It's a nice, sunny day, I'm driving to the countryside, it's a perfect opportunity to shoot some film, and as expected, I'm carrying way too many cameras and lenses with me - because too much is not enough? 😅
Let's just hope I'll finish at least one roll of film!

Traditionally, my family, non-practicing believers and atheists, always celebrated New Year's more than Christmas, and I'm continuing the tradition - if nothing else, it's an opportunity to unpack presents twice in a week! 🥰

Regardless of anything, happy New Year everyone! 🥳

I changed my legal name when I came to America because I don’t need anyone to pronounce my other name. Even Mandarin speakers can’t. Frankly, names are not as sacred or one dimensional as monolingual English speakers believe.

My Chinese name is pronounced completely differently in: Teochew (Chiu Chow, the original), Cantonese, Mandarin, Korean, Vietnamese; and in every other language where you can put a sound to a Chinese character. My real name is only reserved for family (and hospitals)

@yaohsi @skinnylatte Dan is quite a strange name for a Croatian, was it maybe Danijel? We Croatians usually follow standard first name-last name practice, middle names are not common, but having two first names (e.g. Ana Marija) or last names (mostly married women keeping their maiden last name) is nothing strange. But, we have those weird letters we like to use, and letter combinations that are very hard to pronounce (e.g. Hrvoje - h as in helium, sharp r, j is similar to y in "you"). 😅

Back in September, I tested Praktica PLC2, a camera that's been sitting on a shelf for who-knows-how-long. Everything looked and sounded just fine, but the film turned out empty like no photos were ever taken.

There were a few explanations, the most plausible being the camera didn't catch and wind the film, and I concluded I'd have to test the camera again.

And, I did that a few weeks ago… [🧵 1/6]

After running another roll of film a few weeks ago, I still have no solid explanation for what happened the first time.

This time I got a few photos exhibiting some defects, but also a few photos with absolutely no problems at all! I was metering with TTArtisan light meter, I used two lenses, and a custom, short roll of film - 15 frames total. [🧵 2/6]

The first and the second photos on the roll are indicating the shutter isn't working as it should - the top half is just empty. But that makes sense, the camera has not been used for quite some time, and the shutter lubrication was stiff and dusty.

Then, suddenly, the next four consecutive photos are looking as good as it gets, with no issues at all. That's a bit unexpected, but it still makes sense, the shutter's been working a bit, and the lubrication is not so stiff anymore. Cool.

All of a sudden, the next three photos are like this, with the top quarter empty. The shutter is obviously no longer working as it should. Weird.

And finally, the last six photos look like this - the top half is empty! Ugh.😬

@srfirehorseart @ifixcoinops Thanks! That's a scruffy camera that's been sitting neglected for probably more than a decade, I wanted to check if it's even working. It looks, sounds and feels like it is, but after getting the first roll out of it completely empty, I started to doubt. I'm still not sure what went wrong, back in September. 😅

Happy holidays, people!
I've managed to take a camera out of a bag and take a walk, here's the entrance to Trsat Castle in Rijeka, Croatia. The whole place is literally wrapped in tiny lights, it looks amazing, but it's full of people, and it's hard to take a good-looking photo quickly.

Do I need everything here for a day, day-and-a-half of vacation? Probably not, maybe I can switch to a smaller bag somehow...

Ok, no need for two film cameras, MZ-S can do a mid-roll change; I can live without 17mm ultra-wide and 100mm tele on a film - that's one camera and three lenses less, not a bad reduction!
Here's my setup for the next two days: Pentax MZ-S, 24/2.8 and 50/1.4; Canon 5Dmk2, 50/1.4, a compact 24-70mm and Mamiya 150/4 lenses. Kodak Ektachrome 320T and Ilford XP2 Super films. Should be enough and (almost) everything fits into a smallish bag, yay!

@Huginn87OG I've got Pentax FA28-70mm F4 - no match for the mighty Tamron, but it's reasonably sharp on a film and very compact. Although, it's f/4, too slow for anything except daytime. 😅

Follow up on this. I managed to use both cameras, only one lens on a film camera (50/1.4, on the camera in the photo above) for a total of two (2) photos of dubious quality; I tried to use all three lenses on a digital camera, but it was way too dark for any sensible photos with anything except 50/1.4 (again, on the camera in the photo above).
One (1) digital photo (linked) ended up on Flickr's Explore page. Not bad at all! :)

A quick question for the #believeInFilm community - Ilford HP5+ in Rodinal or FX-39? 🤔
I've never used FX-39 to develop a film faster than 200 ASA, all ideas are welcome!
#selfDev #filmdevelopment

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@jejune I was thinking about developing one roll in my go-to Rodinal 1+50 and the other on in FX-39, but I've just realized I already have both rolls in the same tank, so yeah, I'd say I won't be able to do that comparison. On the other hand, FX-30 should do its job just fine, how bad can it be!?😅

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

A quick follow-up for the future reference: I've used FX-39 and got good results. To me, the film looks slightly less sharp than I'd expect from Rodinal, but it also looks slightly less grainy. A fair trade!

I've made my dumb heater a bit less dumb! Now I can control it through wifi, yay! The next step - automating it.

I've added a Sonoff Mini wifi switch, added a mechanical toggle as an emergency backup, and rewired the bottom part of the heater, I needed a bit more room. Easy!

(Check the indicator LED and spinning fan when it's turned on)

A generic small home fan/heater unit standing on the kitchen counter turning on and off without physical interaction. It's controlled through a wifi smart-home switch installed internally, retrofitted today.

@LaurentB45 @skinnylatte Yup, the same, I've had that sudden death happen.
Just last week I've had a few sessions of reusing the hell out of a litre of XT-3, I've managed to develop 14 rolls total.

I'm not a film photography purist, I do use my digital camera for things like: event photography and bird photography. Nobody has the time or money to have thousands of shots of those things on film.

It helps, also, to have a digital camera you don't hate. Personally I never loved my Canon DSLRs in the past; but really enjoy my Nikons.

Here's a photo of a banana slug from Pacifica.

I always have a small film camera for a 'B roll', tho.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@skinnylatte On the other hand, a full-frame Nikon Z camera is probably the best digital camera at the moment. While the Nikkor Z mount lens selection is generally okayish, it is comically bad if you have a strong dislike for big lenses - there are only 4 not-huge lenses, and of those, 3 are optically pretty weak.

But - you can adapt a lot of AF DSLR lenses (Canon EF, Minolta A, Pentax K, but not Nikon AF/AF-D, yet) and Sony FE mirrorless lenses, and keep the AF working.

I've been thinking about the Ilford's announcement the next week, and I've realized I'd be happier with Kentmere films in APS format than with the return of Ilfocolor.
Sure, color negative film is nice but realistically, there's no way it would be under 8€ (in my local retail stores), and if it's over that, it'll fall in Two-Rolls-Per-Year category (and I'd rather shoot slide film, then!), and APS film would make all those small APS cameras usable again. 🤔
#believeInFilm #bringBackCheapColorFilm

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

[A month later] Harman Phoenix 200, Ilford's colour film arrived, it's not available in APS format, and it's double the price I feared - it goes for 16€. That's just a bit cheaper than the Kodak Portra 160 and more expensive than the Adox Color Mission 200, Wolfen NC500, Kodak ProImage 100, Kodak UltraMax 400…

That's the price of developing a new color film, two decades after the consumer market went digital. 😵

At least, black & white film is aplenty, and (still) priced for everyday use.
