Which sci-fi titles (movies, books) do you consider comforting, cozy, something you come back to from time to time? For me, I guess it is The Matrix. Still holds up to this day, gets better with every re-watch, and gives me a sense of peace when I need it.
The books Walkaway (Cory Doctorow) and Accelerando (Charles Stross) both give me nostalgia for a time when the future seemed like an exciting challenge instead of an unbearable one.
Hi everyone, this community is helping me a lot in starting my journey into the self-hosting world. I’m currently just experimenting using my main pc as server, but I’m planning getting an old minipc and let it running 24h....
This might be a stupid question, but I’m only so-so at wireguard. Do you experience that kind of loss using WG at home, on wifi, between your phone and server?
I have a really bad habit held over from The Place that Must Not be Named of subscribing to everything that looks interesting. If it isn’t actually active or interesting, it gets unsubscribed. Is there a way to sort my list here to see which communities are active?
I think they want that for the communities tab. In other words, not to see posts sorted by active, but communities sorted by average monthly users or something. Not sure how to do it though.
I hate this comparison. I’ve seen it so many times in the last four years or so, but I feel like it always adds more confusion. I don’t think most people know how email servers work. I run a server and have messed with Postfix, and I don’t have a good grasp on it myself. I’m not sure how to improve it but there has to be something better than that.
The standards on residential water heater efficiency, which are required by Congress, have not been updated in 13 years. Water heating is responsible for roughly 13% of both annual residential energy use and consumer utility costs, the DOE said.

I really disagree re: email. Proton’s web interface is fine, but if you’re going to use a desktop client, and many people prefer to, I think thunderbird is a better choice than outlook. Further, having a personal domain for email is great if you ever want to switch providers. It’s pretty much the only way to not have to email dozens of people telling them “Sorry, you won’t be able to reach me at this address anymore.” If you do any sort of business over email encrypting it is a good choice, because it is possible to both spoof email and to intercept and read it.
You’re doing it when protonmail goes out of business suddenly, or changes their privacy rules, or decides they want to raise prices and you don’t want to pay. You can never really predict these things, and having a cheap (domain names can be like $15 a year) option is great.

I have a samsung A52 and I locked myself out misinputting my pin repeatedly while exhausted. It let me try again after ten minutes or so of lockout. If it helps, there is an fdroid app called “coffee” which will keep the screen on permanently until you manually turn it off.

I don't believe it's possible to reform anything purely online. At some point you have to organize with your neighbors. Maybe try finding a local group, or local chapter of a national group and get involved with them. The DSA could be a good starting point, at least to help you meet other people with similar beliefs.
I've been using it mainly as a way of keeping track of what I read. I guess I could use a text file, but it's nice to be able to see it from my phone or share it.
I don't think that's really possible. I saw what happened when twitter users started trying Mastodon. There was a ton of confusion, and almost none of it was about terminology. The confusion was stuff like "Why doesn't search work like Twitter's" or "I can't see this person's posts". Trying to dumb it down only works when the details don't really matter.
