Ya know what I haven't done for quite some time? A live film-developing thread! The last time I did one was in August, and I developed 40 rolls in the meantime! ๐Ÿ˜

So, let's start - first, let me gather all the stuff I need...

I need a photo to use on my dors/cluc talk submission. The one I have on my profile is pushing 10 years and I risk people not recognizing me from the photo. Maybe I should just scare people off with a selfie.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@ihabunek hahaha, sure, why not!
I remember when I took your current photo like it's been yesterday and I reject it's been that long ago!

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@merlinrebrovic @ihabunek That was a decade ago! ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
I would never have guessed, but on the other hand, if you asked me what year was three years ago, I'd tell you 2017 or maybe 2018! ๐Ÿ˜…

I bought a couple of job lots of gear yesterday - a lot of stuff and some Soviet lenses in LTM and Contax mounts - and now Iโ€™m trying to take stock of it all and check it all over.

Itโ€™s a bit overwhelming.

In other news, if someone wants a nice Jupiter 12, I might have two fully tested and checked ones for sale soonโ€ฆ

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels Always wanted one, but never used rangefinders enough to justify one.
Btw, that's a clean-looking Mighty Mouse!

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels I've used more than a few Helios 44s and Zenits, soviet-era quality control certainly had room for improvement! ๐Ÿ˜
But somehow, Kiev-mount gear turned out to be of a better quality.

I remember not liking the Mighty Mouse and downright hated the Magic Mouse - holding it was an exercise in pain. ๐Ÿ˜‘

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels That's good to know, thanks!

But yeah, most of the soviet gear I've used was either from the late 70s, 80s, or early 90s. The later you go, the rougher it gets; I've yet to see a Zenit with a built-in light meter that actually works. ๐Ÿ˜…

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@thereisnocat @coldkennels Contax hold is probably the main reason I love my primary digital camera, Panasonic GX7, that much - while it can be used just like any other small digital camera with next to no grip, it is the perfect candidate for the Contax hold, it's front grip is shaped just the right way.
Expectedly, I really like Kiev rangefinders, as well. :)

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels @thereisnocat As an occasional user of a single Kiev 4M built in 1980, I've only encountered the awful rewind and somewhat uneven frame spacing. And rough film transport, but that's probably due to the poor camera not being used for a few decades.

On the other hand, designing a 3D printable take-up spool could be a good idea. ๐Ÿค”

Today I've tried to help a friend, a photographer with a lot of experience with digital cameras, load her first film into the camera. While playing the broken phone game over the Internet messaging.
That made me realize that basic step is not as easily understandable as I thought it is.
I think somebody should write a guide, easily understandable how-to cookbook for all those basic steps we all don't even think about.
That somebody should probably be me.๐Ÿค”

I have a question for you all, my lovely people. When I joined Mastodon I did so on a server where roleplaying friends were, by convenience. Do you think I'm doing myself a disservice in terms of exposure by not being on an "art" or "photography" server ? And if yes, where should I apply ?

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Sammael99 I think not, there's no real issue with someone being on a different, non-art/non-photography server. The only issue I can see is if your instance defederates one of the art/photo servers or the other way around. But that shouldn't happen often.

It is not a known fact that my experience began with shooting indie-rock gigs, back in the late '00s. I had a 6-megapixel entry-level DSLR, a fully manual lens and a lot of will. Sometimes, a friend would even lend me a lens!

Thanks to @esther for reminding me of my beginnings!

Here's one of those early photos, a Deerhoof having a blast, here in Zagreb, in 2010.

Well, finally finished that half a roll of 620 that was in my Kodak for almost 2 weeks. Turns out it was Bergger Pancro 400 & not JCH 400.

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Huginn87OG At least both are 400 ASA!
I did almost the same a few months ago, I developed two rolls of film in the same tank, only to realize those weren't the same films after developing - one was KosmoFoto Agent Shadow, and the other was Agfa APX 400! ๐Ÿ˜…

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Huginn87OG I just realized both those films have exactly the same development times, at least for Rodinal - you can't miss it! ๐Ÿ˜…

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@Huginn87OG Ahaha, oops, the lab will love you!๐Ÿ˜…
At least HC110 is not an exotic developer, shouldn't be that hard.๐Ÿค”

Hey friends,

has just announced a 30% price drop on Tri-X in 135. Donโ€™t expect to see it immediately.

This is in addition to the 6% drop on Tri-X I observed in the past six months.

Details: https://www.analog.cafe/comments/d3nw

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@analog_cafe Ahh, you've found the source of the announcement! I've spent more than half an hour with no success. ๐Ÿ˜ต

I have to update my post, thanks!

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@analog_cafe No wonder I've missed it. ๐Ÿ˜‘

But let's wait and see how it will translate to the real world, a roll of TriX for ~10โ‚ฌ would be great.

elkarrde, to BelieveInFilm
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

I've developed the last roll of Kodak Tri-X 320 film I had. I bought a 5-roll pack, a brick, in 220 format, sometime before the plagu..err, pandemic, and it took me a few years to go through all five rolls, but I finally did it.

I'm happy with the photos I got, but I no longer have any 220 film, and I really got to like it, especially in 6ร—7 cameras.

#believeinfilm #filmphotography #staybrokeshootfilm

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels I'll have to grab a few rolls of that stuff, thanks!

Shanghai GP3 is not a Kodak Tri-X 320, but hey, 220 film is 220 film, I won't complain! ๐Ÿ˜…

I've just checked my notes - I've shot four rolls of it in Bronica GS-1 and only one roll in Pentax 645, four rolls were developed in Xtol/XT-3 1+1, and the last roll in Rodinal 1+50. I haven't scanned anything except the first roll, though!

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@thereisnocat @coldkennels Color 220 film! That's cool!

Dang, both are out of the EU, taxes are pricey. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

Oh well, it is what it is, but first I have to thin my stash a bit more, there are expired films in there I bought new more than ten years ago! ๐Ÿ˜…

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@coldkennels @thereisnocat I plan to use everything! ๐Ÿ˜…

But somehow my plans are getting derailed and I continue shooting Agfa APX400 almost exclusively. ๐Ÿ˜‘

Trying to make it so my players can click a button and play a MIDI file, because I can do a MIDI playback in like 20kb vs like 4 megs for an MP3.

1999: yeah no problem dude

2024: well, no, but there's a JavaScript thing that you can install via whatever the hell NPM is, there's twenty megs of soundfonts to go with it,

elkarrde,
@elkarrde@ohai.social avatar

@ifixcoinops Back in the day, I had a 7-second optimized .mp3 (or was it a ฮผ-law .wav?) loop playing in the background. It was heavily optimized down to the waveform level to sound good and be as small to download as technically possible; if I remember correctly, it was well below 40kb. There was even a play/pause button, stuffed somewhere, I was so proud of my l33t coding skills.

I miss simpler websites of the yesteryears when everything just worked even on slow computers, and yeah, I'm old. ๐Ÿ˜

I love those two-shot film developers! You know, Rodinal, diluted Xtol, diluted FX-39 and the like - just like the usual one-shot developers, but I get to use them one additional time, with or without compensation. ๐Ÿ˜…

I had 400 ml of FX-39 used to develop a roll of Fomapan 200, and I just couldn't throw away a perfectly usable 40 ml of the developer! So I developed a roll of AgfaPhoto APX400 in it. ๐Ÿ˜
