his role in JJ made me realize what a damn good actor he is. I love his evil roles! he played petulant psychopath so well.

for real. had a friend with a big relatively-new truck with a stubby bed try to have me help him move. I show up with my 2003 ford ranger, made before trucks primarily became male fashion accessories. he’d teased me about it before because it’s apparently a “small truck”. yet somehow barely anything fit in his toy truck and my “small” truck handled his couches and mattresses fine. teased him about his truck in return, used the ol “not the size it’s how you use it” line, and have never heard him talk shit about my little truck again.

“Menu prices will rise!”

nothing a bunch of two-bit con artists MBAs hate more than an informed mark customer.

The actual good businesses run by good people will not suffer by this. only those that relied on duping their customers.

as a gay, I take some undeserved pride in being so terrifying to straight conservatives that many of them started walking around with poop on their butt because they’re scared if they touch their b-hole they’re suddenly gonna “break” and go gay

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

You are repeating a story designed for the rubes.

Trying to shame conservatives like this doesn’t work. They’re actively proud of being gullible, stupid, victims to their celebrities. It’s their entire identity. They see this and think “hell yeah, you don’t want me repeating the story?? I better do it harder anyway!” - it doesn’t matter that you are actually saying “btw this makes you look very dumb and gullible”, all they heard was “i don’t like this”, and since you’re The Enemy™, they love what you don’t and hate what you do, and they double down on whatever it was, to Win Harder™.

This is why they’ll often seem to take self-defeating or self-contradictory positions, and if you point that out, they take it as winning against you twice (instead of proving themselves wrong) and go straight to calling you a loser and patting themselves on the back.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

You’re utterly incapable of even considering people who disagree with you as fully human

I’ve said and believe nothing of the sort. you’re confusing my ideology with the fascist dehumanizing ideology your party espouses to justify inhuman practices against foreigners and domestic minorities.

surprised when [we] loathe and hate you

this doesn’t surprise me at all. your entire political ideology would collapse if you didn’t unconditionally loathe someone. you’re putting the cart before the horse.

certainty that everyone but you is stupid

well, if someone does things that are really stupid over and over, is told that they’re stupid and provided evidence accordingly, but continues to do so anyway… quacks like a duck, looks like a duck, probably is. it’s hard to see it otherwise. I actively try to remember there’s a real person with a rich internal life on the other end, despite what you think otherwise, and despite the lack of reciprocal consideration from Republicans.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

So you didn’t say “They’re actively proud of being gullible, stupid, victims to their celebrities?”

i did indeed say that. what I didn’t say - and what I was clearly referring to with that quote you’ve pulled about me not saying a thing - is that I don’t view them as human, as you insinuated I said. if that’s your interpretation, you are incorrect. perhaps you’ve gotten confused by which part of my response correlates to which part of your messages. or perhaps you’re intentionally misconstruing it to make it appear as though you’re “dunking on me”, as usual for arguments with conservatives.

I doubt you could even begin to explicate the conservative ideology in broad strokes

i doubt it too, because there is a constant fundamental disconnect between what conservatism purports to be and what it actually practices. I doubt it’s possible for you to explicate it either in a way that isn’t immediately contradicted with the actions taken by your leaders and community, too. the closest thing to a stable ideology conservatism has had in the past 20 years is “liberals are the enemy: do the opposite of whatever they say, even if we were telling you to do it 10 minutes ago”.

No you don’t. Stop bullshitting yourself.

perhaps I should have emphasized “try”. it gets harder with every interaction with yet another deranged conservative lunatic who wants to make me illegal or dead because my mere quiet existence is somehow a threat to their misplaced feelings of superiority. I’m only human.

i’m sleepy so let’s wrap it up like you all like to do: This has been fun, thanks for taking the L.

‘My whole library is wiped out’: what it means to own movies and TV in the age of streaming services (www.theguardian.com)

*What rights do you have to the digital movies, TV shows and music you buy online? That question was on the minds of Telstra TV Box Office customers this month after the company announced it would shut down the service in June. Customers were told that unless they moved over to another service, Fetch, they would no longer be...

same. I buy a lot of software/games and media/music/movies, and before I buy I always make sure I can pirate it down the road if I need to. if I can’t, I reconsider how much I need it. I’ll switch to my pirated copy at the drop of a hat without a drop of guilt. if it has annoying or unperformant drm? it makes me sign up for an account to use my paid software on my own computer? its servers go down and it won’t boot? switched.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

I always thought it should be “unlock”, because that’s more what is happening. you’re not buying it, renting has a connotation of a fixed term ownership time, but unlock describes the action… they’ve had the movie the whole time sitting there, probably in a CDN near your home already, but you’re not allowed to see it until you pony up. it’s locked away.

I’m really liking the idea of the day-to-da experience for a working mage in the magical standards agency responsible for keeping all these things in order. An even more arcane IEEE, if that’s possible.

