In my dream last night, I had to debug a failure in our mastering system, where it flagged a problem that Congressman Jim Jordan had too much avian DNA. This was because an essential component of mastering was examining the DNA of a carton of eggs to make sure they had enough human DNA for mastering to complete. The bug was somewhere in the OCR stack that was wrongly concluding that the the object was a carton of human eggs.

I mean, it sounds weird but how else would you do it?

I mean, the good news is that this is a pretty big blow to the faithless electors strategy. The bad news is that Trump is still on the ballot. The badder news is that this is a big blow to the popular vote compact.

Waxing nostalgic with old SF friends, talking about how Puerto Alegre's house margarita is so much better than it has any right to be. I was curious and dug up a 20+ year-old note where I wrote down their secret, after spying on the bartender. Not sure if it's 100% accurate, but it's simple:

    Puerto Alegre Margarita

Equal parts Rose's Lime and Tequila
Equal parts Mr. & Mrs. T's Marg Mix & Triple Sec

    Police and Crime in SF
There has been all kinds of news about how the "defund the police" movement and "don't stop shoplifters" laws is killing downtown San Francisco. Here is a more clear take, illuminated by cold, hard numbers.

San Francisco police stopped doing their jobs in 2020 and haven't started again. Here is a chart of traffic citations issued:

@gadlen @willowbl00 SFPD traffic stops are down very specifically because the SF police commission (the oversight board for the department) voted to stop doing stops for low-level infractions that had a history of racial bias. There is plenty of evidence to think that SFPD downed tools because they didn't like the district attorney, but traffic stops aren't one of them.

I'd be more inclined to believe that these people actually gave a shit about unborn fetuses if they used their time and energy to advocate for policies that would make bringing those pregnancies to term not so oppressively impractical. Stuff like universal paid parental leave, a salary for stay-at-home parents, universal pre-K, and tax deductions for daycare. Instead they pump up politicians who are opposed to all those things.

    • Unsupervised rookie officers
    • Distracted driving
    • Single-vehicle crash damaging private property
    • Demand the victimized property owners produce identification
    • Escalate to homophobic slurs
    • Handcuff and arrest the property owner on bogus charges
    • Lie about the cause of the distraction
    • Change their story when surveillance video disproves it
    • DA knocks down the charges (and will probably drop them)
    • Officers not given sobriety tests

@Cdespinosa I remember visiting St. Louis several years ago, and the first thing I noticed about their cop cars was that they had no license plates or unique markers. This is not a department big on public accountability.

@daringfireball The way I wound up using of Mastodon kinda reminds me of Path. It's a small group of people I have some preexisting association with (for me mostly through Apple). I sort of like that it hasn't blown up, and it still feels a bit like the early Internet. There's some romance here that's probably unique to older millennial nerds.

@unsaturated @cfi We did mach_right.h for the systems use cases. Not sure how much traction it gained, but it formalized the basic patterns with a decent level of type safety. Maybe some maschist will rewrite launchd in Swift someday though.

And does it even bear mentioning that most Americans have absolutely no idea what inflation is, how it's measured, or what their percentage expectation actually means? Christ, most people think lower inflation means "prices go down".
