lost Souls or something. They don't have to make sense or serve a purpose, it's the process of figuring it out that's important.

Thank you, that covers a lot of technical decisions that were baffling to me!

deshipu,
@deshipu@fosstodon.org avatar

@elmiko That's what you get for letting engineers do what they want. They were bored, so they made the world's most expensive puzzle.
