I genuinely don't understand why I enjoy Bethesda games so much when they are so fundamentally janky

Cops can force suspect to unlock phone with thumbprint, US court rules

Ruling: Thumbprint scan is like a "blood draw or fingerprint taken at booking."

@arstechnica I thought this was already settled law. The gov't (edit: specifically US) can't force you to give up knowledge, but they can force you to give up physical things (bank accounts, property, blood tests, etc.)

Every once in a while, I think about going to work in the game industry.

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@danluu Speaking as a former game industry QA person, QA are generally treated pretty shitty but this is an all time low

Anyone know of a visual diff tool that lets you ignore specific lines or changes in a line? I'm looking for a nice way to remove noise from big diffs across tags in a repo

Can anyone think of a web platform API that accepts a string or array of strings as an argument?

I thought for sure this was a thing, but I'm drawing blanks

EDIT: Answered! https://hachyderm.io/@evilpie/112260613777599323

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@evilpie Ohh, keypath! Thanks, now it's time to check the WebIDL for how that's defined

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@lamplightdev Nah, that method has a variadic argument. I was looking for cases where the argument is basically a union type

Turns out createIndex on IndexedDB does what I was looking for: https://hachyderm.io/@evilpie/112260613777599323

I either need to find a product designer to work with on side projects or get a lot better at making UI that looks and feels as good as I expect my daily tools to be

Are there any other blogs I’m missing to keep up-to-date with web extension development?

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@samclintock I would say mine, but I haven't posted in almost a year. I'm hoping to do a write up of the recent CWS policy changes soon

Edit: oh, and I'm also (very slowly) working on a podcast

I know I have a bit of a schtick, but I'm genuinely excited about how this could be used in https://v8.dev/blog/sandbox

heydon, to random
@heydon@front-end.social avatar

I would like to join @ellyloel in willing the term "web designer" back into existence. Personally, I hate how "frontend developer" became a thing and suddenly someone else was responsible for design. "You can code? You're a developer, put the typography and the colors down!" People can do more than one thing sometimes. Not always.

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@heydon @ellyloel I thought the title "web designer" got subsumed by "ux designer"

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@heydon @ellyloel Interesting. I think my lines are a little different. I think of "web designer" as the UI, UX, writing parts and optionally CSS/HTML vs. "web developer" which is more frontend & backend code implementation stuff that optionally touches on designing UI from scratch

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@Meyerweb @heydon @ellyloel TBH the huge scope of "webmater" is part of what put me off pursuing it as a career early on. The day I found out that there was a job that was just working on HTML, CSS, and JS called "front end engineer" is the day I completely changed my career path

Does Google even consider selling off the apps they kill or do they just enjoy making people unhappy?

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@tbodt Saw someone cursing out Google Podcasts. But there are too many potential matches at this point

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@tbodt "acquired by" or "transitioning to"?

The complaint I've seen is that people like the Google Podcasts product. Moving that userbase to something different made by the parent company isn't quite the same

dotproto,
@dotproto@toot.cafe avatar

@tbodt The difference is the experience of the people using those pieces of software. As I see it an acquisition keeps the same product but changes the owner whereas a transition moves the userbase from one product to another
