I just have to share this with you.

@chozari, you especially.

Bendigo residents made a QUEER AND TRANS PRIDE DRAGON YO!!!

I am not a huge believer in the notion of a cultural melting pot but this is some delightful fusion and collaboration.

Ugh, I follow a lot of mental health professionals on LinkedIN, and my feed there has just shown me three posts in a row about mental health conditions that I have being associated with poorer life expectancy.

I already have high cholesterol and heart disease. Should I bite the bullet and begin taking a statin? Green tea? Red wine? (Don't say regular exercise.)

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@jonobie Oh gosh, I just checked and I follow 505 people! I don't think there's a public list of them I can share. I can recommend two people who consistently post interesting stuff with thoughtful comments, though:

Sarah Stokely — ADHD and neurodiversity

Joël Murray — trans and neurodiverse issues and experiences

what are the problems with systems thinking? – a book bringing together a big, old, LinkedIn thread https://stream.syscoi.com/2024/03/18/what-are-the-problems-with-systems-thinking-a-book-bringing-together-a-big-old-linkedin-thread/

@antlerboy This is not a book, it's a bloody corpus. And it certainly captures the pluralism and eclecticism of systems thinking, which can be strengths but also pose huge problems for anyone starting out in the field. I wrote about some of those challenges in this piece for New Directions for Evaluation:

Do I know anybody with access to stats on the international education market in Australia?

I have data on:

  • countries of origin

I need data on:

  • % in each sector (uni, VET, language, secondary) FOUND

  • % at each level (secondary, VET, undergrad, postgrad) FOUND

  • % who apply for PR vs leave Australia

HUH. 'Keen-Minshull and Jones are represented by Katherine Deves, a lawyer-turned Liberal candidate whose public comments on transgender issues split the party during the 2022 federal election campaign. Deves’ involvement in the cases, combined with the decision by a number of conservative, Liberal Party donors to cover Deeming’s legal costs, has morphed the defamation proceedings into an internal party culture war.'

Can anyone help me find the article I once found through Twitter which suggested that finding out how their organisation actually worked (through IIRC something as simple as process improvement) was like arcane knowledge which often derailed careers and led to people leaving their orgs?

@antlerboy makes me think of the anthropology on 'taboo' topics — enormously salient knowledge that is nonetheless quite dangerous to possess

I think the thing that is going to drive me off Mastodon is the one-eyed fedi superfans.

I've always known twitter can read my DMs but I also know they have a privacy policy backed up by strict privacy regulation in the US, EU and Australia.

The chap who runs my local instance is lovely but there's no privacy policy and no regulatory oversight. I don't even have a contract with him. I'd have to sue him in a private capacity if anything happened.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@allrite Privacy regulations were tested in the Cambridge Analytica case and Meta found itself on the hook for hundreds of millions in fines and direct settlement with users, so the incentive not to fuck up is considerable. And sure, someone could set up a privacy focused instance but that does nothing to solve the problem of privacy across the fediverse as a whole. The entire 'DM' function should be removed, it just misleads users.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@gr0k @allrite a 'blame the users' approach? in this economy?

The queer kink community I help to moderate had an account on Birdchan, which had historically been quite active but fell into disuse for obvious reasons.

Just got notified the account has been suspended for posting adult content.

That's right — under Elon, twitter is a safe space for neo-Nazis and terves, but YOU BETTER NOT POST NAKED BUTTS. 😅

'social determinants of health', however powerful, is ultimately just trying to do the wrong thing righter in the hope that's a move in the right direction (just like 'social prescribing')

like trying to put the right fuel in the wrong engine...

@antlerboy What prompted this reflection? Because I agree, strongly, and want to read more.

It is genuinely weird that dex and lisdex feel so different given lisdex has to be metabolised INTO dex before it has any active effect.

Lecturing people about Mastodon is like, the KEY ingredient of its atmosphere.

I have the weirdest tip for public speaking. On the day of the event, when you apply moisturiser, don't put any on your top lip, as it will cause beads of sweat to form there. Bodily sensations are key signals your brain picks up on to interpret your mood.* The sensation of sweat beading and cooling signals to your mind that you are anxious.

EDIT: WAIT IT DOES THAT! It's an opaquely named setting: 'PDF Expert opens with: All windows from last session.'
