Finished my root system experiment. Made by starting with a full thread, splitting into 2, then again into 3. Decided to add a second grey layer under the white to give it some depth. Pretty happy with this. :)

This is an excellent story by alvin chang about the impact of adverse childhood experiences.

After introducing the main character, Alex, the simulation has both a marker and an animation delay to help you keep track of the him throughout the story.

Very nicely done:

Are you ok, Mike?

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

Yeah, I figured sth. like that. It was a bit cryptic, leaving room for imagining all sorts of scenarios. I hope you're better now :)

mikebrondbjerg, to crossstitch
@mikebrondbjerg@vis.social avatar

Rare that these experiments come out "just right", but I'm really happy with the #hitomezashi stitching here. The #crossstitch material keeping me neat. Next, to add another colour and see if i can work around that inner circle... I realise I seem to be accidentally making an elaborate death star, but that wasn't the idea! 😅

Does anyone have any tips for resources that discuss how to 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗰 𝘀𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗰𝗼𝗱𝗲? (for dataviz, esp. in D3)

I am interested in creating shapes like leaves, waves, sea shells, bushes, etc. programmatically. I've seen stuff for Illustrator but not for code.

Thanks 🙏

Du Bois Data Visualization Society Challenge - Week 7/10: My recreation of Du Bois' poster no.47, done with D3 & Svelte. Again I tried to recreate it as close to the original as possible, make it responsive and added a pattern fill to match the hand-painted look.

It's my birthday today (🥳) and I got a brilliant A4 press by @pookipresses. I love it. Did a very quick test print of these little particle polaroids and they are already 100% better than doing them by hand. Still need to master inking & pressure, but very promising!! #pookieclub #pookiepresses #linocut

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@mikebrondbjerg

First of all: Happy birthday Mike! I hope you'll have a lovely day and a great new year in your life ahead!

Second of all: that press looks terrific and I'm very much looking forward to seeing what you'll create with it :)

New project! We examine 30 years of Rolling Stone’s “Greatest Albums of All Time” rankings https://pudding.cool/2024/03/greatest-music/

@thepudding

Bravo, love how you managed to create a feeling of consistency between the layout shifts via transitioning the matching elements.

And it's very cool to see that new generations of judges bring in a new generation of "greatest albums".

I took my side-project too seriously and ended up with the biggest analysis of title drops in movies:

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@dominikus

I went through the piece a second time (still amazing) and stumbled across two dead/undefined links in the sentence "movies like E or I", where both movies are "undefined". Just in case you feel like going back into codebase just once more 😜

In the last few days I finally took the time to finish a small project that I started and never finished. It is called "Wie viel wasser?". You can find it here: https://xyz.francescamorini.com/wie-viel-wasser/

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@framoriniii

I really like this idea and the way you visualized it!

Makes me realize that some of my favorite lakes are actually smaller than I thought. With the notably exception of the Wannsee (the big one), which is just massive!

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@framoriniii

FYI, this plot that you made for the yearly water measurements shows up like this for me, where my systems preferences (dark mode) are honored, but the labels get very hard to read, e.g. the years on the x-axis and some of the annotations.

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@framoriniii

Oh, I just noticed that the flow chart (?) about the water cycle, etc. is completely gone. Like the stealth labels, but here all the elements are affected.

Other than that, everything looks great in dark-mode! On the main page everything seems to work just fine :)

@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@framoriniii

Good weekend of work. 6x9 set of d4 dice generated numbers translated into 54x3cm red triangles. The 216x1.5cm black triangles are the same d4 numbers set symmetrically over the red pattern.

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@mikebrondbjerg

Grrrrrrrreat outcome Mike! I'm totally hooked on these triangle combinations!

I just found out that one of my old interactives published at Zeit Online in 2013 is still working in the web archive! It was the culmination of my passion for timelines and data visualization, and sooo much research went into this, as we were showing data for 22 years of German governments. So happy that this is preserved, I thought it was lost forever.

2013? That's crazy! Like digging out a stoneage axe that is still sharp. Surely feels good to see you built sth. solid that lasts even as technologies rapidly evolve.

I really like that you always put the original and the recreation side by side.

The only drawback I see is that it's not really viewable on my mobile.

Maybe you can consider doing some adjustments so that the layout switches for mobile?

seblammers,
@seblammers@vis.social avatar

@kristin_baumann

It's looking great on mobile now! Really love the style and your modern adaptation of it.

And you already added another challenge! Great stuff. Thanks for sharing all this!

Happy to share that starting in May, I'll be joining @juliustroeger and his amazing team at @zeitonline as Senior Visual Data Journalist. Very excited to getting my hands back on journalism.

Of course, my ❤️ still belongs to @datawrapper and I will continue to be part of it (I'm staying on 1d/week) in a more background/advisory role.

This one took a bit of work, but really like the quilting feel of it. Took my earlier and added half size stippled black triangles. Rotation of the stippled triangles also set by the roll of a d4.

Wow, this was well worth the work you put in! Even more fascinating than your earlier linocut.

Why might an SVG shape rotate weirdly?

What is an annulus sector?

What happens when you apply an SVG attribute rotation and a CSS style rotation at the same time?

Where did that D3 arc go?!

All your hypothetical questions have been answered!