Spells extracting energy from another magical system MUST send a request for draw before beginning extraction. High-capacitance spells SHOULD respond to all requests with positive authorization if sufficient capacity exists, but MUST reply in some way.

This series seems to check more boxes than I thought I had…

i’m adding it to the top of the list. Except i don’t have a list, so I’m creating a list and adding it to that and therefore it automatically finds itself at the top of it.

wow. does the factory that made it have absolutely no quality control processes in place? I would be embarrassed to own a vehicle that did that, and more than a little worried about its safety.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

imo, it’s a semantic attack, and it’s been very effective. art, drawings, paintings, animations, movies, shows, music, poetry, books, code, games, any free human creative venture: it is all suddenly (and falsely) insinuated to only be possible when placed inside a “platform”. you and I may know this isn’t true, but most people could not defend against this hostile idea or simply could not identify it as such, and now falsely believe human expression is only “real” when it’s inside a company’s ad-filled self-reinforcing skinner box.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

probably. this doesn’t surprise me one bit.

If you have a smart TV, it probably runs an ARM-architecture Linux or Android (which amounts to a bunch of extra stuff piled onto Linux) to drive the logic and ui to support connecting to the internet and downloading and updating streaming apps and other smart TV crap.

most of the time they’ll run some minimal stripped-down version of these operating systems to support only features needed for the TV and it’s functions. buildroot is an open source project that specializes in producing hyper slim Linux OS installation images for devices like these.

if I had to guess, they had a USB full of shows plugged in and the smart tv’s solution was to just boot up the linux version of VLC in a bare x session when the user hits play on “totally_not_pirated_smallville_s01e03.mkv” on their thumbdrive. not a terrible solution, honestly: VLC just plays anything.

The old kernel is because a lot of low level hardware has available drivers written for it that are intended to be loaded into old versions of the Linux kernel (at time of release perhaps) and are then just never updated lol, at least not for ARM. sometimes there are breaking changes with kernel apis and stuff as the kernel version increases over time, so the easier solution for someone trying to make a TV, over begging and/or paying the hardware developers to update their drivers, is to just run an old kernel version.

everything is a hack. nearly all these smart devices are just general-purpose computers with ancient (predictable, cheap) software and inescapable interfaces taped over the front, and a whole lot of digital duct tape on the back.

this is my plan when it stops working, and I think everyone should do the same once they brick them. throw it into a box, hand write a note that says “stopped working. repair/return or refund please. account ” and mail it to the office in your country. New York, for me. when they won’t do either, start making noise about Spotify stealing your device and demand its return or sufficient compensation by any channel available.

interesting, only the most basic info is included about my 19 year old account. I’ve always been very conservative with the info I share online though.

back in the day, everyone was regularly reminded that the internet is a wild west and only by safeguarding your personal information and using pseudonyms and avoiding identifying info can you have a chance to be safe and have a good time. but now that PII is profitable, all the big internet companies tell you the opposite so they can make a buck. I think this is the inevitable outcome of it.

sorry to hear a baddie is clinging to you, that’s always quite troublesome. it can be hard to do anything about it. shitty as it is, your best bet is usually to become an undesirable target: boring. they’re school yard bullies. they do it for the reaction, that’s it. the more you react, the harder they try. fucking assholes.

idk, helldivers going from insanely popular to universally reviled is gonna hurt future deals with Sony. why would any indie or medium sized dev risk doing business with Sony when Sony will randomly push the “destroy game and profitability and reputation” button? this will decrease the number of people willing to publish titles through Sony. “oh you went with Sony? you must want to kill your game lmao”

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

I’m not even talking about those people or those scenarios.

you call them the extreme scenario, but they are the norm. this kind of scenario is the average reality for a massive number of Americans. it might not be “single parent with a flat tire”, but there are thousands of ways people get stuck in a rut with only credit as a lifeline, and it’s getting more and more common, and it’s rarely something that could be foreseen or mitigated against. that’s how our society is constructed now. desperation is the norm. it’s profitable.

that is what this trend reveals. the ones who buy more than they need on credit they barely qualify for are the minority. the desperate are the majority.

you’d think you’d take some personal responsibility over your ignorance on the matter before loudly asserting that desperate people need to just pull up on their bootstraps harder and stop whining near you.

all of it, then more. it’s literally illegal for them to not try. shareholder primacy is a cancer on our civilization.

experbia,
@experbia@lemmy.world avatar

for every 9 who leave, 1 will make them at least 10x the money by watching and clicking ads. but yet they’ll have to pay fewer server and bandwidth and hosting costs. more profit. line goes up. shareholders appeased, as legally mandated.

welcome to the whale economy. 9 consumers may be alienated for the value of the 1 with poor impulse control who remains. it is happening to all goods and services, slowly.

If they know someone will buy it anyway for some reason (more money than sense, poor impulse control, etc.) why should McDonald’s sell 10 burgers at 1 dollar each when it could sell 1 burger at 10 dollars? same revenue, 10% of the labor and material costs.
