I took my side-project too seriously and ended up with the biggest analysis of title drops in movies:

@hugovk After doing this I need a break before doing anything similar I'm afraid 😄

But thanks for finding the problems with Psycho, will fix them asap!

@hugovk Hadn't heard of that, that's fantastic 😆

@nhoizey Yes, I had to make some tough decisions when it came to what constitutes a title drop and what not... in 'It's case I was aware that characters probably tend to mean the third person pronoun and not the clown but I decided to stick to the rules as I had defined them. And who knows - maybe Stephen King was actually talking about the pronoun the whole time 😉

@seblammers Amazing, thanks so much for letting me know! Just added the links so everyone can bask in the glory that is 'E' (2006) and 'I' (2015) 😄

Loved the GodotConference, and while hanging out in the chat, saw this and I can’t stop thinking about it.

Thinking of all past conferences and people I met:

@Migueldeicaza This being a German saying it can - of course - also have a slightly more sinister undertone: "We see each other at least twice in a lifetime - once on your way up and once on your way down" 😉

If you're looking for a really neat Mastodon-client (that incidentally makes things look like Twitter, you know, for the withdrawal symptoms and all): https://elk.zone

In this time of social media upheaval the siren song of the personal blog is getting louder and louder.

Still, one must resist the temptation of digging up that old Wordpress password and writing the 'Promise To Post More' post - that inevitable, lonely, embarrassing capstone of every personal blog.

One recent lesson: just because something seems like an old hat to you, it might still blow the minds of people who have never encountered it.

Basically, try to keep your beginner's mind when it comes to technology: what you found fascinating/useful/cool when starting out will feel the same way to people without your background.

I guess we're done with dataviz:

A plot of all objects in the universe - nothing to add.

@seblammers this time it's 'Red Plenty' by Francis Spufford. Such a weird/fascinating one :D

@seblammers Thanks for recommendation, I'll check it out!

While I'm working on those translations, I guess I'll post some lessons learned (for next time 🤦‍♂️):

  1. Never ever display any text that came directly from the data. Always have ids and map those to entries in a translation file which can be easily swapped out for a different language.

  2. As for numbers: only use them for your visualization. If you need to show them, run them through a locale-aware component first that does necessary adjustments (e.g., 1.23$ would be "1,23$" in German).

Working on the Arabic translation of the SDG Atlas 2023 and I adore the aesthetics without understanding a single word 😄

@wahlatlas We're still investigating if that change is necessary since it would be a big development effort. But yes, that might still change...

dominikus,
@dominikus@vis.social avatar

@felixbernoully @maarten You're right that time should go from right-to-left as well. Given the amount of charts in the Atlas and the required engineering effort to change it, however, we're still investigating how important it is for our audience before making that leap.

But if you'd created all those charts from scratch RTL would be the way to go.
