discourse on the birdsite because someone opened up Balatro and found a 4000 line if/else stack. Oh nyo.

Look... real code looks like shit. I've never seen pretty code in an app that shipped, especially not game code.

I think often gamedevs can get too obsessed with optimizing what amounts to aesthetics, in that such optimizations rarely benefit the performance of the actual game.

If 4000 lines of if statements are what it takes to get to the finish line, then fine.

@krapp Speaking of, a while back I watched some Yandere Sim code/performance discussion videos. Of them only one actually bothered to profile the game. It's amazing just how bad some people are at reviewing code

Most: there's too many ifs and using distance checks, that's bad and slow

Competent review: it's rendering the entire game world multiple times per frame due to misconfigured camera(s) among other issues

Had an idea for intro/BRB screens, can you have a source that pairs text + an image file, or image file or something?

I was thinking of a fan art showcase for my BRB screen but IDK how I'd add sourcing without like burning it into the images

@SirTapTap I've grouped sources together in folders to show/hide them all at once. I do that for my facecam box. I can hide the folder to remove the box or show/hide the cam source to show a stub feed.

I don't know if there's a source that gives an image and text at the same time though.

I need an easier way to learn AnimationPlayer and AnimationTree in 😭

Why there's an animation called ↩️ RESET in the middle of the other animations I made 👀

Why the AnimationTree does like mixing all the animations together and when I click on "Deterministic" on the Animation Player it doesn't do that anymore, what does "Deterministic" mean? 🤨

For the record I know sooner or later I'll understand it. It still kind of goes over my head how all that works 🤔

@matias_hettich From my understanding: "RESET" is meant to contain a default pose. When you first create a keyframe it will give you an option to add it to RESET as well.

Or you could manually set up RESET before starting to create other animations.

@arstechnica not sure why Google would cite "AI" of all things when cuts are to real estate and finance. Smells like they're lying.

Real estate and finance needs for a business do not change if that company is still engaged in the same fundamental work. In Google's case it's still doing software R&D.

Divesting real estate assets reducing work needed (e.g. due to Work from Home or previous layoffs) would make more sense here.

Extra annoying "feature" of so many shipping scams being out there.

I just received a legitimate tracking number for a package and the message immediately went to my spam folder. Glad I was keeping an eye out for it

I spent a bit of time doing some white boxing on Robot Shooter. The game currently has the player hopping a fence to escape an alley, another to get to a park before racing up to the roof of a parking garage.

The new path I'm working on is to have the player climb up and into an office tower then fight through some indoor combat to a stairway or elevator down to the streets. From there though 🤷‍♀️

Weird question, but I need a very effective jumpscare sound. Like, one that will just terrify anyone if it shows up of nowhere.

(and yes, the person about to experience the thing will know it's a thing ahead of the thing, so they can chose to not experience the thing, so it's morally OK!)

How do I find such a sound? I've had bad luck on Freesound so far. License needs to be very permissive but I'm ok with crediting the maker ofc.

@Nifflas the sound that plays from my phone whenever there's an emergency broadcast is a pretty reliable jumpscare. Especially at 3am

Edit: it's a really unpleasant, jarring synth tone. Experimenting with synths can produce some truly awful sounds with a little effort
