If bills did two things really well it was avo toast and scrambled eggs.

Aussie 'smashed avo' isn't smooshed — it should be big chunks of avo. Bills does quarters: https://www.smh.com.au/goodfood/recipes/how-to-make-bill-granger-s-original-and-best-avocado-toast-20231227-p5ettt.html

Ok, we know that Portuguese sounds like Russian and there's a good linguistic explanation for that that I can't remember right now.

But I also want to know why Kazakh sounds so much like Icelandic.

Ok, pay this one.

'“I’m pleased Andrew Cohen (C8) had a pleasant experience at the grocery store, for mine was the complete opposite,” laments Kenneth Smith of Orange. “The fellow was cranky, rude, couldn’t scan the items properly, was slow and muttered foul language under his breath. I am never using self-checkout again."'

Sticker made by Scott Marsh. I'm buying two dozen of these and sticking them all in discreet places in my childhood parish church.

Much cooler today, which is great, because I need to put the oven on full and roast some tomatoes til they blacken and give up their juices.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

Then I will blend the roasted tomatoes and soaked chillies together with spices to make harissa.

Talking to my friend in Mumbai and I was complaining it was too hot and he was complaining it was too cold.

Then we established it's 30ºC in both places 😅

A rare moment of tenderness with Australia's most dangerous bird (really).

/because this is the internet, I want to make it abundantly clear that I adore magpies. Absolutely adore them. Rooted for bloody Collingwood as a kid I loved them so much. Imagine that.

@ct_bergstrom 'rooting' has a different meaning in Australia 😭🇦🇺

We're at 93.8% fully vaccinated and some people want to make a crisis out of vaccine hesitancy.

https://www.theage.com.au/national/lingering-mistrust-as-child-vaccination-rates-fall-for-second-year-20231204-p5eouf.html?btis= [$]

The reason we use the word 'hesitant' is because there is fucking good evidence that treating people as anti-vaxxers actually hardens their beliefs, confirms their prejudices and diminishes subsequent vax rates.

If you keep lines of communication open and don't use shaming and stigma, subsequent vax rates improve.

Fun piece. I don't know about cities beginning to look the same though, if that happens you're in the wrong part of the city IMO. Get away from the shopping malls!

From overcrowded cities to overhead bins: These are the 10 annoyances only modern-day travellers would understand https://www.smh.com.au/traveller/reviews-and-advice/the-10-most-annoying-things-about-modern-day-travel-20231212-p5eqts.html

Seriously, the whinging about marks from a cohort who don’t do their frickin work and carry all the red flags of a group who have achieved cohesion but for all the worst reasons. They would recognise those flags, but OH WAIT they don’t take responsibility for their learning and blame everyone but themselves for poor results.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@chozari You are going to LOVE PhD study so much. No group work, everyone's in their own lane, fighting their own demons.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@chozari First years have always been dickheads but there are substantial warning signs that even postgrads who went through Covid are being more aggressive, demanding and entitled than past cohorts.

engagedpractx,
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

@jonobie @chozari I'm not sure. It could be an expression of personal and/or collective trauma, but I'm not aware of anyone studying this issue or any findings on it. It's just really incredibly striking as a post-Covid development in the experience of teachers across very different fields.

@engagedpractx apparently projects like Free Pascal can be used to write server based web apps but I have no experience with it and practitioners would be very niche I think (not sure if your original question stands)

I went shopping and bought a ton of spices to make harissa paste for my friends' XNY pressies.

Plus spanakopita and galaktoboureko from Athena Cakes. I think they might be under new ownership because I have a faint memory they used to close on Mondays.

I also bought 4 tall cans of Four Pillars' Fresh Yuzu Gin & Soda and I'm sorry but it just tastes like shower cleaning fluid 😩

Slackers of Facebook, we need to talk. It's 'a belated happy birthday,' not 'happy belated birthday,' unless their special day arrived late by some temporal anomaly.

I grew up with, in hindsight, an insanely restricted diet, but I didn't realise at the time that this sucked as it was just normality for me. A 'treat' was cordial and 2 (two) gingernut biscuits. My parents were not pro-nutrition so much as militantly anti-pleasure. As an adult this has meant certain difficulties (binge eating for one) but occasionally I discover something I've just never tried (tonight: onion rings) and it brings me pure joy every time. 💜

engagedpractx, to random
@engagedpractx@sciences.social avatar

Good grief. I believe in informed consent which is why I'm upfront about some vaccinations having unpleasant but temporary post-vax reactions. That doesn't make me a bloody anti-vaxxer and I don't appreciate toots implying I don't understand the value of vaccination. Only been working in public health for 20 years... big frown, end of toot
